So, as God's elect [i.e., His people], holy and dearly loved [by Him], clothe yourselves with a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

[And] because He could look forward to joy, He endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right side of God's throne. Now think about how Jesus endured such opposition against Himself from sinners, so that you do not grow weary and become discouraged [yourself].

In your love for your brothers, show tender affection toward one another. Try to outdo one another in showing respect [for each other]. Be enthusiastic instead of lazy. Be fervent in your spirit [Note: Some translators take "spirit" here to refer to the "Holy Spirit"], [as you] serve the Lord. Be joyful as you hope [i.e., for future blessings]. Persevere in spite of the troubles you experience. Continue steadfastly in prayer.
For you need to be steadfast so that, after you have done what God wants, you will receive the promise [of an inheritance. See 9:15]. [Hab. 2:3-4 LXX says], "For [it will be] only a short time [before] He [i.e., Christ], who is coming, will be here without delay.
