many of the people therefore, who heard this discourse, said, this man is certainly a prophet.
some said, this is the Messias. but said others, shall the Messias come out of Galilee?
the officers answered, never did man speak like this man.
they said to him, master, this woman was actually taken in adultery.
they said this only to ensnare him, that they might have some accusation against him. but Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
Jesus delivered this discourse in the treasury, when he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, for his hour was not yet come.
and he said to them, ye are from beneath, I am from above: ye are of this world, I am not of this world.
your actions are like your father. at this they reply'd, we are no bastards; we have but one father, even God.
upon this said the Jews to him, now we plainly perceive you are mad. Abraham is dead, and the prophets too; and yet you say, if a man observes your doctrine, he shall never die.
and his disciples propos'd to him this question, master, was it for his own sins, or for the sins of his parents, that he was born blind?
having said this, he spit on the ground, which by means of his saliva he made into clay, wherewith he anointed the eyes of the blind man,
the neighbours therefore, and they who before had seen him begging, said, is not this he that used to sit begging?
this is he, said some; he is like him, said others: but he said, I am the man.
This very man that had been blind, was at length brought to the Pharisees.
thereupon some of the Pharisees said, this man has no divine mission, because he does not observe the sabbath. but said others, if he be an impostor, how can he do such miracles? and there was a schism among them.
and ask'd them, is this your son, who you say was born blind? how came it then that he now sees?
his parents answered, that this is our son, and that he was born blind: we are very certain.
his parents said this, because they were afraid of the Jews: for the Jews had agreed in this, that if any man did own him for the Messias, he should be excommunicated.
it was this made his parents say, "he is of age, ask him."
They therefore again call'd the man that had been blind, and said to him, in the name of God tell the truth: for we know that this man is an impostor.
we know that God commission'd Moses: as for this fellow, we don't know who sent him.
if this man had not his mission from God, he could do nothing.
and Jesus said, to execute justice am I come into this world: that they who see not, may see; and that they who do see, may become blind.
some of the Pharisees who were then present hearing this, said to him, are we likewise blind?
Jesus talk'd to them in this figurative way: but they did not understand the meaning of his discourse.
other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring; they will hear my voice; and so there shall be but one fold, and one pastor.
no man can take it from me, but I voluntarily lay it down: I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. this is the order I have received from my father.
There was another schism therefore among the Jews, occasion'd by this discourse.
others said, this is not the language of one possess'd: can a demon give sight to the blind?
and many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but every thing that he said concerning this man, was true.
his two sisters therefore sent this message to Jesus; he, Lord, whom you love, is sick.
Jesus answered, are there not twelve hours in the day? he that travels by day does not stumble, because he has the light of this world to see by.
do you believe this? yes, Lord, said Martha, I believe that thou art the Messiah the son of God, who was to come into the world.
When she had said this, she went privately to call Mary her sister, saying, the master is come, and calls for you.
but some of them said, this man who has given sight to the blind, could not he have prevented Lazarus's death?
Jesus said, take away the stone. Martha, sister to the deceas'd, said to him, Lord, by this time he is offensive: for he hath been dead four days.
I know that thou hearest me always: but I say this, because of the people here present, that they may believe that thou hast sent me."
when he had spoke this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
upon this the chief priests and the Pharisees being assembled in council, said, what shall we do? for this man performs many miracles.
if we let him go on at this rate, all will believe on him; and the Romans will come, and destroy both our temple and nation.
now this he did not say from his own motion: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation:
said, why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, to be given to the poor?
this he said, not out of any concern for the poor; but because being purse-bearer he used to pilfer what was in bank.
then said Jesus, let her alone: against the day of my burial hath she kept this.
this passage his disciples did not understand at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, they remembred how they had mounted him, and perceiv'd that those words related to him.
and it was upon the rumour of this miracle, that the people crowded to him.
he that loveth his life, shall lose it: but he that sacrifices his life in this world, shall preserve it to eternity.
"Now is my soul troubled; what! shall I say, father, save me from this concern? but for this cause am I come, even for this very concern.
father, glorify thy name." then there came this voice from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."
Jesus said, this voice came not for my sake, but for yours.
now is this world condemn'd: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
Upon which the people said to him, we have learnt from the law, that the Messiah is to live for ever: why do you say then, the son of man must be lift up? who is this son of man?
Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus perceiving that his hour was come, when he was to pass out of this world, and go to the father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me."
by this mutual love shall all men know that you are my disciples.
this is what I have to tell you, for the little time that I am with you.
this I have told you now, before it come to pass, that when it is come to pass, ye may believe. my conversation will now be but short with you,
this is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.
of judgment, because the prince of this world is condemn'd.
now we are convinc'd that you know all our difficulties, and have no occasion that any man should propose them to you: by this we believe that you were sent from God.
Jesus having said this, lift up his eyes to heaven, and said, "father, the hour is come; glorify thy son, that thy son also may glorify thee.
and this is life eternal, to acknowledge thee to be the only true God, and Jesus to be the Messiah whom thou hast sent.
then said the damsel, that kept the door, to Peter, are you also one of this man's disciples? I am not, said he.
but Peter denied this too, and immediately the cock crew.
Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, what crime do you object to this man?
Jesus answered, my kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, I should have had my guards to prevent my falling into the hands of the Jews: whereas my kingdom is of another nature.
upon this Pilate said to him, you are then a king? Jesus answered, you say right, for I am a king. to this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, to persuade mankind of the truth. every one that loves truth is observant of my directions.
what is truth? said Pilate. and upon saying this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, I don't find he is guilty of any crime.
upon this, Pilate propos'd to release him: but the Jews cried out, if you let this man go, you are not Cesar's friend: he that sets up for king, opposes Cesar.
Pilate therefore hearing them talk at this rate, order'd Jesus to be brought forth, and then sat down in a place of Mosaic work on his tribunal, in Syriac call'd Gabbatha.
now this inscription was read by many of the Jews: for Jesus was crucified nigh the city: and it was written in Syriac, Greek, and Latin.
they said therefore among themselves, let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "they parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." this was what the soldiers actually did.
after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst.
he that relates this, was an eye-witness of it, and his relation is true: and he is so assured, what he says is true, that you may rely upon it.
after this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a conceal'd one, pray'd Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave: so he went and took the body of Jesus.
as this sepulchre was nigh at hand, they laid Jesus therein, because the time of the preparation of the Jews was expiring.
upon this she went in great haste to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, they have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
After this the disciples return'd to their own home.
and when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "receive ye the holy spirit.
Jesus perform'd many other miracles in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book.
this was the third time that Jesus appear'd to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead.
this he said to signify to Peter by what death he should glorify God. and when he had spoken this, he said to him, follow me.
This is the disciple who testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
Being therefore in his presence, they asked him, saying, Lord, is this the time when you will restore again the kingdom to Israel?
After this discourse, while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight.
"ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up to heaven? this same Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, shall descend in the same manner as ye have seen him ascend thither."
he was of our number, and shared in the functions of this ministry.
that he may be admitted to this apostolick ministry which Judas abandoned, to go to his own place."
and upon the rumour of this event, the multitude came together, and were confounded, every man hearing the disciples speak in his own language.
and they were all amazed, and perplex'd, saying one to another, what can the meaning of this be?
But Peter standing up with the eleven, and raising his voice, said to them, ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known to you, and observe what I say.
but this is the accomplishment of what was said by the prophet Joel,
men and brethren, let me with assurance tell you of the patriarch David, who died and was buried here, his sepulchre being with us to this day:
that, as he was a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him, to place the fruit of his loins upon his throne: foreseeing this,
'tis this Jesus whom God hath raised up, of which we all are witnesses.
Now when they heard this, their hearts were struck with remorse, and they said to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?
which Peter observing, thus addressed them, ye men of Israel, why are ye so surprized at this event? or why do you look so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or piety, we had caus'd this man to walk?
it is the faith which we have in him, that has procured strength to this man whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him, hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
