She said: Do not call me Naomi (meaning pleasant). Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life bitter.

The Almighty's arrows are in me. My spirit drinks in their poison. God's terrors set themselves against me.

I was at ease, but he shattered me. He has grabbed me by the neck and has shaken me to pieces. He has also set me up as his target.

You have trapped us in a net. You have laid burdens on our backs.

Your anger consumes us. We are troubled by your rage.

For I have eaten ashes like bread and mingled my drink with weeping. This is because of your indignation and your anger. You have lifted me up and cast me away.

Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you the desire of your eyes with a blow. You will, however, not mourn and you will not weep, and your tears will not come.

Though they bring up their children, yet I will bereave them until no man is left. Yes, woe to them even when I depart from them!

After the dew had gone, the desert was covered with thin flakes that looked like frost.

The house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander seed, white in color. It tasted like wafers made with honey.

Manna was small like coriander seeds and looked like resin. The people would gather it and then grind it in a hand mill or crush it in a mortar. They would cook it in a pot or make round loaves of bread out of it. It tasted like rich sweet pastry made with oil. When dew fell on the camp at night, manna fell with it.

They received bread from heaven when they were in need, and you made water come out of the rock for their drink, and gave them orders to go in and take for their heritage the land that your hand give them.

Yet he commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven. He rained down manna upon them to eat and gave them food from heaven.

Moses and Aaron assembled the congregation in front of the rock and said to them: Listen, you rebels, must we bring water out of this rock for you? Moses raised his hand and hit the rock twice with the staff. Water came pouring out! All the people and their animals drank.

The entire congregation of Israelites left the desert of Sin and traveled from place to place as Jehovah commanded them. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. So they complained to Moses about this: Give us water to drink! Moses said: Why do you complain to me? Why do you test Jehovah? The people were thirsty for water. They complained to Moses and asked: Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Was it to make us, our children, and our livestock die of thirst? read more.
Moses cried out to Jehovah: What should I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me! Jehovah said to Moses: Go in front of the people. Take the elders of Israel with you. Take your rod with which you struck the river, in your hand, and go. Behold! I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock and water will come out of it. Then the people may drink. Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the complaining of the children of Israel, and because they tested Jehovah, saying: Is Jehovah among us or not?

He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths. He brought forth streams also from the rock and caused waters to run down like rivers. Yet they still continued to sin against him. They rebelled against the Most High in the desert. read more.
In their heart they put God to the test by asking food according to their desire. Then they spoke against God. They said: Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, and streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide meat for His people?

He opened a rock, and water flowed like a river through the dry places.

The Israelites asked, and he brought them quail and filled them with bread from heaven.

Jehovah sent a wind from the sea that brought quails and dropped them all around the camp. There were quails on the ground about three feet deep as far as you could walk in a day in any direction. All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered the quails. No one gathered less than sixty bushels. Then they spread the quails out all around the camp. While the meat was still in their mouths, before they had even had a chance to chew it, Jehovah became angry with the people and struck them with a severe plague.

Yet he commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven. He rained down manna upon them to eat and gave them food from heaven. Man did eat the bread of angels. He sent them food in abundance. read more.
He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens and by his power he directed the south wind. He rained meat upon them like the dust, even winged fowl like the sand of the seas, Then he let them fall in the midst of their camp, round about their dwellings. So they ate and were well filled, and their desire he gave to them. Before they had satisfied their desire, while their food was in their mouths,

The people brought him gifts, so that he became wealthy and highly honored.

Jehoshaphat's kingdom was peaceful, since his God surrounded him with peace.

Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. Jehovah blessed him. He became rich, and continued to grow richer until he became very wealthy. He possessed flocks and herds and a great household. The Philistines envied him. read more.
The Philistines stopped up all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father. They filled them with dirt. Abimelech said to Isaac: Go away from us. You are too powerful for us. Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar where he settled. Then Isaac dug the water wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham. The Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He gave them the same names his father had given them. Isaac's servants dug in the valley (wadi) (torrent-valley) and found a well of running water. The herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac. They said: The water is ours! So he named the well Esek, because they argued with him. They dug another well. And they quarreled over that one too. So Isaac named it Sitnah (Accusation). He moved on from there and dug another well. They did not quarrel over this one. So he named it Rehoboth (Roomy). He said: Now Jehovah has made room for us. We will prosper in this land. He went from there to Beer-sheba. That night Jehovah appeared to Isaac. Jehovah said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, because I am with you. Elijah said to her: Have no fear. Go and do as you said, but first make me a little cake of it and come and give it to me. Then make something for yourself and your son. For this is the word of Jehovah, the God of Israel: 'Your supply of meal will not come to an end. The bottle will never be without oil, till the day when Jehovah sends rain on the earth.' read more.

that turn man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride. It is to preserve him from the pit and keep his life from perishing by the sword. On the other hand a man may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in his bones. His very being finds food repulsive and he loathes the choicest meal. His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his bones, once hidden, now stick out. He draws near to the pit and to the messengers of death. Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, to be gracious to him and say: 'Spare him from going down to the pit. I have found a ransom for him!' His flesh is renewed like a child's. It is restored as in the days of his youth. He prays to God and finds favor with him. He sees God's face and shouts for joy! God restores him to his righteous state. He comes to men and says: 'I sinned, and perverted what was right, but I did not get what I deserved.' He redeemed me from going down to the pit, and I will live to enjoy the light. God does all these things to a man twice, even three times. He turns him back from the pit that the light of life may shine on him.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away. For if I do not go away the helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send it to you.
