And they rose up that very hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
And they said to them, The Lord has truly come back to life again, and Simon has seen him.
And they rehearsed the things that happened in the way, and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread.
And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit.
And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat?
And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish.
Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures;
You apostles are [to be] witnesses of these things [i.e., they were to give their testimony of these truths. See Acts 1:8].
And he led them out until they were over against Bethany: and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
and they worship'd him, and with great joy return'd to Jerusalem,
where they daily praised and blessed God in the temple.
He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to be the sons of God: in that they believed on his name:
a birth which they had not from circumcision, nor from the constitution of the body, nor the institution of man, but from God.
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, "Who are you?"
art thou then Elias? said they; and he answer'd, I am not. art thou a prophet? and he answer'd, no.
said they to him, who then art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us: what sayst thou of thy self?
Now the messengers were of the sect of the Pharisees, and they asked him,
And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet?
And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell?
come, said he, and see. so they went and saw where he lodged, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two disciples, who had followed Jesus, after they had heard what John had said.
now when the wine was out, the mother of Jesus said to him, they have no wine.
these Jesus order'd the waiters to fill with water. so they filled them up to the brim.
now fill out, said he, and carry it to the steward of the feast, which accordingly they did.
And, when the master of the feast had tasted the water, now made, wine, and knew not whence it was, - though, they who were ministering, knew, even they who had drawn out the water, the master accosteth the bridegroom,
and said to him, "{Everyone} serves the good wine first, and whenever they are drunk, the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!"
After this he went down to Capernaum, in company with his mother, his brethren, and his disciples: but they stay'd there only a few days.
and when he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembred that expression of his: and they believed the scripture, and what Jesus had said.
Now whilst he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the passover, many believed in him when they saw the miracles which he did.
Jesus said to him, "Truly, truly, I tell you, a person cannot see the kingdom of God [i.e., enter it. See verse 5], unless he is born from above [Note: The words "from above" are also used in verse 31, but in this place they could also mean "again," or "anew" and refer to the source of a person's second birth].
Jesus replied,
For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that no one who believes in him should be lost, but that they should all have eternal life.
And this is the test by which men are judged--the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness more than they loved the Light, because their deeds were wicked.
For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light that his works may not be shewn as they are;
but he that doth right, cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, because they are agreeable to the will of God.
After this Jesus and His disciples went to the country-[side] of Judea and there they remained and immersed people.
And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
Then some of John's disciples got into a controversy with a Jew in regard to purification; so they came to John and said to him.
And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
They who did accept his statement attested the fact that God is true.
(For his disciples had gone away into the town so that they could buy food.)
Jesus answered her, they that drink of this water, will be thirsty again:
Our forefathers worshiped on this mountain [i.e., Mt. Gerizim, which was visible from where they were sitting]; but you say that Jerusalem is the place where people should worship [God]."
but the time is coming, nay, is very nigh, when the true worshippers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth: for they are the worshippers which he requires.
God is a spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.
And upon this came his disciples; and they marvelled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?
so they went out of the city, and came to him.
Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus. "Rabbi," they said, "eat something."
"Rabbi," they said, "eat something." But he answered, "I have food to eat of which you know nothing."
So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one brought him [anything] to eat, [did they]?"
is it not a common saying, "t'other four months, and then comes harvest?" lift up your eyes now, I say, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
But many of the Samaritans from that city believed on Him through the word of the woman, testifying that, He told me all things which I did. Then when the Samaritans came to Him they asked Him to abide with them:
so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days.
Then many more believed because of what he said, himself; and they told the woman.
and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
when he was come into Galilee, he was well received by the Galileans, who had seen all that he did at Jerusalem during the feast: for they likewise went to the feast.
then he enquired of them the hour when he began to mend: and they answered, yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
then they asked him, who is he that said to you take up your bed and walk?
Therefore sought they the more to kill him, because he had not only broken the sabbath, but called God his own Father, setting himself on an equality with God.
that all men should honour the son, even as they honour the father. he that honoureth not the son, honoureth not the father who hath sent him.
I declare unto you, the time is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God: and they that hear shall live.
let not this surprize you: for the time is coming, when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and they that have done good,
shall rise to the possession of life; and they that have done evil, shall rise to their condemnation.
But I have testimony greater than of John, for the works that the Father has given me so that I might complete them, the same works that I do, they testify about me that the Father has sent me.
You search the scriptures, for you think by their means to have eternal life, and they are the very writings which do testify of me.
and they testify of me: and yet ye will not come to me, that ye may have life.
where a great multitude followed him, invited by the miraculous cures which they saw him perform.
1-2 miles], they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming near the ship, and they were afraid.
there is a lad here, who hath five barley-loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
but Jesus said, make the men sit down. and as there was much grass in the place, they sat down to the number of about five thousand.
then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were sate down; and likewise of the fishes, as much as they would.
when they were filled, he said to his disciples, gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
they gathered them therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained after they all had been eating.
The people, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, cry'd out, this is of a truth that prophet who was to come into the world.
but Jesus perceiving they designed to come and take him by force to make him a king, retired again upon a mountain all alone.
In the evening, his disciples went down to the sea, And entering into the vessel, they went over the sea toward Capernaum:
they cross'd the sea to Capernaum: now when it was dark, Jesus was not come to them:
so when they had rowed about five and twenty, or thirty furlongs, seeing Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh to the ship, they were frightned.
They were terrified; but He called to them. "It is I," He said, "do not be afraid."
then they readily received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they were bound.
The day following, the multitude who had stood on the other side of the sea, because they saw there was no other vessel there, save that one into which his disciples went, and that Jesus went not into the vessel with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone:
there came other barks from Tiberias, nigh the place where they had eaten bread, after the Lord had given thanks.)
when the multitude therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they themselves got into the boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, master, when did you arrive here?
then said they to him, what shall we do, that our works may he agreeable to God?
but said they, what miracle then will you let us see to make us believe you? what strange work will you perform?
then said they, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
Then the Jews began to find fault with Jesus, because he said, "I am the bread which comes down out of heaven," and they kept asking.
And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how doth he now say, I am come down out of heaven?
It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh unto me.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
This led to an angry debate among the Jews. "How can this man," they argued, "give us his flesh to eat?"
This is the bread which has come down from heaven. It is not like the food which your fathers had: they took of the manna, and are dead; but he who takes this bread for food will have life for ever.
Thus many of his disciples, [when they] heard [it], said, "This saying is hard! Who can understand it?"
The spirit is the life giver; the flesh is of no value: the words which I have said to you are spirit and they are life.
But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.
Upon [hearing] this, many of Jesus' disciples turned back and refused to accompany Him anymore. [Note: They deserted Jesus physically as well as spiritually].
