When Jesus reached the district of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

He said to them, "Who do you yourselves say that I am?"

"And if your own hand or your own foot makes you do wrong, cut it off and put it out of your way. It is better for you to get into life maimed or crippled than to have both hands or both feet to be thrown into everlasting torture.

And if your own eye makes you do wrong, pluck it out and put it out of your way. It is better for you to go into life with a single eye than to have both eyes to be thrown into the pit of torture.

Take what belongs to you and go. I want to give this man hired last as much as I do you.

So they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, to say to Him, "Teacher, we know that you are in the habit of telling the truth and of teaching the way of God in honesty, and you do not care what anyone says, for you are not partial.

But he denied it before them all, and said, "I do not understand what you mean."

Pilate asked them, "What then shall I do with Jesus. the so-called Christ?" They all answered, "Have Him crucified!"

And His heart was moved with pity for him, so He stretched out His hand and touched him, and said, "I do want to! Be cured!"

Then He said to them: "If you do not understand this story, how, indeed, can you understand any of my stories?

and screamed aloud, "What do you want of me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name, I beg you, do not torture me."

He said to them, "How is it that you do not understand?"

Then Jesus and His disciples left Galilee and went to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way there He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"

If your hand makes you do wrong, cut it off. You might better go into life maimed than keep both your hands and go down to the pit, to the fire that is never put out.

And if your foot makes you do wrong, cut it off. You might better go into life crippled than keep both your feet and be thrown into the pit.

And if your eye makes you do wrong, tear it out. You might better go into the kingdom of God with only one eye than keep both your eyes and be thrown into the pit,

As He was again starting on a journey, a man ran up to Him, and knelt to Him, and was asking Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to get eternal life?"

But he denied it, saying, "I do not know or understand what you mean." Then he went out of the courtyard and was in the gateway to it.

So Jesus said to them, "When you lift the Son of Man (on the cross), you will know that I am the Christ, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but that I say exactly what my Father has instructed me to say.

You are not greater than our forefather Abraham, are you? He is dead and the prophets are dead. Who do you claim to be?"

And yet you have not learned to know Him; but I know Him, and if I say I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you. On the other hand, I do know Him and I do follow His teaching.

Then they asked him, "Where is He?" He answered, "I do not know."

But we do not know how it is that he now can see, or who it was that made his eyes to see. Ask him; he is of age; he can speak for himself."

Then he answered, "I do not know whether He is a sinner. I do know one thing, that once I was blind but now I can see."

He answered them, "I have already told you and you would not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples, do you?"
