'Understand' in the Bible
For this reason I speak to them in parables: Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear nor do they understand.
And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: 'You will listen carefully yet will never understand, you will look closely yet will never comprehend.
For the heart of this people has become dull; they are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'
When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches what was sown in his heart; this is the seed sown along the path.
Then he called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.
Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?
Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
How could you not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!"

He said to them, "Don't you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any parable?

He said to them, "Are you so foolish? Don't you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him?
When he learned of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you arguing about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Have your hearts been hardened?
But they did not understand this statement and were afraid to ask him.
"But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.
But he denied it: "I don't even understand what you're talking about!" Then he went out to the gateway, and a rooster crowed.
Yet his parents did not understand the remark he made to them.
He said, "You have been given the opportunity to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that although they see they may not see, and although they hear they may not understand.
But they did not understand this statement; its meaning had been concealed from them, so that they could not grasp it. Yet they were afraid to ask him about this statement.
He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you understand it?"
But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures,
Jesus answered, "Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you don't understand these things?
Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said, "This is a difficult saying! Who can understand it?"
(They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.)
Why don't you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept my teaching.
Jesus told them this parable, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
But if I do them, even if you do not believe me, believe the deeds, so that you may come to know and understand that I am in the Father and the Father is in me."
(His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.)
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them."
Jesus replied, "You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things."
So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you?
If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
I no longer call you slaves, because the slave does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have revealed to you everything I heard from my Father.
So they kept on repeating, "What is the meaning of what he says, 'In a little while'? We do not understand what he is talking about."
Now they understand that everything you have given me comes from you,
because I have given them the words you have given me. They accepted them and really understand that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
(For they did not yet understand the scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead.)
He thought his own people would understand that God was delivering them through him, but they did not understand.
So Philip ran up to it and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. He asked him, "Do you understand what you're reading?"
Then Peter started speaking: "I now truly understand that God does not show favoritism in dealing with people,
Those who were with me saw the light, but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me.
when he said, 'Go to this people and say, "You will keep on hearing, but will never understand, and you will keep on looking, but will never perceive.
For the heart of this people has become dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them."'
For I don't understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want -- instead, I do what I hate.
But again I ask, didn't Israel understand? First Moses says, "I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; with a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger."
but as it is written: "Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand."
The unbeliever does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him. And he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
So I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
For we do not write you anything other than what you can read and also understand. But I hope that you will understand completely
so then, understand that those who believe are the sons of Abraham.
Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not understand the law?
When reading this, you will be able to understand my insight into this secret of Christ.
They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or the things they insist on so confidently.
But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come.
By faith we understand that the worlds were set in order at God's command, so that the visible has its origin in the invisible.
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.
But these men, like irrational animals -- creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed -- do not understand whom they are insulting, and consequently in their destruction they will be destroyed,
Above all, understand this: In the last days blatant scoffers will come, being propelled by their own evil urges
speaking of these things in all his letters. Some things in these letters are hard to understand, things the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they also do to the rest of the scriptures.
But these men do not understand the things they slander, and they are being destroyed by the very things that, like irrational animals, they instinctively comprehend.
The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers, I will give him some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and on that stone will be written a new name that no one can understand except the one who receives it.'
