In this gospel Christ is more especially presented as the Messiah, the son of Abraham, and son of David. See GOSPELS. The genealogy here starts with Abraham, in contrast with that in Luke, which goes back to Adam because in that gospel the Lord is viewed as connected with man, i.e., the seed of the woman. Here we read, He "shall save his people from their sins," and in this gospel only is quoted the prophetic name IMMANUEL, 'God with us.' Here only is the account given of the Magi inquiring for the 'King of the Jews,' with the flight into Egypt, and the massacre of the infants. (The Magi did not come 'when Jesus was born' Mt 2:1 but several months afterwards. It is better translated 'Jesus having been born.') Christ is called out of Egypt, taking part thus in the history of Israel, God's first-born son. Ex 4:22. The Messiah being rejected, the remnant comes into weeping. Mt 2:17-18.
Matt. 3, Matt. 4. The remnant are separated by the preaching of John. Messiah takes His place with them in Jordan according to divine order. His Person is attested by a voice from heaven, and the full revelation of God in connection with the Son upon earth. Led of the Spirit, He overcomes Satan, and then calls the remnant around Himself.

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not from the beginning of the world to this time, nor shall be. Yea, and except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: But for the chosens' sake, those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, 'Lo, here is Christ,' or 'There is Christ': believe it not: for there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets and shall do great miracles and wonders. Insomuch that if it were possible, even the very elect should be deceived. Take heed: I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, 'Behold, he is in the desert,' go not forth: 'Lo, he is in the secret places,' believe not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth unto the west: so shall the coming of the son of man be. For wheresoever a dead carcass is, even thither will the eagles resort.
Therefore be ye also ready, for in the hour ye think least on, in the same ye think he would not: will the son of man come. If there be any faithful servant and wise, whom his master hath made ruler over his household, for to give them meat in season convenient; read more. Happy is that servant: whom his master, when he cometh, shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, he shall make him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, my master will defer his coming, and begin to smite his fellows: yea and to eat and to drink with the drunken: that servant's master will come in a day when he looketh not for him: and in a hour that he is not aware of, and will divide him, and give him his reward with hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went to meet the bridegroom: five of them were foolish, and five were wise. read more. The foolish took their lamps, but took none oil with them. But the wise took oil with them in their vessels with their lamps also. While the bridegroom tarried, all slumbered and slept. And even at midnight, there was a cry made, 'Behold, the bridegroom cometh, go out against him.' Then all those virgins arose, and prepared their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us of your oil, for our lamps go out.' But the wise answered, saying, 'Not so, lest there be not enough for us and you, but go rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.' And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready, went in with him to the wedding, and the gate was shut up. Afterwards came also the other virgins, saying, 'Master, master open to us.' But he answered, and said, 'Verily I say unto you: I know you not.' Look that ye watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor yet the hour, when the son of man shall come. "Likewise, as a certain man, ready to take his journey to a strange country, called his servants to him, and delivered to them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one: to every man after his ability, and straightway departed. Then he that had received the five talents, went and bestowed them, and won other five talents. Likewise, he that received two gained other two. But he that received the one, went and digged a pit in the earth and hid his master's money. After a long season, the Lord of those servants came, and reckoned with them. Then came he that had received five talents, and brought other five talents saying, 'Master, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: Behold, I have gained with them five talents more.' Then his master said unto him, 'Well, good servant and faithful; Thou hast been faithful in little, I will make thee ruler over much: enter in into thy master's joy.' Also, he that received two talents came, and said, 'Master, thou deliveredest unto me two talents: Behold, I have won two other talents with them.' And his master said unto him, 'Well, good servant and faithful; Thou hast been faithful in little, I will make thee ruler over much: go in into thy master's joy.' Then he which had received the one talent came also, and said, 'Master, I considered that thou wast a hard man, which reapest where thou sowedst not, and gatherest where thou strawedst not, and was therefore afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: Behold, thou hast thine own.' His master answered, and said unto him, 'Thou evil servant and slothful, thou knowest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I strawed not: Thou oughtest therefore to have had my money to the changers, and then at my coming should I have received my mine own with vantage. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every man that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance. And from him that hath not, shall be taken away, even that he hath. And cast that unprofitable servant into utter darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' "When the son of man shall cometh in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his glory and before him shall be gathered all nations. And he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth the sheep from the goats. And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, and the goats on the left hand. Then shall the King say to them on his right hand, 'Come, ye blessed children of my father, inherit ye the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. For I was a hungered, and ye gave me meat. I thirsted, and ye gave me drink. I was harborless, and ye lodged me. I was naked and ye clothed me. I was sick and ye visited me. I was in prison and ye came unto me.' Then shall the righteous answer him saying, 'Master, when saw we thee a hungered, and fed thee? Or athirst, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee harborless, and lodged thee? Or naked and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison and came unto thee?' And the King shall answer and say unto them, 'Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me.' Then shall the King say unto them that shall be on the left hand, 'Depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, which is prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was a hungered, and ye gave me no meat. I thirsted, and ye gave me no drink. I was harborless, and ye lodged me not. I was naked, and ye clothed me not. I was sick and in prison, and ye visited me not.' Then shall they also answer him, saying, 'Master, when saw we thee a hungered, or athirst, or harborless, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and have not ministered unto thee?' Then shall he answer them, and say, 'Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.' And these shall go into everlasting pain: And the righteous into life eternal.
And so all Israel shall be saved. As it is written, "There shall come out of Zion he that doth deliver, and shall turn away the ungodliness of Jacob.
