The Israelites, however, were fruitful, increased greatly, multiplied, and became extremely strong, so that the land was filled with them.

The Hebrew midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.

Now it happened after a long time [about forty years] that the king of Egypt died. And the children of Israel (Jacob) groaned and sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out. And their cry for help because of their bondage ascended to God.

If, however, it is known that the ox was in the habit of goring, yet its owner has not restrained it, he must compensate fully, ox for ox; the dead animal will become his.

Moses alone, however, shall come near to the Lord, but they shall not come near, nor shall the people come up with him.”
