Then he propos'd this parable, concerning those who had a great opinion of their own justice, and look'd with contempt upon others.
I tell you this man went home approv'd as just, and not the other. for whoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Then a person of distinction ask'd him this question, good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
upon hearing this he was very sad: for he had a large estate.
who shall not receive abundantly more even in this age, and everlasting life in the age to come.

Their attention being raised by this, Jesus pursued his discourse with a parable, occasion'd by their thinking, that, because he was advanc'd so nigh to Jerusalem, the kingdom of God would immediately commence.
but he being hated by the citizens, after he was gone, they sent a deputation to court, to make this protest, "we will not have him for our king."
After this discourse, Jesus pursued his journey towards Jerusalem.
if any one should ask you, why you untie it, let this be your answer, because the Lord has occasion for it.
upon this some of the Pharisees, who were in the crowd, said to him, master, rebuke your disciples.
in these words, "O that thou hadst consider'd, at least in this very day, the opportunity you had of being happy! but now alas! it is vanish'd from your eyes."
Then he propos'd this parable to the people, a man planted a vineyard, let it out to husbandmen, and then went a travelling for some time.
but when the husbandmen saw him, they said to one another, this is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be our own.
The chief priests, and the Scribes perceiving that he had applied this parable to them, were eager to seize upon him at that very time; but they were afraid of the people.
they address'd him therefore in this manner; master, we know that what you say and teach is all right. you are not influenc'd by the quality of men, but explain the divine law with sincerity:
show me a penny: whose image and inscription is this? they answer'd, Cesar's.
Afterwards some of the Pharisees, who deny there is any resurrection, accosted him with this question,
and he said, I declare unto you, that this poor widow has thrown in more than they all.
thereupon they said to him, master, when shall this happen? and by what sign shall we know that the event is coming?
he answered, take care, that you be not seduced: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ. it won't be long e'er this happens, therefore do not follow them.
for this is the time of vengeance, when all that is writ, shall be accomplished.
wo to them that are with child, or to them that give suck in those days: for this will be a region of great distress, and wrath will pour down upon this people.
I tell it you for certain, this generation shall not pass away, till all these things are accomplished.
set a guard upon yourselves, that ye be not stupified by surfeiting and drunkenness, or by the disquietudes of this life, and so that day come upon you with a surprize.
and he said to them, I have ardently desired to eat this passover with you, before I suffer.
for I declare unto you, I shall not celebrate this passover with you any more, to the time, when it shall have its accomplishment in the kingdom of the messiah.
having then taken the cup, and given thanks, he said, take this, and distribute it to one another.
then he took bread, and having given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to them, saying, this represents my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me.
and after supper he likewise gave the cup, saying, this cup is the new testament sealed by my blood, which is shed for you.
upon this they began to enquire of one another, which of them it was that should do such an action.
he pray'd in these words, father, "O that you would divert this cup from me! nevertheless not my will, but thine be done."
but one of the servants seeing him by the fire, star'd him in the face, and said, this man was with him too.
about an hour after another confidently affirm'd, saying, this fellow was certainly with him; for he too is a Galilean.
and besides all this, they loaded him with the most impious invectives.
upon this they cry'd, what occasion have we for further evidence? for we ourselves have heard enough from his own mouth.
and thus they began their charge, we found this man subverting our nation, opposing the giving tribute to Cesar, asserting that he himself is Christ the king.
at last Pilate said to the chief priests, and to the people, I don't find any crime in this man.
but they were the more vehement, saying, he promotes sedition by speading such doctrine thro' all Judea, from Galilee to this place.
you have represented this man to me as one that was stirring up the people to a revolt: you see I have examin'd him in your presence; yet I don't find he is guilty of the crimes you have laid to his charge: no, nor even Herod;
all the people cry'd out, let this man die, and release to us Barabbas.
they likewise put the following inscription over his head, in Greek, in Latin, and in Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, who he was.
he own'd it, and did not deny it; but made this protestation, I am not the Christ.
this is he of whom I said, after me cometh a man, who was before me: for he did indeed exist before me.
After this he went down to Capernaum, in company with his mother, his brethren, and his disciples: but they stay'd there only a few days.
Jesus answered them, saying, destroy this temple, and within three days I will raise it up.
to this said the Jews, forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
and this is the subject of their condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
After this Jesus went with his disciples into Judea, where he stay'd with them for some time,
but John made them this answer, a man can have no authority, but what he derives from heaven.
the bridegroom is he that hath a right to the bride: as for the friend of the bridegroom, who is nigh his person and heareth him, he greatly rejoyces at the voice of the bridegroom: upon this account my joy is compleat.

Jesus answered her, they that drink of this water, will be thirsty again:
sir, replied the woman, give me this water, that I may never be adry, nor come hither to draw more.
our fathers worshipped upon this mountain; and you say, that Jerusalem is the place where we ought to perform our worship.
Jesus said to her, woman, believe me, the time is coming when it shall be neither on this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem that ye shall worship the father.
Upon this his disciples came, and were surpriz'd at his conversing with the woman: yet none of them said, what did you ask her? or, why do you talk with her?
see a man who told me all that ever I have done: is not this the Christ?
upon this occasion, that saying is verified, "one soweth, and another reapeth."
now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ.
Jesus did this second miracle when he return'd from Judea to Galilee.
Some time after this the feast of the Jews being come, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
(for a messenger went down at certain times into the pool, and agitated the water: the first then that stepped in after this commotion of the water, was cured of whatever disease he had.)
let not this surprize you: for the time is coming, when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and they that have done good,
not that I need the testimony of men: but this I tell you, for your own security.
for this I know of you, that you are not possess'd with any love for God.
Jesus then lifting up his eyes, and seeing a great company coming to him, said to Philip, where can we buy bread to feed this people?
(this he said to prove Philip: for he himself knew what he had to do.)
The people, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, cry'd out, this is of a truth that prophet who was to come into the world.

this is that bread which came down from heaven: very different from that manna, which your fathers did eat but died nevertheless: he that eateth of this bread, shall live for ever.
when many of his disciples, who heard him, said, this is strange doctrine, who can hear it?
Jesus perceiving in himself, that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, doth this offend you?
After this Jesus resided in Galilee: for he would not be in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. now the

Then some that belong'd to Jerusalem, said, is not this he whom they seek to kill?
however, we know from what quarter this man comes: but when Christ comes it will be unknown whence he came.
besides many of the people believed on him, and said, when Christ comes, will he do more miracles than this man hath done?
(but this he meant of the spirit, which they that believed on him, should receive: for the spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)
