I tell you that this man went down to his home justified rather than the Pharisee. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy.
When Jesus noticed this, he said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!
who will not receive many times more in this age -- and in the age to come, eternal life."
But the twelve understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what Jesus meant.
Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this household, because he too is a son of Abraham!
But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to be king over us!'
After Jesus had said this, he continued on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
saying, "If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
and said to him, "Tell us: By what authority are you doing these things? Or who it is who gave you this authority?"
Then he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey for a long time.
So he sent another slave. They beat this one too, treated him outrageously, and sent him away empty-handed.
So he sent still a third. They even wounded this one, and threw him out.
But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another, 'This is the heir; let's kill him so the inheritance will be ours!'
He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When the people heard this, they said, "May this never happen!"
Everyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls will be crushed."
Then the experts in the law and the chief priests wanted to arrest him that very hour, because they realized he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.
and then the third married her, and in this same way all seven died, leaving no children.
So Jesus said to them, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
He said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.
But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.
Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people.
I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
"But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap.
And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves.
Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.
For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, 'And he was counted with the transgressors.' For what is written about me is being fulfilled."
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done."
But Jesus said, "Enough of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.
Day after day when I was with you in the temple courts, you did not arrest me. But this is your hour, and that of the power of darkness!"
Then a slave girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, stared at him and said, "This man was with him too!"
And after about an hour still another insisted, "Certainly this man was with him, because he too is a Galilean."
They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar and claiming that he himself is Christ, a king."
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no basis for an accusation against this man."
Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
That very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other, for prior to this they had been enemies.
and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. When I examined him before you, I did not find this man guilty of anything you accused him of doing.
But they all shouted out together, "Take this man away! Release Barabbas for us!"
(This was a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder.)
For this is certain: The days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore children, and the breasts that never nursed!'
There was also an inscription over him, "This is the king of the Jews."
And we rightly so, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong."
Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" And after he said this he breathed his last.
Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, "Certainly this man was innocent!"
And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.
While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire.
But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.
Furthermore, some women of our group amazed us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
At this point their eyes were opened and they recognized him. Then he vanished out of their sight.
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
John testified about him and shouted out, "This one was the one about whom I said, 'He who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'"
Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
This is the one about whom I said, 'After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'
And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining -- this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God."
When John's two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
Jesus replied, "Woman, why are you saying this to me? My time has not yet come."
Jesus did this as the first of his miraculous signs, in Cana of Galilee. In this way he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there a few days.
Jesus replied, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up again."
Then the Jewish leaders said to him, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and are you going to raise it up in three days?"
So after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the saying that Jesus had spoken.
For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
Now this is the basis for judging: that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil.
After this, Jesus and his disciples came into Judean territory, and there he spent time with them and was baptizing.
The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly when he hears the bridegroom's voice. This then is my joy, and it is complete.
"Sir," the woman said to him, "you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water?
Surely you're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock."
Jesus replied, "Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again.
The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water."
for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!"
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
For in this instance the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.'
They said to the woman, "No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world."
Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee.
After this there was a Jewish feast, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
After this Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "Look, you have become well. Don't sin any more, lest anything worse happen to you."
For this reason the Jewish leaders were trying even harder to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was also calling God his own Father, thus making himself equal with God.
"Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
(I do not accept human testimony, but I say this so that you may be saved.)
After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias).
(Now Jesus said this to test him, for he knew what he was going to do.)
Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus performed, they began to say to one another, "This is certainly the Prophet who is to come into the world."
Jesus replied, "This is the deed God requires -- to believe in the one whom he sent."
Now this is the will of the one who sent me -- that I should not lose one person of every one he has given me, but raise them all up at the last day.
For this is the will of my Father -- for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
and they said, "Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"
This is the bread that has come down from heaven, so that a person may eat from it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."
Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began to argue with one another, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread your ancestors ate, but then later died. The one who eats this bread will live forever."
Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said, "This is a difficult saying! Who can understand it?"
