To Simon, He gave the name Peter;

He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, James’s brother.

He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transformed in front of them,

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—

And if your hand causes your downfall, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and go to hell—the unquenchable fire,

And if your foot causes your downfall, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell— [the unquenchable fire,

And if your eye causes your downfall, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

Peter began to tell Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”

Then Peter remembered and said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that You cursed is withered.”

While He was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple complex, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately,

And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him silver. So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him.

While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “I assure you: One of you will betray Me—one who is eating with Me!”

For the Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Peter told Him, “Even if everyone runs away, I will certainly not!”

He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified.

Then He came and found them sleeping. “Simon, are you sleeping?” He asked Peter. “Couldn’t you stay awake one hour?

Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police, warming himself by the fire.

While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s servants came.

When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus.”

But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean!”

Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” When he thought about it, he began to weep.

But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there just as He told you.’”
