Now the Pharisees who loved money listened to all this and they jeered at him.
"Every man who divorces his wife and marries some one else, commits adultery; and he who marries one who is put away by her husband commits adultery.
"Now there was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and made merry every day in splendor.
"But besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who want to cross from here to you cannot, nor can those who would cross from you to us.'
Jesus said to his disciples. "It is not possible but that occasions of stumbling should occur, but woe to him through whom they come!
"But who of you who has a slave plowing or keeping sheep, will say to him, when he is come in from the field, 'Come at once, sit down to dinner,'
"There was a certain town," he said, "a judge who had neither reverence for God, nor respect for man.
"In that same town there was a widow who came again and again before him, saying, "'Do for me the justice of my adversary.'
"And will not God see justice done to his elect who are crying unto him day and night, even if he seems to delay helping them?
Moreover he spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves because they were righteous, and looked down upon the rest.
"I tell you that this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one who exalts himself shall be humbled; but he who humbles himself shall be exalted."
Jesus looked at him and said: "How hard it is for those who have money to enter into the kingdom of God!
And he said to them, "In Solemn truth I tell you that there is no one who, for the sake of the kingdom of God, has left houses, or wife, or brother, or parents, or children,
"who shall not certainly receive many times as much in this time, and in the age to come eternal."
As Jesus drew near to Jericho, there was a blind man who sat by the wayside begging.
Those who went ahead began to reprove him and to tell him to be still; but he kept clamorously shouting all the more, "Son of David, take pity on me!"
Instantly he regained his sight and followed Jesus, giving glory to God; and all the people who saw it gave praise to God.
There was a man there, called Zaccheus, who was a chief of the tax-gatherers, and was wealthy.
When they all saw it, they began to complain, saying "He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner."
"And upon his return after he had secured the royal power, he ordered the slaves to whom he had given the money to be called in, so that he might know what they had gained by trading.
"Then to those who stood by, he said, 'Take the pounds from him and give it to him who has ten pounds.'
"'I tell you that to every one who has it shall be given; and from him who has not shall be taken away even what he has.
"'Howbeit these enemies of mine who were not willing for me to become their King, bring them here, and slay them in my presence.'"
Then those who were sent out and found it as he had told them.
They cried, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in Heaven and glory in the Highest"
They spoke to him saying. "Tell us by what authority you are doing these things? Who is it that gave you this authority?"
Then he began to tell the people this parable. "There was a man who planted a vineyard, and let it out to vine-dressers, and went to another country for a long time.
"Every one who falls on that stone will be broken in pieces; but whoever it falls upon will be scattered as dust."
So they watched him, and sent spies who pretended to be honest men, in order to seize on his speech, and to deliver him up to authority and jurisdiction of the governor.
Next came some of the Sadducees who deny that there is resurrection, and they asked him.
"but those who are counted worthy to reach that world and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.
"Beware of the Scribes who like to walk about in long robes, and dote on salutations in the marketplaces, and on securing the front seats in the synagogues and the best places at banquets;
And to some who were about the Temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones votive offerings, he said,
"Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let those who are in the country enter not in.
"Woe to women with child and to those who are nursing infants in those days! For sore anguish will come upon the land, and wrath upon all his people.
Satan however, entered into Judas (the man called Iscariot), who was one of the twelve.
"The Son of man indeed goes on his way, as it has been determined; but woe to that man by who he is betrayed."
And they began to question among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do such a thing.
and he said to them. "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have who have authority over them are called Benefactors.
"But you shall not be so. But he who is greater among you let him become like the younger; and he who is leader like him who serves.
"For which is greater, he who sits at table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at table? But I am in your midst as one who serves.
"You, however, are those who have stood by me in my trials.
Then he said to them. "But now let him who has a purse take it, and he who has a wallet, let him the do the same. And he who has no sword, let him sell his cloak and buy one.
While he was still speaking there came a crowd, and he who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus in order to kiss him,
Those who were around him, when they saw what was about to happen, said to him, "Lord, shall we strike with our swords?"
Then Jesus said to the corps of priests and captains of the temple and elders who had come out to arrest him. "Have ye come for me with swords and clubs to arrest me like a robber?
Meanwhile the men who were holding Jesus in custody kept mocking and striking him.
They would blindfold him and ask him. "Prophesy! Tell who struck you!"
and when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction he sent him to Herod, who himself happened to be in Jerusalem during those days.
and said to them. "You brought before me this man as one who incited the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence, and I find no fault in this man regarding the charges that you brought against him.
(This was a man who had been thrown in prison on account of a riot which had occurred in the city, and for murder.)
He released the man who had been put in prison for riot and murder, the man whom they asked for; but Jesus he handed over to their will.
And when they led him away they took hold of Simon, a Cyrenean, who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry it behind Jesus.
He was also followed by a great crowd of people, and of women too, who were beating their breast and lamenting him.
And one of the criminals who had been hung there kept reviling him, saying. "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us."
And all the crowds who had assembled to see this spectacle, after witnessing what had been done, were returning beating upon their breast.
But all his acquaintances and the women who had been his followers continued to stand at a distance, looking on.
he who came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and who was on the watch for the kingdom of God. He had not concurred in the designs and deed of the council.
Then the women who had accompanied him out of Galilee followed after, and noted the tomb, and how his body was placed.
They were terrified, and bowed down their faces to the ground, but the men said to them. "Why are you seeking him who lives among the dead?
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James, and the rest of the women who were telling all this to the apostles.
"What kind of things?" he answered. And they said: "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;
"But we were hoping that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this is the third day since these things happened.
"and found that his body was not there; then they came and told us that besides they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
But to all who receive him, to them he has given the right to become children of God, even to those who trust in his name;
who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John bore witness concerning him, and cried aloud, saying, "This is he of whom I said, 'He who is coming after me has been put before me, for he was before me.'"
No man has ever seen God; God, only begotten, who is in the bosom of the Father??e has interpreted him.
Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent some priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
Then said they to him. "Who are you? That we may give some answer to those who sent us. What account do you give of yourself?"
He said, "I am a voice of one who cries aloud in the desert, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as said the prophet Isaiah."
Now it was some of the Pharisees who had been sent to him;
"I indeed am baptizing in water," John said in reply, "but in your midst stands One whom you do not recognize,
One who is to come after me, whose sandal-strap I am not worthy to untie."
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said: "Behold, that is God's Lamb, who takes and bears away the sin of the world.
This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes One who has been put before me, for he was before me.'
And I did not recognize him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and resting upon him, is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'
One of the two men who heard what John said and followed Jesus, was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.
Then Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found him about whom Moses wrote in the Law, as did the prophets??esus of Nazareth, Joseph's son."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, and said, "Behold a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit."
So they carried it. And when the master of the feast had tasted of the water which had been made wine, not knowing where it came from, though the attendants who had drawn it knew, he called the bridegroom and said to him.
There he found in the temple those who were selling cattle and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting there.
and said to those who were selling doves. "Take these things away! Make not my Father's house a house of trade!
The wind blows where it wills, and you hear its voice, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with every one who has been born of the Spirit."
There is no one gone up to heaven, except the One who came down from heaven??he Son of man himself.
in order that every one who believes in him may have eternal life.
He who trusts in him is not condemned, but he who does not trust has already been condemned, because he has not put his trust in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
For every one who practices wrong hates light, and does not come to the light, lest his actions be exposed;
but he who does what is true, comes to the light, in order that his actions may be shown to have been wrought in God."
"Rabbi, see! The man who was with you on the other side of Jordan, and to whom you yourself have borne testimony, is now baptizing, and everybody is coming to him."
He who has the bride is the bridegroom, but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. So then this joy of mine has now complete fulfilment.

"How is it," answered the Samaritan woman, "that you who are a Jew ask a drink from me, a woman, and a Samaritan?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
"If you had known the free gift of God," Jesus answered, "and who it is that says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water."
Surely you are not greater than our Father Jacob, who gave us the well, and used to drink from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle, too?"
"All who drink of this water," Jesus answered, "will thirst again;
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
