'Poor' in the Bible
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.
Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
It could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor!"
For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!
As Jesus looked at him, he felt love for him and said, "You lack one thing. Go, sell whatever you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny.
He called his disciples and said to them, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others.
It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor!" So they spoke angrily to her.
For you will always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want. But you will not always have me!
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God belongs to you.
So he answered them, "Go tell John what you have seen and heard: The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news proclaimed to them.
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide yourselves purses that do not wear out -- a treasure in heaven that never decreases, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.
But when you host an elaborate meal, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
So the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the master of the household was furious and said to his slave, 'Go out quickly to the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.'
But at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus whose body was covered with sores,
"Now the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, half of my possessions I now give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!"
He said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.
"Why wasn't this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?"
(Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)
For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!"
Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.)
After several years I came to bring to my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings,

as sorrowful, but always rejoicing, as poor, but making many rich, as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! Did not God choose the poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?
But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts?
Because you say, "I am rich and have acquired great wealth, and need nothing," but do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked,
He also caused everyone (small and great, rich and poor, free and slave) to obtain a mark on their right hand or on their forehead.
