'Down' in the Bible
He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,both man and beast.
He struck down many nationsand slaughtered mighty kings:
By the rivers of Babylon—there we sat down and weptwhen we remembered Zion.
Remember, Lord, what the Edomites saidthat day at Jerusalem:“Destroy it! Destroy itdown to its foundations!”
I will bow down toward Your holy templeand give thanks to Your namefor Your constant love and truth.You have exalted Your nameand Your promise above everything else.
You know when I sit down and when I stand up;You understand my thoughts from far away.
Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.Let evil relentlessly hunt down a violent man.
Answer me quickly, Lord;my spirit fails.Don’t hide Your face from me,or I will be like thosegoing down to the Pit.
Lord, part Your heavens and come down.Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.
Reach down from heaven;rescue me from deep water, and set me freefrom the grasp of foreigners
Let’s swallow them alive, like Sheol,still healthy as they go down to the Pit.
for her house sinks down to deathand her ways to the land of the departed spirits.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant.
Her feet go down to death;her steps head straight for Sheol.
When you walk here and there, they will guide you;when you lie down, they will watch over you;when you wake up, they will talk to you.
Crossing the street near her corner,he strolled down the road to her house
For she has brought many down to death;her victims are countless.
A city is built up by the blessing of the upright,but it is torn down by the mouth of the wicked.
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down,but a good word cheers it up.
Every wise woman builds her house,but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands.
The wicked one is thrown down by his own sin,but the righteous one has a refuge in his death.
For the discerning the path of life leads upward,so that he may avoid going down to Sheol.
A gossip’s words are like choice foodthat goes down to one’s innermost being.
A wise person went up against a city of warriorsand brought down its secure fortress.
When you sit down to dine with a ruler,consider carefully what is before you,
Don’t gaze at wine because it is red,when it gleams in the cupand goes down smoothly.
You’ll be like someone sleeping out at seaor lying down on the top of a ship’s mast.
otherwise, the one who hears will disgrace you,and you’ll never live it down.
A man who does not control his temperis like a city whose wall is broken down. >
Without wood, fire goes out;without a gossip, conflict dies down.
A gossip’s words are like choice foodthat goes down to one’s innermost being.
Who has gone up to heaven and come down?Who has gathered the wind in His hands?Who has bound up the waters in a cloak?Who has established all the ends of the earth?What is His name,and what is the name of His Son—if you know?
a time to kill and a time to heal;a time to tear down and a time to build;
Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm?

Now I will tell youwhat I am about to do to My vineyard:I will remove its hedge,and it will be consumed;I will tear down its wall,and it will be trampled.
Therefore Sheol enlarges its throatand opens wide its enormous jaws,and down go Zion’s dignitaries, her masses,her crowds, and those who carouse in her!
Say to him: Calm down and be quiet. Don’t be afraid or cowardly because of these two smoldering stubs of firebrands, the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram, and the son of Remaliah.
“The bricks have fallen,but we will rebuild with cut stones;the sycamores have been cut down,but we will replace them with cedars.”
I will send him against a godless nation;I will command him to goagainst a people destined for My rage,to take spoils, to plunder,and to trample them down like clay in the streets.
Look, the Lord God of Hostswill chop off the branches with terrifying power,and the tall trees will be cut down,the high trees felled.
The wolf will live with the lamb,and the leopard will lie down with the goat.The calf, the young lion, and the fatling will be together,and a child will lead them.
The cow and the bear will graze,their young ones will lie down together,and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
But they will swoop downon the Philistine flank to the west.Together they will plunder the people of the east.They will extend their power over Edom and Moab,and the Ammonites will be their subjects.
But desert creatures will lie down there,and owls will fill the houses.Ostriches will dwell there,and wild goats will leap about.
you will sing this song of contempt about the king of Babylon and say:How the oppressor has quieted down,and how the raging has become quiet!
Your splendor has been brought down to Sheol,along with the music of your harps.Maggots are spread out under you,and worms cover you.”
Shining morning star,how you have fallen from the heavens!You destroyer of nations,you have been cut down to the ground.
But you will be brought down to Sheolinto the deepest regions of the Pit.
I will break Assyria in My land;I will tread him down on My mountain.Then his yoke will be taken from them,and his burden will be removed from their shoulders.
Then the firstborn of the poor will be well fed,and the impoverished will lie down in safety,but I will kill your root with hunger,and your remnant will be slain.
In its streets they wear sackcloth;on its rooftops and in its public squares everyone wails,falling down and weeping.
The cities of Aroer are forsaken;they will be places for flocks.They will lie down without fear.
You counted the houses of Jerusalem so that you could tear them down to fortify the wall.
The earth staggers like a drunkardand sways like a hut.Earth’s rebellion weighs it down,and it falls, never to rise again.

For He has humbled those who live in lofty places—an inaccessible city.He brings it down; He brings it down to the ground;He throws it to the dust.
You will be brought down;you will speak from the ground,and your words will come from low in the dust.Your voice will be like that of a spirit from the ground;your speech will whisper from the dust.
They set out to go down to Egyptwithout asking My advice,in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protectionand take refuge in Egypt’s shadow.

The peoples will be burned to ashes,like thorns cut down and burned in a fire.
When My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,it will then come down on Edomand on the people I have set apart for destruction.
The wild oxen will be struck down with them,and young bulls with the mighty bulls.Their land will be soaked with blood,and their soil will be saturated with fat.

But I know your sitting down,your going out and your coming in,and your raging against Me.

He cuts down cedars for his use,or he takes a cypress or an oak.He lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest.He plants a laurel, and the rain makes it grow.
It serves as fuel for man.He takes some of it and warms himself;also he kindles a fire and bakes bread;he even makes it into a god and worships it;he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.
He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it.He bows down to it and worships;He prays to it, “Save me, for you are my god.”
No one reflects,no one has the perception or insight to say,“I burned half of it in the fire,I also baked bread on its coals,I roasted meat and ate.I will make something detestable with the rest of it,and I will bow down to a block of wood.”
This is what the Lord says:The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cushand the Sabeans, men of stature,will come over to youand will be yours;they will follow you,they will come over in chainsand bow down to you.They will confess to you:God is indeed with you, and there is no other;there is no other God.
Those who pour out their bags of goldand weigh out silver on scales—they hire a goldsmith and he makes it into a god.Then they kneel and bow down to it.
“Go down and sit in the dust,Virgin Daughter Babylon.Sit on the ground without a throne,Daughter Chaldea!For you will no longer be called pampered and spoiled.
This is what the Lord,the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, saysto one who is despised,to one abhorred by people,to a servant of rulers:“Kings will see and stand up,and princes will bow down,because of the Lord, who is faithful,the Holy One of Israel—and He has chosen you.”
Kings will be your foster fathers,and their queens your nursing mothers.They will bow down to youwith their faces to the ground,and lick the dust at your feet.Then you will know that I am Yahweh;those who put their hope in Mewill not be put to shame.
Look, all you who kindle a fire,who encircle yourselves with firebrands;walk in the light of your fireand in the firebrands you have lit!This is what you’ll get from My hand:you will lie down in a place of torment.
I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,who said to you:Lie down, so we can walk over you.You made your back like the ground,and like a street for those who walk on it. >
For this is what the Lord God says:“At first My people went down to Egypt to live there,then Assyria oppressed them without cause.
Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses,and He carried our pains;but we in turn regarded Him stricken,struck down by God, and afflicted.
Israel’s watchmen are blind, all of them,they know nothing;all of them are mute dogs,they cannot bark;they dream, lie down,and love to sleep.
You went to the king with oiland multiplied your perfumes;you sent your couriers far awayand sent them down even to Sheol.
The sons of your oppressorswill come and bow down to you;all who reviled youwill fall facedown at your feet.They will call you the City of the Lord,Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
Like cattle that go down into the valley,the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.You led Your people this wayto make a glorious name for Yourself.
Look down from heaven and seefrom Your lofty home—holy and beautiful.Where is Your zeal and Your might?Your yearning and Your compassionare withheld from me.
Your holy people had a possessionfor a little while,but our enemies have trampled downYour sanctuary.
If only You would tear the heavens openand come down,so that mountains would quake at Your presence—
When You did awesome worksthat we did not expect,You came down,and the mountains quaked at Your presence.
