'Priests' in the Bible
The residents of Samaria will have anxietyover the calf of Beth-aven.Indeed, its idolatrous priests rejoiced over it;the people will mourn over it,over its glory.It will certainly depart from them.
Grain and drink offerings have been cut offfrom the house of the Lord;the priests, who are ministers of the Lord, mourn.
Dress in sackcloth and lament, you priests;wail, you ministers of the altar.Come and spend the night in sackcloth,you ministers of my God,because grain and drink offeringsare withheld from the house of your God.
Let the priests, the Lord’s ministers,weep between the portico and the altar.Let them say:“Have pity on Your people, Lord,and do not make Your inheritance a disgrace,an object of scorn among the nations.Why should it be said among the peoples,‘Where is their God?’”
Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe,her priests teach for payment,and her prophets practice divination for money.Yet they lean on the Lord, saying,“Isn’t the Lord among us?No disaster will overtake us.”
I will stretch out My hand against Judahand against all the residents of Jerusalem.I will cut off every vestige of Baalfrom this place,the names of the pagan priestsalong with the priests;
Her prophets are reckless—treacherous men.Her priests profane the sanctuary;they do violence to instruction.
“This is what the Lord of Hosts says: Ask the priests for a ruling.
If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?”The priests answered, “No.”
Then Haggai asked, “If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?”The priests answered, “It becomes defiled.”
by asking the priests who were at the house of the Lord of Hosts as well as the prophets, “Should we mourn and fast in the fifth month as we have done these many years?”
“Ask all the people of the land and the priests: When you fasted and lamented in the fifth and in the seventh months for these 70 years, did you really fast for Me?
“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of Me? says Yahweh of Hosts to you priests, who despise My name.”Yet you ask: “How have we despised Your name?”
So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born.
how he entered the house of God, and they ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?
Or haven’t you read in the Law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent?
From then on Jesus began to point out to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.
“Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death.
When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.
The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not lawful to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He didn’t answer.
The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus.
In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him and said,
The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
As they were on their way, some of the guards came into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.

They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes convened.
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they could find none.
As soon as it was morning, the chief priests had a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin. After tying Jesus up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.
And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.
For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed Him over.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.
In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking Him to one another and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself!

saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”
When He saw them, He told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And while they were going, they were healed.
Every day He was teaching in the temple complex. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to destroy Him,
One day as He was teaching the people in the temple complex and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came up
Then the scribes and the chief priests looked for a way to get their hands on Him that very hour, because they knew He had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.
The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death, because they were afraid of the people.
He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police how he could hand Him over to them.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?
When daylight came, the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, convened and brought Him before their Sanhedrin.
Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no grounds for charging this man.”
The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing Him.
Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,
and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him.
This is John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”
The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple police to arrest Him.
Then the temple police came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why haven’t you brought Him?”
So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do since this man does many signs?
The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it so they could arrest Him.
Therefore the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus also
So Judas took a company of soldiers and some temple police from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
“I’m not a Jew, am I?” Pilate replied. “Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”
When the chief priests and the temple police saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”Pilate responded, “Take Him and crucify Him yourselves, for I find no grounds for charging Him.”
But they shouted, “Take Him away! Take Him away! Crucify Him!”Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?”“We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered.
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”
Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,
After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
As the commander of the temple police and the chief priests heard these things, they were baffled about them, as to what could come of this.
So the preaching about God flourished, the number of the disciples in Jerusalem multiplied greatly, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.
And he has authority here from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.”
But all who heard him were astounded and said, “Isn’t this the man who, in Jerusalem, was destroying those who called on this name and then came here for the purpose of taking them as prisoners to the chief priests?”
The next day, since he wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him and instructed the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to convene. Then he brought Paul down and placed him before them. >

Now many have become Levitical priests, since they are prevented by death from remaining in office.
He doesn’t need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do—first for their own sins, then for those of the people. He did this once for all when He offered Himself.
For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak, but the promise of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son, who has been perfected forever.
With these things set up this way, the priests enter the first room repeatedly, performing their ministry.
and made us a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—the glory and dominion are His forever and ever. Amen.
You made them a kingdomand priests to our God,and they will reign on the earth.
Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of the Messiah, and they will reign with Him for 1,000 years.
