“Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job himself.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.

And there was a day when [Job's] sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house [on his birthday],

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself while he sat among the ashes.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

And lifting up their eyes when they were still far off, it did not seem that the man they saw was Job because of the change in him. And they gave way to bitter weeping, with signs of grief, and put dust on their heads.

So they sat down with [Job] on the ground for seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief and pain were very great.

How long will you say these things [Job]? And how long shall the words of your mouth be as a mighty wind?

He will yet fill your mouth with laughter [Job] and your lips with joyful shouting.

[Job continued:] Behold, my eye has seen all this, my ear has heard and understood it.

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered [Job],

For you say, Where is the house of the rich and liberal prince [meaning me]? And where is the tent in which the wicked [Job] dwelt?

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered [Job],

But [you, Job] the man with power possessed the land, and the favored and accepted man dwelt in it.

Haven’t the members of my household said,
“Who is there who has not had enough to eat at Job’s table?”

I would make clear the number of my steps, I would put it before him like a prince! The words of Job are ended.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

But when he saw that the three men could not answer Job, he became angry.

So I say, Listen to me; I also will give you my opinion [about Job's situation] and my knowledge.

Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:

Beware lest you say, We have found wisdom; God thrusts [Job] down [justly], not man [God alone is dealing with him].

Now [Job] has not directed his words against me [therefore I have no cause for irritation], neither will I answer him with speeches like yours. [I speak for truth, not for revenge.]

[Job's friends] are amazed and embarrassed, they answer no more; they have not a thing to say [reports Elihu].

For God [does reveal His will; He] speaks not only once, but more than once, even though men do not regard it [including you, Job].

"If there's a messenger appointed to mediate for Job one out of a thousand to represent the man's integrity on his behalf,

Yes, Job, his eyes constantly watch the behavior of human beings; he carefully observes their every step.

My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.

Elihu spoke further [to Job] and said,

But now, because he hath not visited in his anger, doth not Job know his great arrogancy?

But if you [Job] are filled with the judgment of the wicked, judgment and justice will keep hold on you.

Tell us [Job] with what words of man we may address such a Being; we cannot state our case because we are in the dark [in the presence of the unsearchable God].

Can you [Job] hunt the prey for the lion? Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions

Do you know the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth [their young]? [Or] do you observe when the hinds are giving birth? [Do you attend to all this, Job?]

Will you depend upon him to bring home your seed and gather the grain of your threshing floor? [Who, Job, was the author of this strange variance in the disposition of animals so alike in appearance? Was it you?]

Was it you [Job] who made him to leap like a locust? The majesty of his [snorting] nostrils is terrible.

Is it by your wisdom [Job] that the hawk soars and stretches her wings toward the south [as winter approaches]?

Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low, and tread down the wicked where they stand [if you are so able, Job].

[If you can do all this, Job, proving yourself of divine might] then will I [God] praise you also [and acknowledge that] your own right hand can save you.

He looks all mighty [beasts of prey] in the face [without terror]; he is monarch over all the sons of pride. [And now, Job, who are you who dares not arouse the unmastered crocodile, yet who dares resist Me, the beast's Creator, to My face? Everything under the heavens is Mine; therefore, who can have a claim against God?]

And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.

Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.

So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.

After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.

It is like a man who left his house on a trip to another country. [Before leaving] he put his servants in charge of his affairs, giving each one a [particular] job to do, then he ordered the gatekeeper to stay alert [i.e., while he was gone].

That servant will be happy when his master returns to find him doing [his job] well.

Then the property manager said to himself, What am I going to do since my master is taking away my job? I am not strong enough to dig [i.e., as a farm laborer], and I am too ashamed to beg.

I know what I'll do so that people will welcome me into their homes when I'm dismissed from my job.'

For this world's "wisdom" is foolishness to God. For it is written [Job 5:13], "He [i.e., God] catches wise people in their cleverness."
