he said to them, I must likewise proclaim the kingdom of God in other cities; for to that end am I sent.

and every day either in the temple or in private houses they continued to preach and proclaim Jesus to be the Christ.

but when they had embraced the doctrine of Philip, concerning the kingdom of the Messias, and the authority of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

some of them were of Cyprus and Cyrene, and upon their arrival at Antioch they address'd themselves to the Greeks, and preach'd to them the Lord Jesus.

and he commanded us to publish, and to testify to the people, that he was the person whom God had constituted to be the judge of the living, and of the dead. he is the person to whom all the prophets give this attestation, that all who believe in him, shall receive remission of sins, by his authority.

but when the advocate is come, whom I will send to you from the father, even the spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the father, he shall testify of me. and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Paul, as was his custom, us'd to go there, and for three sabbath-days discours'd to the Jews from the scriptures, explaining them, and setting it to view, that the Messiah was to suffer and rise again from the dead: and that Jesus, whom he denounc'd to them, was that very Messiah.

Concerning the Logos, the author of Life, we declare what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have consider'd, and what has been the object of our touch. for the life was manifested, we have seen it, we testify of it, and denounce unto you, that eternal life which was with the father, and was manifested unto us. what we have seen and heard, we declare unto you, that ye also may be of the same society with us: and truly associated with the father, and with his son Jesus Christ.

"whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved." But how, say you, shall they call on him on whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?

But after John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, spreading the good news of the kingdom of the Messiah. "the time, said he, is accomplish'd, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."

know then, my brethren, it is by him, that the remission of sins is offer'd to you: by him, every one who believes, is purged from all that guilt, for which the law of Moses had made no such provision.

and bringing them out, he said, sirs, what must I do to be saved? believe, said they, on the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you, and your family. then they declared the word of the Lord to him, and to all his family.read more.
at the same time of night he washed their stripes, and immediately he was baptized, he, and all that belong'd to him. then he conducted them to his house, and gave them an entertainment; and he and his family were affected with joy, for having believed in God.

and try'd to gain upon the Jews and the Greek proselytes:

but Agrippa reply'd to Paul, you almost persuade me I shall be a christian!

by whose favour I have received the office of an apostle to bring the Gentiles every where to the obedience of faith preached in his name:

but whether I or they labour'd most, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

Shall I then, who know this terrible judgment of the Lord, endeavour to appease men? as for God, I am approved by him, and I trust also you are convinced of my being so approved.

being thus appointed missionarys by the holy spirit, they went to Seleucia, where they embark'd for Cyprus. when they were arrived at Salamis, they preach'd the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews, and had John for their assistant.

at length they pass'd thro' Pisidia, and came to Pamphilia: and having preach'd the word in Perga, they went to Attalia:

After this the Lord nominated seventy disciples more, and sent them before by two and two, into all the cities, and towns, where he himself design'd to go.

then he invited them in, and they lodged there. On the morrow, Peter departed with them, and some of his brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

Being arriv'd at Iconium, they went both together to the Jewish synagogue, where they discours'd in such a manner, that a great number both of Jews and of Greeks believed.

but after they had travers'd Phrygia and Galatia, they were order'd by the holy spirit not to preach the gospel in Asia:

Upon this the brethren immediately sent Paul away to the sea-coast, but Silas and Timothy staid there. however Paul's guides attended him to Athens: where they left him, after having received his orders for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed.

from the first day to the present time. being persuaded that

be you then entirely upon the watch: be insensible to toil: perform the work of an evangelist, and discharge your ministerial function.

then the Lord said to Paul in a vision by night, "be not afraid, but speak, and be not silenc'd: (since I am with thee, and no man shall lift up his hand so as to hurt thee:) for my people in this city are numerous." so he continued there a year and a half preaching the word of God among them.

After this, Paul staid two whole years in a house he had hired, and gave access to all that visited him, preaching the kingdom of God, and instructing them in all things relating to the Lord Jesus Christ, with the utmost freedom, without being molested.

while I am absent apply yourself to reading, to exhortation, and instruction. don't neglect the gift you have, which was given you with the ministerial charge, when you receiv'd imposition of hands from the presbytery.

to preach the word with assiduity upon all occasions: reprove, censure, exhort, with the most tender persuasions.

for we are not like others, who adulterate the word of God; but we preach the pure gospel of Christ, as I receiv'd it from God, and as in the presence of God.

for this is to me matter of glorying, the testimony of my conscience, that without artifice, and with religious sincerity, not by worldly wisdom, but by God's favourable assistance I have behaved my self towards all men, but more particularly to you.

for our doctrine was free from all imposture, avarice, and fraud. we preach the gospel just as God thought fit to intrust it with us, not being studious to please men, but God, who approves our sincerity. our address to you was without any flattery, as you yourselves can witness, and God is witness that we had no avarice to disguise.

Our affection therefore to you being so great, we were as ready to give our lives for you, as we were to communicate the divine gospel to you, so much did you engage our love. for you remember, my brethren, our labour and toil: how we worked day and night, that in preaching the gospel of God, we might not be chargeable to any of you.

I have not desir'd to get from any one either silver, or gold, or apparel. you yourselves can witness, that what was necessary for myself and those who were with me, these very hands have supply'd.

we are fatigu'd by our manual toil: when reviled, we pray: when persecuted, we don't repine:

or I and Barnabas, are we only excluded the privilege of not working?

so am I: are they ministers of Christ? is it my vanity? I am more so: in toilsome labours I surpass them, in stripes I am exceedingly beyond them, in prisons I have been oftner, and frequently in the very jaws of death. from the Jews I have five times received forty stripes save one. thrice was I whip'd with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I was shipwreck'd; a night and a day I was floating on the deep:read more.
in my voyages I have been frequently in perils from rivers, in perils from robbers, in perils from my own countrymen, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the country, in perils at sea, in perils among false brethren; expos'd to toil, to fatigue, to frequent watchings, to hunger and thirst, to frequent fastings, to cold and penury. besides these troubles from without, that which crouds upon me daily, the care of all the churches. who is afflicted, and I not suffer? who is offended, and I not inflam'd?

went and seized on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.

save what the holy spirit in every city declares, "that bonds and afflictions wait for me." things that little affect me, nor is life so much my concern, as to finish my course, and the charge I receiv'd from the Lord Jesus, to attest the declaration of the divine favour.

the commander advanc'd, seiz'd him, and order'd to load him with two chains: then demanded who he was, and what he had done.

in particular for me, that I may have leave to speak without any restraint, and make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an embassador, tho' in chains: that I may duely represent it to the full.

after the apostles were called in, and scourged, they charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then releas'd them. out they went from the council,

upon this the populace rose upon them, and the Officers order'd them to be stript and scourg'd. after they had been severely lash'd, they were thrown into prison, the jayler being charg'd to keep them safe.

then they dragg'd him out of the city, and stoned him: the false witnesses having laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

Now some Jews being arriv'd from Antioch and Iconium, work'd so upon the people, that they stoned Paul, and dragg'd him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

and he openly preach'd in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Hellenists, who therefore plotted against his life:

the whole city was in an uproar, the people crouded together: they seized Paul, dragg'd him out of the temple, and then shut the gates. as they were busy upon his execution, news came to the commander of the cohort, that the whole city was in an uproar.

how I have serv'd the Lord with all resignation, with tears, and trials occasion'd by the insidious practices of the Jews:

on the contrary, notwithstanding the outrages, you know we suffer'd at Philippi, we had still the resolution, by the divine assistance, to preach the gospel of God to you without reserve against all opposition.

I call Christ, and the holy spirit to witness with my conscience, that I speak the truth without guile, when I say, that I have great heaviness, and continual sorrow in my heart.
