{A Psalm of David.} Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.


Draw also the spear and javelin to meet those who pursue me.
Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.”


For without cause they hid their net for me;
Without cause they dug a pit [of destruction] for my life.

Then I will rejoice in the Lord and be happy because of his deliverance.

All of my bones shall say, "O Yahweh, who [is] like you, who delivers [the] poor from [one] stronger than he and [the] poor and needy from [the one who] robs him?"

But as for me, when they were ill I put on the clothing of sorrow: I went without food and was sad, and my prayer came back again to my heart.

But they took pleasure in my trouble, and came together, yes, low persons came together against me without my knowledge; they never came to an end of wounding me.


Like godless jesters at a feast,
They gnashed at me with their teeth [in malice].

My Lord! how long wilt thou look on? Bring back my soul out of their raging, from among lions, my solitary self.

I will thank thee, in the midst of a great convocation, - In the midst of a mighty people, will I praise thee.

Do not let my haters be glad over me falsely; let not those who are against me without cause make sport of me.

Thou sawest, O Jehovah: thou wilt not be silent: O Jehovah, thou wilt not remove far off from me.

Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.

{To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD.} The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.

For it flatters him in his own eyes
Concerning the discovery of his iniquity and the hatred of it.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.


He will make your righteousness [your pursuit of right standing with God] like the light,
And your judgment like [the shining of] the noonday [sun].

Put an end to your wrath and be no longer bitter; do not give way to angry feeling which is a cause of sin.

The sinner has evil designs against the upright, lifting up the voice of wrath against him.


The Lord laughs at him [the wicked one—the one who oppresses the righteous],
For He sees that his day [of defeat] is coming.

The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.


The sword [of the ungodly] will enter their own heart,
And their bow will be broken.

The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.

But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.

Even if he has a fall he will not be without help: for the hand of the Lord is supporting him.

But the Lord does not surrender the godly, or allow them to be condemned in a court of law.

But he came to an end, and there was no sign of him; I made a search for him and he was not there.

And the Lord will be their help, and keep them safe: he will take them out of the hands of the evil-doers, and be their saviour, because they had faith in him.

{A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.} O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.


For my iniquities have gone over my head [like the waves of a flood];
As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.

My stripes became loathsome: they flowed from the face of my folly.

For my loins are full of burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.

They also that sought after my life laid snares for me; and they that went about to do me evil talked of wickedness, and imagined deceit all the day long.

I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense.

When I said, 'Lest they rejoice over me, In the slipping of my foot against me they magnified themselves.

Indeed, I am being set up for a fall, and I am continuously reminded of my pain.

And they requiting evil for good will be mine adversaries, for my pursuing Thou Thou wilt not forsake me, O Jehovah: my God, thou wilt not remove far off from me.

{To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.} I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.

I made no sound, I said no word, even of good; and I was moved with sorrow.

My heart was hot in the midst of me; in my heat the fire will burn: I spake with my tongue.


“Behold, You have made my days as [short as] hand widths,
And my lifetime is as nothing in Your sight.
Surely every man at his best is a mere breath [a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes]! Selah.

Truly, every man goes on his way like an image; he is troubled for no purpose: he makes a great store of wealth, and has no knowledge of who will get it.

I am speechless; I do not open my mouth
because of what You have done.


“With rebukes You discipline man for sin;
You consume like a moth what is precious to him;
Surely every man is a mere breath [a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes]. Selah.

Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

You had no desire for offerings of beasts or fruits of the earth; ears you made for me: for burned offerings and sin offerings you made no request.
