'Poor' in the Bible
“The poor in spirit are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
So whenever you give to the poor, don’t sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. I assure you: They’ve got their reward!
But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
the blind see, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news.
“If you want to be perfect,” Jesus said to him, “go, sell your belongings and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
“This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor.”
You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.
Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little.
Summoning His disciples, He said to them, “I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury.
For this oil might have been sold for more than 300 denarii and given to the poor.” And they began to scold her.
You always have the poor with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have Me.
The Spirit of the Lord is on Me,because He has anointed Meto preach good news to the poor.He has sent Meto proclaim freedom to the captivesand recovery of sight to the blind,to set free the oppressed,
Then looking up at His disciples, He said:You who are poor are blessed, because the kingdom of God is yours.
He replied to them, “Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news.
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
On the contrary, when you host a banquet, invite those who are poor, maimed, lame, or blind.
“So the slave came back and reported these things to his master. Then in anger, the master of the house told his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in here the poor, maimed, blind, and lame!’
But a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, was left at his gate.
One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.
When Jesus heard this, He told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord! And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much!”
He also saw a poor widow dropping in two tiny coins.
“I tell you the truth,” He said. “This poor widow has put in more than all of them.
“Why wasn’t this fragrant oil sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?”
He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.
For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”
Since Judas kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,” or that he should give something to the poor.
for Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.
And if I donate all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body in order to boastbut do not have love, I gain nothing.
as grieving yet always rejoicing;as poor yet enriching many;as having nothing yet possessing everything.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though He was rich, for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich.
As it is written:He scattered; He gave to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.
They asked only that we would remember the poor, which I made every effort to do.
For example, a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in dirty clothes also comes in.
If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor man, “Stand over there,” or, “Sit here on the floor by my footstool,”
Listen, my dear brothers: Didn’t God choose the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He has promised to those who love Him?
Yet you dishonored that poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?
Because you say, ‘I’m rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,’ and you don’t know that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked,
And he requires everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,
