'Light' in the Bible

Pay attention to Me, My people,and listen to Me, My nation;for instruction will come from Me,and My justice for a light to the nations.I will bring it about quickly.

Then your light will appear like the dawn,and your recovery will come quickly.Your righteousness will go before you,and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard.

and if you offer yourself to the hungry,and satisfy the afflicted one,then your light will shine in the darkness,and your night will be like noonday.

Therefore justice is far from us,and righteousness does not reach us.We hope for light, but there is darkness;for brightness, but we live in the night.

Arise, shine, for your light has come,and the glory of the Lord shines over you.

Nations will come to your light,and kings to the brightness of your radiance.

The sun will no longer be your light by day,and the brightness of the moon will not shine on you;but the Lord will be your everlasting light,and your God will be your splendor.

Your sun will no longer set,and your moon will not fade;for the Lord will be your everlasting light,and the days of your sorrow will be over.

I will not keep silent because of Zion,and I will not keep still because of Jerusalem,until her righteousness shines like a bright lightand her salvation, like a flaming torch.

I looked at the earth,and it was formless and empty.I looked to the heavens,and their light was gone.

The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven, and they pour out drink offerings to other gods so that they provoke Me to anger.

Give glory to the Lord your Godbefore He brings darkness,before your feet stumbleon the mountains at dusk.You wait for light,but He brings darkest gloomand makes thick darkness.

I will eliminate the sound of joy and gladness from them—the voice of the groom and the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp.

This is what the Lord says:The One who gives the sun for light by day,the fixed order of moon and stars for light by night,who stirs up the sea and makes its waves roar—Yahweh of Hosts is His name:

He has driven me away and forced me to walkin darkness instead of light.

I looked and there was a whirlwind coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing back and forth and brilliant light all around it. In the center of the fire, there was a gleam like amber.

From what seemed to be His waist up, I saw a gleam like amber, with what looked like fire enclosing it all around. From what seemed to be His waist down, I also saw what looked like fire. There was a brilliant light all around Him.

The appearance of the brilliant light all around was like that of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day. This was the appearance of the form of the Lord’s glory. When I saw it, I fell facedown and heard a voice speaking.

When I snuff you out,I will cover the heavensand darken their stars.I will cover the sun with a cloud,and the moon will not give its light.

He reveals the deep and hidden things;He knows what is in the darkness,and light dwells with Him.

At the first light of dawn the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den.

Woe to you who long for the Day of the Lord!What will the Day of the Lord be for you?It will be darkness and not light.

Won’t the Day of the Lordbe darkness rather than light,even gloom without any brightness in it?

Woe to those who dream up wickednessand prepare evil plans on their beds!At morning light they accomplish itbecause the power is in their hands.

Do not rejoice over me, my enemy!Though I have fallen, I will stand up;though I sit in darkness,the Lord will be my light.

Because I have sinned against Him,I must endure the Lord’s rageuntil He argues my caseand establishes justice for me.He will bring me into the light;I will see His salvation.

His brilliance is like light;rays are flashing from His hand.This is where His power is hidden.

On that day there will be no light; the sunlight and moonlight will diminish.

It will be a day known only to Yahweh, without day or night, but there will be light at evening.

The people who live in darknesshave seen a great light,and for those living in the shadowland of death,light has dawned.

“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.

No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.

But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness—how deep is that darkness!

What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper, proclaim on the housetops.

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

He was transformed in front of them, and His face shone like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light.

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days:The sun will be darkened,and the moon will not shed its light;the stars will fall from the sky,and the celestial powers will be shaken.

For nothing is concealed except to be revealed, and nothing hidden except to come to light.

“But in those days, after that tribulation:The sun will be darkened,and the moon will not shed its light;

a light for revelation to the Gentilesand glory to Your people Israel.

“No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light.

For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and come to light.

“No one lights a lamp and puts it in the cellar or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.

Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad, your body is also full of darkness.

Take care then, that the light in you is not darkness.

If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

“Or what woman who has 10 silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?

“The master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted astutely. For the sons of this age are more astute than the sons of light in dealing with their own people.

because the sun’s light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle.

Life was in Him,and that life was the light of men.

That light shines in the darkness,yet the darkness did not overcome it.

He came as a witnessto testify about the light,so that all might believe through him.

He was not the light,but he came to testify about the light.

The true light, who gives light to everyone,was coming into the world.

“This, then, is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.

For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed.

But anyone who lives by the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown to be accomplished by God.”

John was a burning and shining lamp, and for a time you were willing to enjoy his light.

Then Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

“Aren’t there 12 hours in a day?” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

If anyone walks during the night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him.”

Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn’t overtake you. The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.

While you have the light, believe in the light so that you may become sons of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.

I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me would not remain in darkness.

As he traveled and was nearing Damascus, a light from heaven suddenly flashed around him.

Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. Striking Peter on the side, he woke him up and said, “Quick, get up!” Then the chains fell off his wrists.

For this is what the Lord has commanded us:I have made youa light for the Gentilesto bring salvationto the ends of the earth.”

“As I was traveling and near Damascus, about noon an intense light from heaven suddenly flashed around me.

Now those who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice of the One who was speaking to me.

“Since I couldn’t see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus.

King Agrippa, while on the road at midday, I saw a light from heaven brighter than the sun, shining around me and those traveling with me.

to open their eyes so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that by faith in Me they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified.’

that the Messiah must suffer, and that as the first to rise from the dead, He would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”

and if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light to those in darkness,

The night is nearly over, and the daylight is near, so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Therefore don’t judge anything prematurely, before the Lord comes, who will both bring to light what is hidden in darkness and reveal the intentions of the hearts. And then praise will come to each one from God.

In their case, the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.

Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?

And no wonder! For Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

and to shed light for all about the administration of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light—

for the fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth—

Everything exposed by the light is made clear,

for what makes everything clear is light. Therefore it is said:Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead,and the Messiah will shine on you.

giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.

For you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness.

the only One who has immortality,dwelling in unapproachable light;no one has seen or can see Him,to Him be honor and eternal might.Amen.

This has now been made evidentthrough the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus,who has abolished deathand has brought life and immortality to lightthrough the gospel.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood,a holy nation, a people for His possession,so that you may proclaim the praisesof the One who called you out of darknessinto His marvelous light.

Now this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him.

But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.

The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother is in the darkness until now.

The one who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
