Later the king of Ammon died. His son Hanun became king in his place. David thought: I will show kindness to Hanun since his father Nahash showed me kindness. David sent his servants to comfort Hanun after his father's death. When David's servants entered Ammonite territory, the Ammonite princes asked their master Hanun: Do you think David is honoring your father because he sent men to comfort you? Hanun seized David's men and shaved off half of each man's beard. He cut off their clothes from the waist down, and sent them away. David was told what happened. He sent someone to meet them because they were deeply humiliated. The king said to them: Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown back. Then return to Jerusalem.

Judas, his betrayer, heard he was to be put to death. Out of regret, he took the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and those in authority. He said: I have done wrong in giving a righteous man to you. He left the silver in the Temple. Then he went away and hanged himself.

The following regulations are to be observed for a long lasting time to come. On the tenth day of the seventh month the Israelites and the foreigners living among them must fast and must not do any work. On that day the ritual is to be performed to purify them from all their sins, so that they will be ritually clean. That day is to be a very holy day, one on which they fast and do no work at all. These regulations are to be observed for a long lasting time to come.

He said to the people: Get ready for the third day. Do not go near a woman for sexual intercourse.

The tenth day of this seventh month is a special day for the payment for sins. There will be a holy assembly. Humble yourselves, and bring Jehovah a sacrifice by fire. Do not do any work that day. It is a special day for the payment for sins. It is a time when you pay compensation for wrongdoing and make peace with Jehovah your God. I will destroy those who do any work on that day. Do not do any work! It is a long lasting law for generations to come wherever you live. It is a day of worship (sabbath), a day when you do not work. Humble yourselves starting on the evening of the ninth day of the month. From that evening to the next, observe the day of worship.

Call a holy assembly on the tenth day of the seventh month. Humble yourselves do no work.

He then spoke to both his disciples and the crowd. He said: If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his stake and follow me. Whoever would save his life will lose it. Whoever would lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.

Then Jesus told his disciples: If any man wants to follow me (be mine), let him deny (disown) himself, and take up his stake and follow me (Greek: akoloutheo moi, let him be following me) (accompany me) (be in the same way with me). He who wants to save his life will lose it. He who is willing to lose his life for my sake will find it.

He told them all: If any man would come after me let him deny himself. Let him take up his stake (of self-denial) daily, and follow me. He who would save his life shall lose it. He who would lose his life for my sake shall save it.

By this we know love, because he (Jesus) gave his life for us. We ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

for if you live according to flesh, you are about to die. If by the Spirit, you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Make your members that are upon the earth dead with regard to fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness (greed), which is idolatry.

If your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away! It is better to lose a part of your body then to have your whole body destroyed in the ever-burning fires of the Valley of Hinnom. If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better to lose part of your body, than for your whole body to be destroyed in the ever-burning fire. (Figuratively: lose prospect for everlasting life; ever-burning fire means total destruction.)

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have impaled the flesh with its passions and lusts.

Never should I boast except in the stake (symbolic: self-denial and atonement) of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is through this stake that the world has been impaled to me, and I to the world.

Beloved, I request that you as aliens and strangers abstain from fleshly lust (desires), which causes conflict in you.

We know this that our old self was impaled with him that the body of sin might be destroyed, that we should no longer be in bondage to sin. He who has died is freed from sin.

You put away your former way (course) (behavior) (conversation) of life, the old self that was corrupt with the lusts of deceit. You are renewed in the spirit (vital principles) (attitude) of your mind (understanding).

I have been impaled with Christ. It is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me. The life that I now live in the flesh (physical body) I live by faith. This is the faith that is in the Son of God. He loved me and gave himself up for me.

Or are you ignorant to the fact that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ; that you should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit to God.

For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our mortal flesh. So then death works in us, but life in you.

I want to know him and the power of his resurrection. I want to know the fellowship of his sufferings and become conformed to his death.

If you died with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to ordinances:

This is a faithful saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him.

But I discipline my body, and bring it into subjection, so that after I have preached to others I will not be disqualified.

These have, indeed, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body. But these are not of any value against the indulgence of the flesh.

Beware of the dogs (impure men) (false teachers)! Beware of the evil workers! Beware of the mutilation of the body. We are those with true circumcision who worship by the Spirit of God. We glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.

If you died with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to ordinances: Do not handle. Do not taste. Do not touch. These are the precepts and doctrines of men.

The Spirit explicitly says that some will fall away from the faith (truth) in later times. Spirits and doctrines of demons will seduce them, through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron. They will forbid marrying, [and command] to abstain from food, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.read more.
For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with thanksgiving. This is because it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.
