'Righteous' in the Bible

These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.

Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time.

Abraham came near and said, “Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it?

Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?”

So the Lord said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account.”

Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the whole city because of five?” And He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

Judah recognized them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again.

Then Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “I have sinned this time; the Lord is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones.

Keep far from a false charge, and do not kill the innocent or the righteous, for I will not acquit the guilty.

Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today?

“You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your towns which the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

You shall not distort justice; you shall not be partial, and you shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous.

“If there is a dispute between men and they go to court, and the judges decide their case, and they justify the righteous and condemn the wicked,

“The Rock! His work is perfect,For all His ways are just;A God of faithfulness and without injustice,Righteous and upright is He.

“They will call peoples to the mountain;There they will offer righteous sacrifices;For they will draw out the abundance of the seas,And the hidden treasures of the sand.”

“At the sound of those who divide flocks among the watering places,There they shall recount the righteous deeds of the Lord,The righteous deeds for His peasantry in Israel.Then the people of the Lord went down to the gates.

So now, take your stand, that I may plead with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous acts of the Lord which He did for you and your fathers.

He said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for you have dealt well with me, while I have dealt wickedly with you.

How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood from your hand and destroy you from the earth?”

The Lord will return his blood on his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he and killed them with the sword, while my father David did not know it: Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.

O Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we have been left an escaped remnant, as it is this day; behold, we are before You in our guilt, for no one can stand before You because of this.”

“You found his heart faithful before You,And made a covenant with himTo give him the land of the Canaanite,Of the Hittite and the Amorite,Of the Perizzite, the Jebusite and the Girgashite—To give it to his descendants.And You have fulfilled Your promise,For You are righteous.

If you are pure and upright,Surely now He would rouse Himself for youAnd restore your righteous estate.

“Though I am righteous, my mouth will condemn me;Though I am guiltless, He will declare me guilty.

‘If I am wicked, woe to me!And if I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head.I am sated with disgrace and conscious of my misery.

“What is man, that he should be pure,Or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

“Nevertheless the righteous will hold to his way,And he who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger.

“Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous,Or profit if you make your ways perfect?

“The righteous see and are glad,And the innocent mock them,

Then these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

“For Job has said, ‘I am righteous,But God has taken away my right;

“Shall one who hates justice rule?And will you condemn the righteous mighty One,

“If you are righteous, what do you give to Him,Or what does He receive from your hand?

“He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous;But with kings on the throneHe has seated them forever, and they are exalted.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,But the way of the wicked will perish.

For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord,You surround him with favor as with a shield.

O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous;For the righteous God tries the hearts and minds.

God is a righteous judge,And a God who has indignation every day.

If the foundations are destroyed,What can the righteous do?”

The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,And the one who loves violence His soul hates.

For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness;The upright will behold His face.

There they are in great dread,For God is with the righteous generation.

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.

Let the lying lips be mute,Which speak arrogantly against the righteousWith pride and contempt.

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones;And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.

Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;Praise is becoming to the upright.

The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteousAnd His ears are open to their cry.

The righteous cry, and the Lord hearsAnd delivers them out of all their troubles.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,But the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Evil shall slay the wicked,And those who hate the righteous will be condemned.

The wicked plots against the righteousAnd gnashes at him with his teeth.

Better is the little of the righteousThan the abundance of many wicked.

For the arms of the wicked will be broken,But the Lord sustains the righteous.

The wicked borrows and does not pay back,But the righteous is gracious and gives.

I have been young and now I am old,Yet I have not seen the righteous forsakenOr his descendants begging bread.

The righteous will inherit the landAnd dwell in it forever.

The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,And his tongue speaks justice.

The wicked spies upon the righteousAnd seeks to kill him.

But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;He is their strength in time of trouble.

Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices,In burnt offering and whole burnt offering;Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

The righteous will see and fear,And will laugh at him, saying,

Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you;He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.

The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance;He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

And men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous;Surely there is a God who judges on earth!”

The righteous man will be glad in the Lord and will take refuge in Him;And all the upright in heart will glory.

But let the righteous be glad; let them exult before God;Yes, let them rejoice with gladness.

May they be blotted out of the book of lifeAnd may they not be recorded with the righteous.

In his days may the righteous flourish,And abundance of peace till the moon is no more.

And all the horns of the wicked He will cut off,But the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.

The righteous man will flourish like the palm tree,He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

For judgment will again be righteous,And all the upright in heart will follow it.

They band themselves together against the life of the righteousAnd condemn the innocent to death.

Light is sown like seed for the righteousAnd gladness for the upright in heart.

Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones,And give thanks to His holy name.

The Lord performs righteous deedsAnd judgments for all who are oppressed.

Light arises in the darkness for the upright;He is gracious and compassionate and righteous.

For he will never be shaken;The righteous will be remembered forever.

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;Yes, our God is compassionate.

The sound of joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous;The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.

This is the gate of the Lord;The righteous will enter through it.

I shall give thanks to You with uprightness of heart,When I learn Your righteous judgments.

At midnight I shall rise to give thanks to YouBecause of Your righteous ordinances.

I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are righteous,And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.

I have sworn and I will confirm it,That I will keep Your righteous ordinances.

My eyes fail with longing for Your salvationAnd for Your righteous word.

Tsadhe.Righteous are You, O Lord,And upright are Your judgments.

Your testimonies are righteous forever;Give me understanding that I may live.

The sum of Your word is truth,And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

Seven times a day I praise You,Because of Your righteous ordinances.

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the land of the righteous,So that the righteous will not put forth their hands to do wrong.

The Lord is righteous;He has cut in two the cords of the wicked.

Surely the righteous will give thanks to Your name;The upright will dwell in Your presence.

Let the righteous smite me in kindness and reprove me;It is oil upon the head;Do not let my head refuse it,For still my prayer is against their wicked deeds.

“Bring my soul out of prison,So that I may give thanks to Your name;The righteous will surround me,For You will deal bountifully with me.”

And do not enter into judgment with Your servant,For in Your sight no man living is righteous.
