'High' in the Bible
Again, the Devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
But Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and the men of high position exercise power over them.
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
At that moment one of those with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword. He struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his ear.
Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened.
Meanwhile, Peter was following Him at a distance right to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and was sitting with the temple police to see the outcome.
The high priest then stood up and said to Him, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?”
But Jesus kept silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “By the living God I place You under oath: tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!”
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Look, now you’ve heard the blasphemy!
how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the sacred bread—which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests—and also gave some to his companions?”
And he cried out with a loud voice, “What do You have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God, don’t torment me!”
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transformed in front of them,
Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them.
And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his ear.
They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes convened.
Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police, warming himself by the fire.
Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?”
But He kept silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?
While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s servants came.
He will be greatand will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Himthe throne of His father David.
The angel replied to her:“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy One to be bornwill be called the Son of God.
And child, you will be calleda prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lordto prepare His ways,
Because of our God’s merciful compassion, the Dawn from on high will visit us
After He left the synagogue, He entered Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him about her.
But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is gracious to the ungrateful and evil.
When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What do You have to do with me, Jesus, You Son of the Most High God? I beg You, don’t torment me!”
Then one of them struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear.
They seized Him, led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter was following at a distance.
And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”
Then a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn.
One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. (The slave’s name was Malchus.)
First they led Him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
Meanwhile, Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.
But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.
The high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching.
When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, “Is this the way you answer the high priest?”
Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
One of the high priest’s slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”
with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John and Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family.
Then the high priest took action. He and all his colleagues, those who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
In obedience to this, they entered the temple complex at daybreak and began to teach. When the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin—the full Senate of the sons of Israel—and sent orders to the jail to have them brought.
After they brought them in, they had them stand before the Sanhedrin, and the high priest asked,
“Is this true?” the high priest asked.
However, the Most High does not dwell in sanctuaries made with hands, as the prophet says:
So he got up and went. There was an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to worship in Jerusalem
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord. He went to the high priest
But the Jews incited the prominent women, who worshiped God, and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their district.
As she followed Paul and us she cried out, “These men, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation, are the slaves of the Most High God.”
as both the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. After I received letters from them to the brothers, I traveled to Damascus to bring those who were prisoners there to be punished in Jerusalem.
But the high priest Ananias ordered those who were standing next to him to strike him on the mouth.
And those standing nearby said, “Do you dare revile God’s high priest?”
“I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest,” replied Paul. “For it is written, You must not speak evil of a ruler of your people.”
After five days Ananias the high priest came down with some elders and a lawyer named Tertullus. These men presented their case against Paul to the governor.
For it says:When He ascended on high,He took prisoners into captivity; He gave gifts to people.
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
Therefore, He had to be like His brothers in every way, so that He could become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Therefore, holy brothers and companions in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession;
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to the confession.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin.
For every high priest taken from men is appointed in service to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
In the same way, the Messiah did not exalt Himself to become a high priest, but the One who said to Him, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father,
and He was declared by God a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
For this Melchizedek—King of Salem, priest of the Most High God,who met Abraham and blessed himas he returned from defeating the kings,
For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
He doesn’t need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do—first for their own sins, then for those of the people. He did this once for all when He offered Himself.
For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak, but the promise of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son, who has been perfected forever.
Now the main point of what is being said is this: We have this kind of high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; therefore it was necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.
But the high priest alone enters the second room, and he does that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.
But the Messiah has appeared, high priest of the good things that have come. In the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands (that is, not of this creation),
He did not do this to offer Himself many times, as the high priest enters the sanctuary yearly with the blood of another.
and since we have a great high priest over the house of God,
For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the most holy place by the high priest as a sin offering are burned outside the camp.
the stars of heaven fell to the earth as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a high wind;
He then carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
The city had a massive high wall, with 12 gates. Twelve angels were at the gates; the names of the 12 tribes of Israel’s sons were inscribed on the gates.
