'Called' in the Bible
and Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
and knew her not until she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.
Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing;
And he was there until the death of Herod, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
and came and dwelt in a town called Nazareth; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, He shall be called a Nazaraean.
And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers;
And going on thence he saw other two brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their trawl-nets, and he called them;
Blessed the peace-makers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.
But I say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to be called before the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire.
And Jesus, passing on thence, saw a man sitting at the tax-office, called Matthew, and says to him, Follow me. And he rose up and followed him.
And having called to him his twelve disciples, he gave them power over unclean spirits, so that they should cast them out, and heal every disease and every bodily weakness.
Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
It is sufficient for the disciple that he should become as his teacher, and the bondman as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more those of his household?
Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas?
And having called to him the crowd, he said to them, Hear and understand:
But Jesus, having called his disciples to him, said, I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat, and I would not send them away fasting lest they should faint on the way.
And Jesus having called a little child to him, set it in their midst,
Then his lord, having called him to him, says to him, Wicked bondman! I forgave thee all that debt because thou besoughtest me;
Thus shall the last be first, and the first last; for many are called ones, but few chosen ones.
But Jesus having called them to him, said, Ye know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them, and the great exercise authority over them.
And Jesus, having stopped, called them and said, What will ye that I shall do to you?
And he says to them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of robbers.
and salutations in the market-places, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
But ye, be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor, and all ye are brethren.
Neither be called instructors, for one is your instructor, the Christ.
For it is as if a man going away out of a country called his own bondmen and delivered to them his substance.
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together to the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas,
Then one of the twelve, he who was called Judas Iscariote, went to the chief priests
Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and says to the disciples, Sit here until I go away and pray yonder.
Wherefore that field has been called Blood-field unto this day.
They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?
Pilate says to them, What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified.
And having come to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a skull,
saying, Sir, we have called to mind that that deceiver said when he was still alive, After three days I arise.
and straightway he called them; and leaving their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, they went away after him.
And having called them to him, he said to them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
And having called again the crowd, he said to them, Hear me, all of you, and understand:
In those days, there being again a great crowd, and they having nothing that they could eat, having called his disciples to him, he says to them,
And having called the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.
And sitting down he called the twelve; and he says to them, If any one would be first, he shall be last of all, and minister of all.
But Jesus having called them to him, says to them, Ye know that those who are esteemed to rule over the nations exercise lordship over them; and their great men exercise authority over them;
And Jesus, standing still, desired him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying to him, Be of good courage, rise up, he calls thee.
And he taught saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? but ye have made it a den of robbers.
And having called his disciples to him he said to them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow has cast in more than all who have cast into the treasury:
And the soldiers led him away into the court which is called the praetorium, and they call together the whole band.
And they bring him to the place called Golgotha, which, being interpreted, is Place of a skull.
And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and having called to him the centurion, he inquired of him if he had long died.
He shall be great, and shall be called Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father;
And the angel answering said to her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and power of the Highest overshadow thee, wherefore the holy thing also which shall be born shall be called Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, she also has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her that was called barren:
And it came to pass on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called it after the name of his father, Zacharias.
And his mother answering said, No; but he shall be called John.
And they said to her, There is no one among thy kinsfolk who is called by this name.
And they made signs to his father as to what he might wish it to be called.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways;
and Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city Nazareth to Judaea, to David's city, the which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called Jesus, which was the name given by the angel before he had been conceived in the womb.
(as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord),
And when it was day he called his disciples, and having chosen out twelve from them, whom also he named apostles:
and Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon who was called Zealot,
And it came to pass afterwards he went into a city called Nain, and many of his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
and John, having called two of his disciples, sent to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another?
and certain women who had been healed of wicked spirits and infirmities, Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
And having called together the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all demons, and to heal diseases,
And the apostles having returned related to him whatever they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart into a desert place of a city called Bethsaida.
And she had a sister called Mary, who also, having sat down at the feet of Jesus was listening to his word.
And Jesus, seeing her, called to her, and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
I am no longer worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee; I am no longer worthy to be called thy son.
And having called one of the servants, he inquired what these things might be.
And having called him, he said to him, What is this that I hear of thee? give the reckoning of thy stewardship, for thou canst be no longer steward.
And having called to him each one of the debtors of his own lord, he said to the first, How much owest thou to my lord?
And he called out saying, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
And behold, there was a man by name called Zacchaeus, and he was chief tax-gatherer, and he was rich.
And having called his own ten bondmen, he gave to them ten minas, and said to them, Trade while I am coming.
And it came to pass on his arrival back again, having received the kingdom, that he desired these bondmen to whom he gave the money to be called to him, in order that he might know what every one had gained by trading.
And it came to pass as he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the mountain called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
But that the dead rise, even Moses shewed in the section of the bush, when he called the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob;
And by day he was teaching in the temple, and by night, going out, he remained abroad on the mountain called the mount of Olives;
Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the passover, drew nigh,
And he said to them, The kings of the nations rule over them, and they that exercise authority over them are called benefactors.
As he was yet speaking, behold, a crowd, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went on before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him.
And Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
And when they came to the place which is called Skull, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, the other on the left.
And behold, two of them were going on the same day to a village distant sixty stadia from Jerusalem, called Emmaus;
And he led him to Jesus. Jesus looking at him said, Thou art Simon, the son of Jonas; thou shalt be called Cephas (which interpreted is stone).
Nathanael says to him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee.
He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
The woman says to him, I know that Messias is coming, who is called Christ; when he comes he will tell us all things.
Now there is in Jerusalem, at the sheepgate, a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
He answered and said, A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw.
The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight.
They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful.
If he called them gods to whom the word of God came (and the scripture cannot be broken),
Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee.
Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples.
The crowd therefore that was with him bore witness because he had called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from among the dead.
