'Great' in the Bible
Now [when they] saw the star, they rejoiced [with] very great joy.
"A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and she did not want to be comforted, because {they exist no longer}."
the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, and the ones who sit in the land and shadow of death, a light has dawned on them."
Rejoice and be glad, because your reward [is] great in heaven, for in the [same] way they persecuted the prophets before you.
Therefore whoever abolishes one of the least of these commandments and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever keeps [them] and teaches [them], this person will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
or by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet, or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king.
But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be dark. Therefore if the light in you is darkness, how great [is] the darkness!
And the rain came down and the rivers came and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it collapsed, and its fall was great."
Now [when] Jesus heard [this], he was astonished, and said to those who were following [him], "Truly I say to you, I have found such great faith with no one in Israel.
And behold, a great storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being inundated by the waves, but he himself was asleep.
And he said to them, "Why are you fearful, [you] of little faith?" Then he got up [and] rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm.
Then Jesus answered [and] said to her, "O woman, your faith [is] great! Let it be done for you as you want." And her daughter was healed from that hour.
And the disciples said to him, "Where in [this] desolate place {can we get} so much bread that such a great crowd could be satisfied?"
It will not be like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
For at that time there will be great tribulation, such as has not happened from the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will happen.
For false messiahs and false prophets will appear, and will produce great signs and wonders in order to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man arriving on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came up [and] rolled away the stone and sat down on it.
And they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, [and] ran to tell his disciples.
And Jesus went away with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd from Galilee followed [him]. And from Judea
and from Jerusalem and from Idumea and the other side of the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon a great crowd came to him [because they] heard all that he was doing.
And a great storm of wind developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already being filled [with water].
And he woke up [and] rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Be quiet! Be silent!" And the wind abated and there was a great calm.
But it is not like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
And [as] he was going out of the temple [courts], one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look! What great stones and what wonderful buildings!"
And Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not [one] stone will be left here on [another] stone that will not be thrown down!"
And then they will see the Son of Man arriving in the clouds with great power and glory.
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he must never drink wine or beer, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit [while he is] still in his mother's womb.
This one will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
because the Mighty [One] has done great [things] for me, and holy [is] his name.
And her neighbors and relatives heard that {the Lord had shown his great mercy to her}, and they rejoiced with her.
And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring good news to you of great joy which will be for all the people:
But in truth I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three years and six months while a great famine took place over all the land.
And Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining for the meal with them.
And he came down with them [and] stood on a level place, and a large crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all of Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast district of Tyre and Sidon,
Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward [is] great in heaven. For their fathers used to do the same [things] to the prophets.
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend expecting back nothing, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
But the one who hears [my words] and does not do [them] is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, which the river burst against, and immediately it collapsed--and the collapse of that house was great!"
And [when] Jesus heard these [things], he marveled at him, and turning around to the crowd that was following him, he said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith!"
And fear seized [them] all, and they began to glorify God, saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us!" and "God has visited to help his people!"
And all the people of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, because they had been seized with great fear. So he got into the boat [and] returned.
and said to them, "Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For the one who is least among you all--this one is great."
And in [addition to] all these [things], a great chasm has been established between us and you, so that those who want to cross over from here to you are not able [to do so], nor can they cross over from there to us.'
There will be great earthquakes and famines and plagues in [various] places. There will be terrible sights and great signs from heaven.
Woe to those {who are pregnant} and to those who are nursing [their babies] in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people,
And then they will see the Son of Man arriving in a cloud with power and great glory.
And a great crowd of the people were following him, and of women who were mourning and lamenting him.
And they worshiped him [and] returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
Now on the last day of the feast--the great [day]--Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let him drink,
both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our [own] languages the great deeds of God!"
The sun will be changed to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
And with great power the apostles were giving testimony [to] the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all.
And [when] Ananias heard these words, he fell down [and] died. And great fear came on all those who heard about [it].
And great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard about these [things].
Now Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.
And a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan and great affliction, and our fathers could not find food.
And Saul was agreeing with his murder. Now there happened on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Now a certain man {named} Simon had been in the city practicing magic and astonishing the people of Samaria, saying he was someone great.
They were all paying attention to {him}, from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is the power of God that is called 'Great.'"
And Simon himself also believed, and [after he] was baptized he was {keeping close company with} Philip. And [when he] saw the signs and great miracles that were taking place, he was astonished.
And one of them {named} Agabus stood up [and] indicated by the Spirit [that] a great famine was about to come over the whole inhabited earth (which took place in the time of Claudius).
So they were sent on their way by the church, [and] passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, telling in detail the conversion of the Gentiles and bringing great joy to all the brothers.
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened and all the bonds were unfastened.
So not only is there a danger this line of business of ours [will] come into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis [will] be regarded as nothing--and [she] is about to be brought down even from her grandeur, [she] whom the whole [of] Asia and the [entire] world worship!"
And [when they] heard [this] and became full of rage, they began to shout, saying, "Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians!"
But [when they] recognized that he was a Jew, they were shouting with one voice from all [of them] for about two hours, "Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians!"
And [when] the city secretary had quieted the crowd, he said, "Ephesian men, for who is there among men who does not know the Ephesian city is honorary temple keeper of the great Artemis and of [her] image fallen from heaven?
So [when] he permitted [him], Paul, standing there on the steps, motioned with [his] hand to the people. And [when there] was a great silence, he addressed [them] in the Aramaic language, saying,
So on the next day, Agrippa and Bernice came with great pageantry and entered into the audience hall, along with military tribunes and the most prominent men of the city. And [when] Festus gave the order, Paul was brought in.
Therefore I have experienced help from God until this day, [and] I stand here testifying to both small and great, saying nothing except what both the prophets and Moses have said were going to happen,
And [as] he was saying these things in his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "You are out of your mind, Paul! [Your] great learning {is driving} you {insane}!"
saying to them, "Men, I perceive that the voyage is going {to end} with disaster and great loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives!"
that my grief is great and [there is] constant distress in my heart.
If we have sown spiritual [things] among you, [is it too] great [a thing] if we reap material [things] from you?
for a great and effective door has opened for me, and [there are] many opponents.
who delivered us from so great [a risk] of death, and will deliver [us], in whom we have put our hope that he will also deliver [us] again,
For out of great distress and anguish of heart I wrote to you through many tears, not so that you may be caused to be sad, but so that you may know the love that I have especially for you.
Great [is] my confidence toward you; great [is] my boasting on your behalf; I am filled with encouragement; I am overflowing with joy in all our affliction.
that with a great ordeal of affliction, the abundance of their joy and the extreme depth of their poverty have overflowed to the wealth of their generosity.
And we are sending with them our brother whom we have tested many times in many [things] that he is diligent, but now much more diligent [because of his] great confidence in you.
Therefore [it is] not a great thing if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love [with] which he loved us,
(This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.)
For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on behalf of you, and those in Laodicea, and all those who have not seen my face {in person},
But [when] we were made orphans by separation from you, brothers, for {a short time} (in face, not in heart), [we were] even more eager with great desire to see your face,
For those who have served well acquire a good standing for themselves, and great boldness in the faith [that is] in Christ Jesus.
And most certainly, great is the mystery of godliness: Who was revealed in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the Gentiles, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
But godliness with contentment is a great means of gain.
Now in a great house [there] are not only gold and silver vessels, but also wooden and earthenware [ones], some of which [are] for honorable use, and some of which [are] for ordinary use.
looking forward to the blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.
Therefore, [although I] have great confidence in Christ to order you [to do what] is proper,
how will we escape [if we] neglect so great a salvation which had [its] beginning [when it] was spoken through the Lord [and] was confirmed to us by those who heard,
Therefore, [because we] have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.
But see how great this man [was], to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth from the spoils!
and [since we have] a great priest over the house of God,
But remember the former days in which, [after you] were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings,
Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has great reward.
Therefore, [since] we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, putting aside every weight and {the sin that so easily ensnares us}, let us run with patient endurance the race that has been set before us,
