[This is] a record of the family background of Jesus Christ, the descendant of David, who was the descendant of Abraham. [Note: The following is an incomplete lineage through Jesus' step-father Joseph].
Abraham was the father of Isaac; Isaac was the father of Jacob; Jacob, of Judah and his brethren;
Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar; Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Aram,
Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon.
Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab; Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth; Obed the father of Jesse,
And Jesse, of David the king. David (by Uriah's widow), was the father of Solomon;
Solomon was the father of Roboam, Roboam the father of Abia, Abia the father of Asa.
Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of
Uzziah was the father of
Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of
and after their transmigration to Babylon, Jechonias was father of Salathiel, Salathiel father of Zorobabel.
Zerubbabel was the father of
Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud.
Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob.
and Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary by whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ occurred in this way. His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, [but] before they came together, she was found {to be pregnant} by the Holy Spirit.
But Joseph her husband, because he was just a man and unwilling to disgrace her, was minded to put her away secretly.
But [as] he was considering these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Now all this happened in order that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,
Now [after] Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
and asked, "Where is the one who was born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
And [when] King Herod heard [it], he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him,
and [after] calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired from them where the Christ was to be born.
They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, because that is what was written by the prophet:
Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing;
[After] they listened to the king, they went out, and behold, the star which they had seen at its rising led them until it came [and] stood above [the place] where the child was.
And it was made clear to them by God in a dream that they were not to go back to Herod; so they went into their country by another way.
So
And he was there until the death of Herod, in order that what was said by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi.
Then what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying,
"A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and she did not want to be comforted, because {they exist no longer}."
But, when Herod was, dead, lo! a messenger of the Lord, appeareth by dream unto Joseph in Egypt;
But [when he] heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream, he took refuge in the regions of Galilee.
And he came [and] lived in a town called Nazareth, in order that what was said by the prophets would be fulfilled: "He will be called a Nazarene."
For this is the one who was spoken about by the prophet Isaiah, saying, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'"
Now John himself had his clothing made from camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Then Jerusalem
and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
But when John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he told them, "You children of serpents! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
His winnowing shovel [Note: This was a process whereby grain was tossed into the air so that the wind could blow the husks away, leaving only good grain on the ground] is in His hand and He will completely clear off His threshing floor [by removing all of the husks]. And He will gather His wheat into the barn, but will burn up the husks with a fire that will never go out."
At that very time Jesus was on his way from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him.
but John was forbidding him, saying, 'I have need by thee to be baptized -- and thou dost come unto me!'
Now [after he] was baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the water, and behold, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove coming upon him.
And behold, [there was] a voice from heaven saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil,
and [after he] had fasted forty days and forty nights, then he was hungry.
But having heard that John was delivered up, he departed into Galilee:
and, forsaking Nazareth, he came and fixed his dwelling in Capernaum, which was by the lake, - within the bounds of Zebulun and Naphtali:
in order that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled, who said,
The people that was sitting in darkness, a great light, beheld, - and, on them who were sitting in land and shade of death, Light rose on them.
Now [as he] was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, throwing a casting net into the sea (for they were fishermen).
And as He was going on from that point, He saw two others, brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, getting their nets in order; and He called them.
And Jesus was going round throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the glad-message of the kingdom, - and curing every disease, and every infirmity, among the people.
His fame spread throughout Syria, and people brought to him everyone who was sick those afflicted with various diseases and pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralyzed and he healed them.
And he was followed by large crowds from Galilee, the district of the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
and having opened his mouth, he was teaching them, saying:
"Rejoice and exult in it, because your reward was great in the heavens; for so did they persecute the prophets before you.
"You people are [like] salt on the earth. But if salt loses its flavoring ability, how will it ever get it back again? From then on it would be good for nothing except to be thrown out onto the roadway and walked on by people. [Note: This was mined salt which, when losing its "saltiness" due to exposure to the sun or rain, was simply disposed of by being dumped onto the roadway where people walked].
"You have heard that it was said to the {people of old}, 'Do not commit murder,' and 'whoever commits murder will be subject to judgment.'
"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'
"And it was said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'
"Again you have heard that it was said to the {people of old}, 'Do not swear falsely, but fulfill your oaths to the Lord.'
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor' and 'Hate your enemy.'
But [when] you are fasting, {put olive oil on your head} and wash your face
but I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed like one of these.
Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, was it not in your name that we prophesied, and in your name that we drove out demons, and in your name that we did many wonder-works?'
And the rain came down and the rivers came and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it did not collapse, because its foundation was laid on the rock.

When Jesus had closed this address, the result was that the crowds were dumbfounded at His teaching,
because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.
When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
and lo, a leper having come, was bowing to him, saying, 'Sir, if thou art willing, thou art able to cleanse me;'
And extending his hand he touched him, saying, "I am willing, be clean." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
And Jesus said to him, See that you say nothing about this to anyone; but go and let the priest see you and make the offering which was ordered by Moses, for a witness to them.
And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
Now [when] Jesus heard [this], he was astonished, and said to those who were following [him], "Truly I say to you, I have found such great faith with no one in Israel.
And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go, as you have believed it will be done for you." And the slave was healed at that hour.
And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.
and he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose, and was ministering to them.
Now [when it] was evening, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed, and he expelled the spirits with a word. And he healed all {those who were sick},
in order that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled, who said, "He himself took away our sicknesses, and carried away our diseases."
"Master," said another, who was a disciple, "let me first go and bury my father."
And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
And behold, a great storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being inundated by the waves, but he himself was asleep.
But he was asleep. And they came and woke him, saying. "Lord save us! We are drowning!"
And he said to them, "Why are you fearful, [you] of little faith?" Then he got up [and] rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm.
And [when] he came to the other side, to the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from among the tombs met him, very violent, so that no one was able to pass by along that road.
Now a long way from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
And he said unto them, "Go your ways." Then went they out, and departed into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine was carried with violence headlong into the sea, and perished in the water.
And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.
And lo! they brought to him a man that was palsied, lying on a bed. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the palsied man, Be of good cheer, son; thy sins are forgiven.
And Jesus, having knowledge of what was in their minds, said, Why are your thoughts evil?
only it was fit you should know that the son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins: arise, then, said he, to the paralytic, take up thy bed, and march home.
And [as] Jesus was going away from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth and said to him, "Follow me!" And he stood up [and] followed him.
And it happened [as] he {was dining} in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners were coming [and] {dining} with Jesus and his disciples.
No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth onto an old garment; for what was intended to cover up [the hole] actually tears away [part of] the garment [i.e., when it shrinks], causing a bigger hole.
[As] he was saying these [things] to them, behold, one of the rulers came [and] knelt down before him, saying, "My daughter has just now died, but come, place your hand on her and she will live!"
