Let all bitterness, passion, anger, brawling, and abusive language be banished from among you, as well as all malice.

Do not disparage one another, Brothers. He who disparages his Brother, or passes judgment on his Brother, disparages the Law and passes judgment on the Law. But, if you pass judgment on the Law, you are not obeying it, but judging it.

And, because you do not run to the same extremes of profligacy as others, they are astonished, and malign you.

"So you are a King after all!" exclaimed Pilate. "Yes, it is true I am a King," answered Jesus. "I was born for this, I have come into the world for this--to bear testimony to the Truth. Every one who is on the side of Truth listens to my voice."

Pilate again came outside, and said to the people: "Look! I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find nothing with which he can be charged." Then Jesus came outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe; and Pilate said to them: "Here is the man!"

We meet slander with gentle appeals. We have been treated as the scum of the earth, the vilest of the vile, to this very hour.

For I am afraid that perhaps, when I come, I may find that you are not what I want you to be, and, on the other hand, that you may find that I am what you do not want me to be. I am afraid that I may find quarreling, jealousy, ill-feeling, rivalry, slandering, back-biting, self-assertion, and disorder.

They reveled in every form of wickedness, evil, greed, vice. Their lives were full of envy, murder, quarreling, treachery, malice.

For I am afraid that perhaps, when I come, I may find that you are not what I want you to be, and, on the other hand, that you may find that I am what you do not want me to be. I am afraid that I may find quarreling, jealousy, ill-feeling, rivalry, slandering, back-biting, self-assertion, and disorder.

They became back-biters, slanderers, impious, insolent, boastful. They devised new sins. They disobeyed their parents.

Why should we not say-as some people slanderously assert that we do say-'Let us do evil that good may come'? The condemnation of such men is indeed just!

Amid honor and disrepute, amid slander and praise; regarded as deceivers, yet proved to be true;

Let all bitterness, passion, anger, brawling, and abusive language be banished from among you, as well as all malice.

Now that you have done with all malice, all deceitfulness, insincerity, jealous feelings, and all back-biting,

and keeping your consciences clear, so that, whenever you are maligned, those who vilify your good and Christian conduct may be put to shame.

Let your daily life among the Gentiles be so upright, that, whenever they malign you as evil-doers, they may learn, as they watch, from the uprightness of your conduct, to praise God 'at the time when he shall visit them.'

But they did not find any, although many came forward with false evidence. Later on, however, two men came forward and said:

'He who would enjoy life And see happy days-- let him keep his tongue from evil And his lips from deceitful words,

I tell you that for every careless thing that men say, they must answer on the 'Day of Judgment.'

When a man appears to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue, but imposes upon his own conscience, that man's religious observances are valueless.

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts--murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, perjury, slander.

A good man, from the good stores of his heart, brings out what is good; while a bad man, from his bad stores, brings out what is bad. For what fills a man's heart will rise to his lips.

'He who would enjoy life And see happy days-- let him keep his tongue from evil And his lips from deceitful words,

especially those who, following the promptings of their lower nature, indulge their polluting passions and despise all control. Audacious and self-willed, they feel no awe of the Mighty, maligning them,

Yet in the very same way these men, too, cherishing vain dreams, pollute our human nature, reject control, and malign the Mighty.

Many of them said: "He is possessed by a demon and is mad; why do you listen to him?"

"Are not we right, after all," replied the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan, and are possessed by a demon?"

"Now we are sure that you are possessed by a demon," the Jews replied. "Abraham died, and so did the Prophets; and yet you say 'If any one lays my Message to heart, he will never know death.'

This made the Jews all the more eager to kill him, because not only was he doing away with the Sabbath, but he actually called God his own Father--putting himself on an equality with God.

"You heard his blasphemy? What is your verdict?" They all condemned him, declaring that he deserved death.

Why should we not say-as some people slanderously assert that we do say-'Let us do evil that good may come'? The condemnation of such men is indeed just!

is puffed up with conceit, not really knowing anything, but having a morbid craving for discussions and arguments. Such things only give rise to envy, quarreling, recriminations, base suspicions,

Blessed are you when people taunt you, and persecute you, and say everything evil about you--untruly, and on my account.

Remind your hearers to respect and obey the Powers that be, to be ready for every kind of good work, to speak ill of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be forbearing, and under all circumstances to show a gentle spirit in dealing with others, whoever they may be.

Then they induced some men to assert that they had heard Stephen saying blasphemous things against Moses, and against God;

And have been harbored by Jason! They say that some one else is king--a man called Jesus!"

Then the Chief Priests brought a number of charges against him;

Remind your hearers to respect and obey the Powers that be, to be ready for every kind of good work, to speak ill of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be forbearing, and under all circumstances to show a gentle spirit in dealing with others, whoever they may be.

So, too, that the older women should be reverent in their demeanor, and that they should avoid scandal, and beware of becoming slaves to drink;
