However, what we preach is wisdom, to those who are thoroughly instructed: yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who will soon come to nothing.
for the wisdom of this world is folly, in the eye of God: as it is written, "he surprizes the wise in all their artifices." and again, "the Lord knows, that the thoughts of the wise are vain."
to level all the barriers they contrive for obstructing the divine doctrine, and to make their pride captive to the authority of Christ.
Whoever is a skilful moralist, let him show by his virtuous conduct, that he practises the humble precepts of wisdom. but if envy and contention imbitter your minds, don't think your false pretences can stand against the truth: such wisdom is not derived from heaven; but is terrestrial, sensual, demoniacal.
let no man consult only his private interest, but let every man consult likewise the interest of others.

Now it is by virtue of my apostolical commission, that I charge every man among you, not to entertain too high an opinion of himself; but modestly consider, that 'tis God who has dealt to every man his proportion of spiritual gifts.
for consider, brethren, that not many worldly wise, not many men of power, not many men of birth are among you that are called.
let no man deceive himself: if any among you pretends to worldly wisdom, let him commence fool, in order to be truly wise.
Brethren, be not childish in understanding: be as innocent as babes, but use your understanding like men.
for I think I am not at all inferior to the chiefest of the apostles. if my language is inelegant, my knowledge is not contemptible; but has been fully display'd among you on all occasions.
for all that God has created is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it be receiv'd with thanksgiving:
for I dare not rank or compare my self with some who vaunt themselves: but they making their self-conceit the only standard whereby to judge of themselves, show their want of judgment.
out of the heart proceed evil designs, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimony, slanders.
for they shew that the duties prescrib'd by the law, are written in their hearts, their consciences bearing witness to it, by their own reasonings alternately accusing and excusing them.

therefore sollicitous about the morrow: for the morrow shall be taken up with the cares of the morrow, the trouble of the day is sufficient for one day.
Let your minds then be duely prepar'd, be vigilant, and constantly expect the favour you will meet with at the appearance of Jesus Christ. as obedient children be no longer influenc'd by those passions, which were the effects of your former ignorance.
