And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his doctrine,
because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.
And when he had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
And when he had entered into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, beseeching him,
Then Jesus said to the captain, "Go; as you have had faith, your prayer is granted." And the servant was cured at that very hour.
And when Jesus had come to Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law laid down and in a fever;
When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were under the power of demons, and at a mere word He drove the spirits out, and cured all who were sick,
Seeing great crowds about Him Jesus had given directions to cross to the other side of the Lake,
And when he had entered into a boat, his disciples followed him.
And when he had come to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with demons, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
And he said to them, Go. And when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine: and behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.
But they that fed them fled, and went away into the city and related everything, and what had happened as to those possessed by demons.
At once all the citizens came out to meet Jesus; and when they had seen him, they begged him to move away from their country.
And they took to him a man stretched on a bed who had no power of moving; and Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the man who was ill, Son, take heart; you have forgiveness for your sins.
But [when] the crowds saw [this], they were afraid and glorified God who had given such authority to men.
Jesus was at table indoors, and many taxgatherers and sinners had come to be guests with him and his disciples.
And behold, a woman who had been suffering with a hemorrhage twelve years approached from behind [and] touched the edge of his cloak,
For she had said to herself, "If I can just touch His robe, I will be healed."
Now when Jesus had come into the house of the ruler, and had seen the flute-players and the wailing crowd, he said,
But when the crowd had been sent out, he entered [and] took her hand, and the girl got up.
After He had gone into the house, and the blind men had gone up to Him, Jesus said to them, "Do you really believe that I can do this?" They said to Him, "Yes, Lord."
and they had their sight: but Jesus gave them a strict charge, saying, take care not to let any man know it:
But they, when they had departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
And when they had gone away, behold, the people brought to him a man, a dumb demoniac.
And [after] the demon had been expelled, the one who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were astonished, saying, "{This has never been seen before} in Israel!"
And [when he] saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were weary and dejected, like sheep that did not have a shepherd.
And when he had called to him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness, and all manner of disease.
These twelve Jesus sent out when he had charged them, saying, Go not off into the way of the nations, and into a city of Samaritans enter ye not;
Have no fear of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul. You had better be afraid of one who can destroy both soul and body in the pit.
And it happened that when Jesus had finished giving orders to his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and to preach in their towns.
Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
And when they had gone, Jesus began to say to the multitudes, concerning John, What went you out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
Then he began to reproach the towns in which the majority of his miracles had been done, because they did not repent:
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today.
But he said to them, Have you no knowledge of what David did when he had need of food, and those who were with him?
But I say to you, That one greater than the temple is here. And if ye had known what that meaneth,
And if you had known what {it means}, 'I want mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless.
And when he had departed thence, he went into their synagogue.
And behold, [there was] a man who had a withered hand, and they asked him, saying, "Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath?" in order that they could accuse him.
And he said unto them, "Which of you would it be, if he had a sheep fallen into a pit on the Sabbath day, that would not take him and lift him out?
Then he said to the man. "Stretch out your hand." The man stretched it out; and it had become as sound as the other.
The man stretched it out, and it had become sound like the other. But when the Pharisees came out, they consulted together how they might destroy him.
charging them strictly not to make him known ??17 it was for the fulfilment of what had been said by the prophet Isaiah,
Then they took to him one with an evil spirit, who was blind and had no power of talking: and he made him well so that he had the power of talking and seeing.
And I say to you, a person will [have to] give an account [to God] on the day of judgment for every careless word he had spoken [while on earth].
And while he was yet speaking to the multitudes, lo, his mother and brethren had stood without, seeking to speak to him,
To the one who had said this, Jesus replied, "Who is my mother and who are my brothers?"
That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake,
And many multitudes were gathered to him, so as for him (having entered in) to sit in the boat, and all the multitude had stood on the shore.
and others fell upon the rocky places where they had not much earth, and immediately they sprang up out of the ground because of not having any depth of earth,
But when the sun was risen, they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered.
And some seeds went among thorns, and the thorns came up and they had no room for growth:
For truly, I say to you that prophets and upright men had a desire to see the things which you see, and saw them not; and to have knowledge of the words which have come to your ears, and they had it not.
When anyone hears the message of the kingdom but does not understand it, the evil one [i.e., the devil] comes to him and grabs away what had been sown in his heart. This is the person who was scattered to the side of the road.
But while men were sleeping, one who had hate for him came and put evil seeds among the grain, and went away.
When the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
He spoke another parable to them: The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until it had been all leavened.
Jesus said all this to the crowds in parables; he never spoke to them except in a parable ??35 to fulfil what had been said by the prophet, I will open my mouth in parables, I will speak out what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.
When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field."
Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. The one who has ears had better listen!
"The kingdom of heaven is like a pot of gold which was buried in a field, which a man found and buried again; and for joy over it he went and sold all he had and bought that field.
and having found one pearl of great value, he went and sold all whatever he had and bought it.
And it happened that when Jesus had finished these parables he went away from there.
And when he had come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
And the works of power which he did there were small in number because they had no faith.
and governor of that district] heard the report about what Jesus had been saying and doing.
For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother.
because John had been saying to him, "It is not permitted for you to have her."
Now King Herod became very distressed [over such a gruesome request]; but because he had [promised with] oaths and [to look good in front of] his party guests, he ordered John's head to be given [to her].
And he sent [orders] [and] had John beheaded in the prison,
upon which, his disciples came to take away the body, and having buried it, they went to tell Jesus what had happened.
When Jesus had heard that, he departed thence by ship into a desert place out of the way. And when the people had heard thereof, they followed him afoot out of their cities.
And [as he] got out, he saw the large crowd and had compassion on them and healed their sick.
And when evening had come, the disciples came to him, saying, This place is waste land, and the time is now past; send the people away so that they may go into the towns and get themselves food.
Jesus ordered the people to take their seats on the grass; and, taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to Heaven, and said the blessing, and, after he had broken the loaves, gave them to his disciples; and they gave them to the crowds.
And they all ate and had aplenty. Then they took up the pieces left over, which made twelve basketfuls.
But those that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
And He at once had the disciples get into the boat and cross to the other side ahead of Him, while He dismissed the crowds.
And as soon as he had sent the people away, he went up into a mountain alone to pray. And when night was come he was there himself alone.
And he said, Come. And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell.
And [after they] had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were sick,
But you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, That by which you might have had profit from me is given to God;
Then, when He had called the people to Him, Jesus said, "Hear and understand.
So that the people were full of wonder when they saw that those who had no voice were talking, the feeble were made strong, those whose bodies were broken had the power of walking, and the blind were able to see: and they gave glory to the God of Israel.
So when he had summoned the crowd, and seated them upon the ground,
he took the seven loaves and the fish and [after he] had given thanks, he broke [them] and began giving [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds.
And they all ate and had aplenty, and they took up the pieces left over, which made seven hamper-basketfuls.
And they that had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children.
And when he had sent the people away, he got into the boat, and came into the country of Magadan.
And [when] the disciples arrived at the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
Then they saw that it was not the leaven of bread which he had in mind, but the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Now when Jesus had come into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he said, questioning his disciples, Who do men say that the Son of man is?
It was just after that that Jesus Christ for the first time clearly taught His disciples that He had to go to Jerusalem and submit to many forms of suffering at the hands of the elders, high priests, and scribes, and be killed, but be raised to life on the third day.
And after six days [had passed], Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John aside and went up into a high mountain [i.e., an unidentified mountain nearby].
And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.
