'Depths' in the Bible

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the sources of the watery depths burst open, the floodgates of the sky were opened,

The sources of the watery depths and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky stopped.

The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.

And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

For fire has been kindled because of My angerand burns to the depths of Sheol;it devours the land and its produce,and scorches the foundations of the mountains.

He said about Joseph:May his land be blessed by the Lordwith the dew of heaven’s bountyand the watery depths that lie beneath;

The depths of the sea became visible,the foundations of the world were exposedat the rebuke of the Lord,at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.

You divided the sea before them,and they crossed through it on dry ground.You hurled their pursuers into the depthslike a stone into churning waters.

Can you fathom the depths of Godor discover the limits of the Almighty?

Mankind limits the darkness as they search the deepest depths for ore in unfathomable darkness.

The ocean depths say, “It’s not in me,”while the sea declares, “I don’t have it.”

so that in the depths of my deceived heart I worshipped them with my mouth and hands,

See how He spreads His lightning around Himand covers the depths of the sea.

Have you traveled to the sources of the seaor walked in the depths of the oceans?

when water becomes as hard as stone,and the surface of the watery depths is frozen?

He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron;he makes the sea like an ointment jar.

The depths of the sea became visible,the foundations of the world were exposed,at Your rebuke, Lord,at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.

He gathers the waters of the sea into a heap;He puts the depths into storehouses.

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your justice is like the great depths of the sea. You deliver both people and animals, LORD.

Therefore we will not be afraid,though the earth tremblesand the mountains toppleinto the depths of the seas,

But those who seek to destroy my lifewill go into the depths of the earth.

The Lord said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea:

I have sunk in deep mire, And there is no standing, I have come into the depths of the waters, And a flood hath overflown me.

Deliver me out of the mire, let me not sink; let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the depths of waters.

Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.

He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

"How terrible it will be for you who go to great depths to hide your plans from the LORD, you whose deeds have been done in the dark, and who say, "Who can see us? Who has recognized us?'

But hail will level the forest,and the city will sink into the depths.

Rejoice, heavens, for the Lord has acted;shout, depths of the earth.Break out into singing, mountains,forest, and every tree in it.For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,and glorifies Himself through Israel.

who says to the depths of the sea, “Be dry,”and I will dry up your rivers;

Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

and led them through the depthslike a horse in the wilderness,so that they did not stumble.

I am the LORD who searches the heart, who tests the inner depths to give to each person according to what he deserves, according to the fruit of his deeds.

or "Who will go down into the depths?' (that is, to bring the Messiah back from the dead)."

but to us did God reveal them through His Spirit, for the Spirit all things doth search, even the depths of God,

Three times I was beaten with rods by the Romans.Once I was stoned by my enemies.Three times I was shipwrecked.I have spent a night and a dayin the open sea.

(Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had previously descended [from the heights of heaven] into the lower parts of the earth?

These men are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm, for whom the utter depths of darkness have been reserved.

wild sea waves, spewing out the foam of their shame; wayward stars for whom the utter depths of eternal darkness have been reserved.

But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

The fifth angel blew his trumpet; and I saw a Star which had fallen from Heaven to the earth; and to him was given the key of the depths of the bottomless pit,

and he opened the depths of the bottomless pit. And smoke came up out of the pit resembling the smoke of a vast furnace, so that the sun was darkened, and the air also, by reason of the smoke of the pit.
