He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not.
But, as many as did receive him, he gave, unto them, authority, children of God, to become, - unto them who were believing on his name:

Nathanael said to him, "From where do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, [when you] were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathaniel said to him: How knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said to him: Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig-tree, I saw you.
On the third day two people were going to be married at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there:
as likewise Jesus and his disciples, who were all invited to the feast.
now there were six cisterns of stone plac'd there for the use of the Jews in their purifications, containing two or three firkins a-piece.
And, when the master of the feast had tasted the water, now made, wine, and knew not whence it was, - though, they who were ministering, knew, even they who had drawn out the water, the master accosteth the bridegroom,
After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples, and they were there not more than two or three days.
And the passover of the Jews were nigh, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
where he found in the temple those that sold oxen, sheep, and doves, besides the changers of money, who were sitting there.
And to those who were trading in doves he said, Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a market.
But his words were about that holy building which was his body.
and didn't need anyone to tell him what people were like, because he himself knew what was in every person.
This man came to him at night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that [you are] a teacher who has come from God, for no one is able to perform these signs that you are performing unless God were with him."
In most solemn truth I tell you that we speak what we know, and give testimony of that of which we were eye-witnesses, and yet you all reject our testimony.
and this is the subject of their condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
Therefore, when the Lord [Jesus] knew that the Pharisees were aware of Him making and immersing more disciples than John,

for his disciples were gone away to the city to buy provisions.
the woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus replied, you were in the right to say you have no husband:
Our forefathers worshiped on this mountain [i.e., Mt. Gerizim, which was visible from where they were sitting]; but you say that Jerusalem is the place where people should worship [God]."
Upon this his disciples came, and were surpriz'd at his conversing with the woman: yet none of them said, what did you ask her? or, why do you talk with her?
They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
In the meanwhile the disciples were asking him, saying, "Rabbi, eat [something]!"
So the

So the Jews were saying to the one who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not permitted for you to pick up the mat!"
Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place.

And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain himself alone.
and they entered into a boat, and were going over the sea unto Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
so when they had rowed about five and twenty, or thirty furlongs, seeing Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh to the ship, they were frightned.
They were terrified; but He called to them. "It is I," He said, "do not be afraid."
then they readily received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they were bound.

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into boats themselves and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
Jesus answered them, I declare unto you, you seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye had loaves to eat, and were filled.
The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at him, because he said, 'I am the bread that came down out of the heaven;'
and they were saying, "Is this one not Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"
The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, 'How is this one able to give us his flesh to eat?'
But Jesus, [because he] knew within himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Does this cause you to be offended?
Suppose you were to see the Son of Man going back where He was before?
But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.
and he said, therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my father.
For this [reason] many of his disciples {drew back} and were not walking with him any longer.
And after these [things] Jesus was going about in Galilee. For he did not want to go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.
For, not even his brethren, were believing on him.
But when his brethren were gone up unto the feast, then went he also up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.
during the feast the Jews were in search of him, and said, where can he be?
and the people were much divided about him: for some said, he is a good man: others said, not at all; but he seduces the people.
Nevertheless, no one would speak openly about him because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.
at which the Jews were surprized, saying, how came be acquainted with the scriptures, a man of no education?
Jesus answered them, "I performed one [miraculous] deed and you were all amazed by it [i.e., the healing of the crippled man on the Sabbath day. See 5:1-9].

So then, some of them of Jerusalem were saying - Is not, this, he whom they are seeking to kill?

The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things [under their breath] about Him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent
The Jews [i.e., the authorities] were saying among themselves, "Where will this man go that we will not be able to find him? Will he go where the Jewish people are scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet given ; because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Some from amongst the multitude, therefore, having hearkened unto these words, were saying - This, is, in truth, the prophet.
Others were saying, "This man is the Christ!" But others were saying, "No, for the Christ does not come from Galilee, [does he]?
But some were saying, "The Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does he? Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah is from David's family and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"
so that the people were divided in their opinions about him.
And some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
When the officers returned to the Chief Priests and Pharisees, they were asked: "Why have you not brought him?"
They answered him, "Are you from Galilee, too? Search [the Scriptures], and you will see that no prophet will come from Galilee." [Note: They were probably referring to "the prophet" predicted to come by Moses. Deut. 18:15]. {{Most ancient manuscripts do not contain the section from 7:53 through 8:11, or else place it elsewhere in the book.
Now early in the morning he came again to the temple [courts]. And all the people were coming, and he sat down [and] began to teach them.
