Psalm 78

² I will open, in a parable, my mouth, I will pour forth enigmas out of antiquity; -

² I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

² I will ^(C)open my mouth in a parable;I will utter ^(D)dark sayings of old,

² I will declare wise sayings;I will speak mysteries from the past^(C)—

² I will tell a parable, speaking riddles from long ago

⁴ We will not withhold them from their children, To a later generation, recounting the praises of Yahweh, Even his might and his wonders which he wrought;

⁴ We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

⁴ We will ^(F)not conceal them from their children,But ^(G)tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,And His strength and His ^(H)wondrous works that He has done.

⁴ We must not hide them from their children,but must tell a future generationthe praises of the Lord,His might, and the wonderful worksHe has performed.^(E)

⁴ We will not withhold them from their descendants; we'll declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD his might and awesome deeds that he has performed.

⁶ To the end, A later generation, might come m know, Children who should be born, Who should arise, and recount them to their children;

⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

^{6 (M)}That the generation to come might know, even ^(N)the children yet to be born,That they may arise and ^(O)tell them to their children,

⁶ so that a future generation—children yet to be born—might know.They were to rise and tell their children^(G)

⁶ in order that the next generation children yet to be born will know them and in turn teach them to their children.

⁸ And not become, like their fathers, a generation stubborn and rebellious, - A generation that fixed not their heart, Neither was their spirit, faithful with GOD.

⁸ And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

⁸ And ^(R)not be like their fathers,A ^(S)stubborn and rebellious generation,A generation that ^(T)did not ^(d)prepare its heartAnd whose spirit was not ^(U)faithful to God.

⁸ Then they would not be like their fathers,a stubborn and rebellious generation,a generation whose heart was not loyaland whose spirit was not faithful to God.^(I)

⁸ They will not be like the rebellious generation of their ancestors, a rebellious generation, whose heart was not steadfast, and whose spirits were unfaithful to God.

¹⁰ They kept not the covenant of God, And, in his law, refused to walk;

¹⁰ They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

¹⁰ They ^(X)did not keep the covenant of GodAnd refused to ^(Y)walk in His law;

¹⁰ They did not keep God’s covenantand refused to live by His law.^(K)

¹² In presence of their fathers, wrought he, wondrously, - In the land of Egypt - the field of Zoan:

¹² Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

^{12 (AA)}He wrought wonders before their fathersIn the land of Egypt, in the ^(AB)field of Zoan.

¹² He worked wonders in the sight of their fathersin the land of Egypt, the region of Zoan.^(M)

¹² He performed marvelous things in the presence of their ancestors in the land of Egypt in the fields of Zoan.

¹⁴ And led them, by a cloud, in the daytime, And all the night, by a light of fire;

¹⁴ In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁴ Then He led them with the cloud by ^(AE)dayAnd all the night with a ^(AF)light of fire.

¹⁴ He led them with a cloud by dayand with a fiery light throughout the night.^(O)

¹⁴ He led them with a cloud during the day, and during the night with light from the fire.

¹⁶ And he brought forth streams out of the cliff, And caused waters to flow down, like rivers.

¹⁶ He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

¹⁸ They put GOD to the proof in their heart, By asking food to their mind:

¹⁸ And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

¹⁸ And in their heart they ^(AJ)put God to the testBy asking ^(AK)food according to their desire.

¹⁸ They deliberately^(a) tested God,demanding the food they craved.^(S)

¹⁸ To test God was in their minds, when they demanded food to satisfy their cravings.

²⁰ Lo! he hath smitten a rock, And waters, have gushed out, Yea, torrents, have rushed along, - Food also, can he give? Or provide flesh for his people?

²⁰ Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

²⁰ “Behold, He ^(AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,And streams were overflowing;Can He give bread also?Will He provide ^(g)(AN)meat for His people?”

²⁰ Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;torrents overflowed.^(T)But can He also provide breador furnish meat for His people?”^(U)

²⁰ It's true that Moses struck the rock so that water flowed forth and torrents of water gushed out, but is he also able to give bread or to supply meat for his people?"

²² Because, They believed not in God, Nor trusted in his salvation;

²² Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

²² Because they ^(AP)did not believe in GodAnd did not trust in His salvation.

²² because they did not believe Godor rely on His salvation.^(W)

²² because they didn't believe in God and didn't trust in his deliverance.

²⁴ And had rained on them manna to eat, And, the corn of the heavens, had given to them:

²⁴ And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

²⁴ He ^(AR)rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them ^(i)(AS)food from heaven.

²⁴ He rained manna for them to eat;He gave them grain from heaven.^(Y)

²⁴ so that manna rained down on them for food and he sent them the grain of heaven.

²⁶ He let loose an east wind in the heavens, Then guided he, in his might, a south wind;

²⁶ He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

²⁶ He ^(AU)caused the east wind to blow in the heavensAnd by His ^(m)power He directed the south wind.

²⁶ He made the east wind blow in the skiesand drove the south wind by His might.^(AA)

²⁶ He stirred up the east wind in the heavens and drove the south wind by his might.

²⁸ And let them fall in the midst of their camp, - Round about their habitations.

²⁸ And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

²⁸ Then He let them fall in the midst of ^(o)their camp,Round about their dwellings.

²⁸ He caused these to fall in the middle of the camp and all around their tents.

³⁰ They had not turned away from what they had longed for, Yet was their food in their mouth,

³⁰ They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

³² For all this, sinned they still, And believed not in his wonders;

³⁴ If he slew of them, then they sought him, Yea they turned, and did earnestly seek GOD;

³⁴ When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God.

³⁴ When He killed them, then they ^(BD)sought Him,And returned and searched ^(BE)diligently for God;

³⁴ When He killed some of them,the rest began to seek Him;they repented and searched for God.^(AG)

³⁴ When he struck them, they sought him; they repented, and eagerly sought God.

³⁶ So they spake him fair with their mouth, And, with their tongue, did promise him falsely;

³⁶ Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

³⁶ But they ^(BH)deceived Him with their mouthAnd ^(BI)lied to Him with their tongue.

³⁶ But they deceived Him with their mouths,they lied to Him with their tongues,^(AI)

³⁶ But they deceived him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.

³⁸ Yet, he, full of compassion, would put a propitiatory-covering over iniquity, and not destroy, - Yea, many a time, turned he back his anger, And would not stir up all his wrath.

³⁸ But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

³⁸ But He, being ^(BK)compassionate, ^(t)(BL)forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them;And often He ^(u)(BM)restrained His angerAnd did not arouse all His wrath.

³⁸ Yet He was compassionate;He atoned for^(f) their guiltand did not destroy them.He often turned His anger asideand did not unleash^(g) all His wrath.^(AK)

³⁸ But he, being merciful, forgave their iniquity and didn't destroy them; He restrained his anger and didn't vent all his wrath.

⁴⁰ How often they, Resisted him in the desert, Vexed him, in the waste:

⁴⁰ How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

⁴⁰ How often they ^(BQ)rebelled against Him in the wildernessAnd ^(BR)grieved Him in the ^(BS)desert!

⁴⁰ How often they rebelled against Himin the wildernessand grieved Him in the desert.

⁴² They remembered not his hand - The day, When he ransomed them from the adversary;

⁴² They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

⁴² They did not remember His power shownon the day He redeemed them from the foe,^(AO)

⁴⁴ When he turned, into blood, their Nile-streams, And, their own rivers, could they not drink;

⁴⁴ And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

⁴⁴ And ^(CA)turned their rivers to blood,And their streams, they could not drink.

⁴⁶ When he gave to the corn-locust their produce, And their toil, to the swarming locust;

⁴⁶ He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

⁵⁰ He leveled a path for his anger, Withheld not, from death, their soul, But, their life - to the pestilence, he delivered:

⁵⁰ He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

⁵⁰ He leveled a path for His anger;He did not spare their soul from death,But ^(CI)gave over their life to the plague,

⁵⁰ He blazed a path for his anger; he did not stop short from killing them, but handed them over to pestilence.

⁵² And he set forth, like sheep, his people, And guided them, like a flock in the desert;

⁵² But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

⁵² But He ^(CM)led forth His own people like sheepAnd guided them in the wilderness ^(CN)like a flock;

⁵² He led His people out like sheepand guided them like a flock in the wilderness.^(AZ)

⁵² Yet he led out his people like sheep, guiding them like a flock in the desert.

⁵⁴ Then brought he them within his own holy bounds, The mountain-range, which his right hand made his own:

⁵⁴ And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

⁵⁴ So ^(CQ)He brought them to His holy ^(aa)land,To this ^(ab)(CR)hill country ^(CS)which His right hand had gained.

⁵⁴ He brought them to His holy land,to the mountain His right hand acquired.^(BB)

⁵⁴ He brought the people to the border of his holy mountain, which he acquired by his might.

⁵⁶ But they tested and resisted God Most High, And, his testimonies, did not observe;

⁵⁶ Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

⁵⁶ Yet they ^(ac)(CV)tempted and ^(CW)rebelled against the Most High GodAnd did not keep His testimonies,

⁵⁶ But they rebelliously tested the Most High God,for they did not keep His decrees.^(BE)

⁵⁶ But they tested the Most High God by rebelling against him, and they did not obey his statutes.

⁵⁸ And provoked him to anger with their high places, And, with their images, used to move him to jealousy.

⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

⁵⁸ For they ^(CZ)provoked Him with their ^(DA)high placesAnd ^(DB)aroused His jealousy with their ^(DC)graven images.

⁶⁰ So he gave up the habitation of Shiloh, The tent he had set up among Men;

⁶⁰ So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

⁶² And delivered up, to the sword, his people, And, with his own inheritance, was he wroth;

⁶² He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

⁶² He surrendered His people to the swordbecause He was enraged with His heritage.^(BK)

⁶⁴ His priests, by the sword, did fall, And, his widows, were not able to bewail.

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
