Now Jesus began telling a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how they had been selecting the places of honor at the table, saying to them,
Now all the tax collectors and sinners [including non-observant Jews] were coming near Jesus to listen to Him.
Now Jesus was also saying to the disciples,
Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were sneering and ridiculing Him.
When He saw them, He said to them,
He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves and were confident that they were righteous [posing outwardly as upright and in right standing with God], and who viewed others with contempt:
Now they were also bringing their babies to Him, so that He would touch and bless them, and when the disciples noticed it, they began reprimanding them.
But the disciples understood none of these things [about the approaching death and resurrection of Jesus]. This statement was hidden from them, and they did not grasp the [meaning of the] things that were said [by Jesus].
Those who were leading the way were sternly telling him to keep quiet; but he screamed all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they assumed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately [as soon as He reached the city].
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
Jesus went into the temple [enclosure] and began driving out those who were selling,
He was teaching day after day in the temple [porches and courts]; but the chief priests and scribes and the leading men among the people were seeking [a way] to put Him to death,
The scribes and the chief priests tried to [find a way to] arrest Him at that very hour, but they were afraid of the people; because they understood that He spoke this parable against them.
They were not able to seize on anything He said in the presence of the people; and being unnerved at His reply, they were silent.
Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless.

The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people [who listened devotedly to His teaching, and who respected His spiritual wisdom].
When those who were around Him saw what was about to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?”

And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.
While they were talking and discussing it, Jesus Himself came up and began walking with them.
But their eyes were [miraculously] prevented from recognizing Him.
But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel and set our nation free. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.
And also some of the women among us shocked us. They were at the tomb early in the morning,
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women had said, but they did not see Him.”
Then they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as if He were going farther.
Then their eyes were [suddenly] opened [by God] and they [clearly] recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.
They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and opening the Scriptures to us?”
They got up that very hour and went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven [apostles] gathered together and those who were with them,
While they were talking about this, Jesus Himself [suddenly] stood among them and said to them,
All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being.
He came to that which was His own [that which belonged to Him—His world, His creation, His possession], and those who were His own [people—the Jewish nation] did not receive and welcome Him.
For out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favor upon favor, and gift heaped upon gift].
Nathanael said to Jesus, “How do You know [these things about] me?” Jesus answered,
