Your rulers are rebels, friends with thieves. They all love bribes and run after gifts. They never defend orphans. They do not listen to the widows' pleas.


Evil schemes are in their hands. Their right hands are full of bribes.

A wicked man takes a bribe to pervert the ways of judgment.

You let the guilty go free for a bribe and you keep the innocent from getting justice.

He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil.







Good for nothing, cries the buyer. But when he goes his way he boasts about the purchase.




Woe to him who builds his house without righteousness and his upper rooms without justice. Woe to him who uses his neighbor's services without pay and does not give him his wages.

No one stops to think. No one has enough knowledge or understanding to say: I burned half of the wood in the fire. I also baked bread over its coals. I roasted meat and ate it. Now I am making the rest of the wood into a disgusting thing and bowing to a block of wood.

Son of man, you are living among rebellious people. They have eyes, but they cannot see. They have ears, but they cannot hear because they are rebellious people.

A stupid (senseless) person cannot know and a fool cannot understand.

You hypocrites, you know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven but how is it that you do not know how to interpret this time?



We have many things to say about him and it is hard to explain it to you, for you are dull of hearing (slow to learn).





So he made us feel the force of his anger and suffer the violence of war. Like fire his anger burned throughout Israel. Yet we never knew what was happening. We learned nothing at all from it.


Do not harden your hearts, as in the day of strife, as in the day of testing in the wilderness.



Whoever hates his brother is a murderer! You know that no murderer has everlasting life remaining in him.




Never hate your brother in your heart. Be sure to correct your neighbor so that you will not be guilty of sinning along with him.


As you advance, force out all the people who live there. Get rid of all their stone and metal idols, and destroy all their places of worship.

The words that he spoke at Jehovah's command against the altar in Bethel and against all the places of worship in the towns of Samaria will surely come true.

They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire. I did not command this. I would never think of such a thing. (It would not come from my heart.)

He got rid of the altars of foreign gods. He broke down the sacred stones. He cut down the poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah.

I will destroy your worship sites. I will cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies on top of your dead idols. I will view you with disgust.



Never pervert justice. Always be impartial. Never take a bribe, because bribes blind wise people and deny justice to those who are in the right.

How long are you going to judge unjustly? How long are you going to show partiality to the wicked?

An unjust man is an abomination (disgusting) to the righteous. He who is upright in the way is an abomination (detestable) to the wicked.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel; it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes to desire strong drink. They will drink and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

I saw under the sun the place of judgment and wickedness was there. And wickedness was in the place of righteousness.





Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.




What protest may a living man make? Can a man protest about the punishment for his sin?

People who stray will learn to understand. Those who always grumble will be glad to be taught.

Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the congregation of God, and shame them that have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I will not praise you!

Those who eat it will be punished because they have dishonored what is holy to Jehovah. They must be excluded from the people.

When you contribute the best part, you will not suffer the consequences of any sin. You will not be dishonoring the holy offerings given by the Israelites, and you will not die.'

You who say man should not commit adultery do you commit adultery? You who abhors idols do you rob temples?
