“Your name will no longer be Jacob,”
And he set up an altar there and called it “God, the God of Israel.”
Jacob’s sons returned from the field when they heard about the incident and were deeply grieved and angry. For Shechem had committed an outrage against Israel by raping Jacob’s daughter,
God said to him:
you will no longer be named Jacob,
but your name will be Israel.
So He named him Israel.
Israel set out again and pitched his tent beyond the Tower of Eder.

Jacob had 12 sons:

Then Joseph took them both—with his right hand Ephraim toward Israel’s left, and with his left hand Manasseh toward Israel’s right—and brought them to Israel.
But Israel stretched out his right hand and put it on the head of Ephraim, the younger, and crossing his hands, put his left on Manasseh’s head, although Manasseh was the firstborn.
So he blessed them that day with these words:
“May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh,”
putting Ephraim before Manasseh.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you back to the land of your fathers.

These are the tribes of Israel, 12 in all, and this was what their father said to them. He blessed them, and he blessed each one with a suitable blessing.
He commanded his servants who were physicians to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel.

These are the heads of their fathers’ families:
Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.
These are the clans of Reuben.
But the Lord will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all that the Israelites own will die.”
But against all the Israelites, whether man or beast, not even a dog will snarl,
Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month they must each select an animal of the flock according to their fathers’ households, one animal per household.

Moses’ father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian,
Moses recounted to his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that confronted them on the way, and how the Lord delivered them.
Jethro rejoiced over all the good things the Lord had done for Israel when He rescued them from the power of the Egyptians.

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law in God’s presence.
So Moses chose able men from all Israel and made them leaders over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
After they departed from Rephidim, they entered the Wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness, and Israel camped there in front of the mountain.

“Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of Israel’s sons:
Engrave the two stones with the names of Israel’s sons as a gem cutter engraves a seal. Mount them, surrounded with gold filigree settings.
The 12 stones are to correspond to the names of Israel’s sons. Each stone must be engraved like a seal, with one of the names of the 12 tribes.
“Whenever he enters the sanctuary, Aaron is to carry the names of Israel’s sons over his heart on the breastpiece for decisions, as a continual reminder before the Lord.
He took the gold from their hands, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it into an image of a calf.

These are the men called from the community; they are leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of Israel’s clans.”
The descendants of Reuben,
These are the men Moses and Aaron registered, with the assistance of the 12 leaders of Israel; each represented his ancestral house.
So all the Israelites 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in Israel’s army, were registered by their ancestral houses.
