'Shame' in the Bible

Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.

She conceived and bore a son, and said, “God has taken away my shame.”

You are not to shame your father by having sex with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual intercourse with her.

You are not to have sex with your father’s wife; it will shame your father.

You are not to have sexual intercourse with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, because it will shame your family.

You are not to shame your father’s brother by coming near his wife to have sexual intercourse; she is your aunt.

You are not to have sexual intercourse with your brother’s wife; it will shame your brother.

Then I took my concubine and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout Israel’s territory, because they committed a horrible shame in Israel.

Then Saul became angry with Jonathan and shouted, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you are siding with Jesse’s son to your own shame and to the disgrace of your mother?

and the Lord sent an angel who annihilated every brave warrior, leader, and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria returned in disgrace to his land. He went to the temple of his god, and there some of his own children struck him down with the sword.

Our guilt has been terrible from the days of our fathers until the present. Because of our iniquities we have been handed over, along with our kings and priests, to the surrounding kings, and to the sword, captivity, plundering, and open shame, as it is today.

Your enemies will be clothed with shame;the tent of the wicked will exist no longer.

If I am wicked, woe to me!And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift up my head.I am filled with shameand aware of my affliction.

You have humiliated me ten times now,and you mistreat me without shame.

Guard me and deliver me;do not let me be put to shame,for I take refuge in You.

A capable wife is her husband’s crown,but a wife who causes shameis like rottenness in his bones.

so the king of Assyria will lead the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old alike, naked and barefoot, with bared buttocks—to Egypt’s shame.

The moon will be put to shameand the sun disgraced,because the Lord of Hosts will reign as kingon Mount Zion in Jerusalem,and He will display His gloryin the presence of His elders.

Lord, Your hand is lifted up to take action,but they do not see it.They will see Your zeal for Your people,and they will be put to shame.The fire for Your adversaries will consume them!

But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame,and refuge in Egypt’s shadow your disgrace.

everyone will be ashamedbecause of a people who can’t help.They are of no benefit, they are no help;they are good for nothing but shame and reproach.

All who make idols are nothing,and what they treasure does not profit.Their witnesses do not see or know anything,so they will be put to shame.

The Lord God will help Me;therefore I have not been humiliated;therefore I have set My face like flint,and I know I will not be put to shame.

“Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame;don’t be humiliated, for you will not be disgraced.For you will forget the shame of your youth,and you will no longer rememberthe disgrace of your widowhood.

Because your shame was double,and they cried out, “Disgrace is their portion,”therefore, they will possess double in their land,and eternal joy will be theirs.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:My servants will eat,but you will be hungry;My servants will drink,but you will be thirsty;My servants will rejoice,but you will be put to shame.

You who tremble at His word,hear the word of the Lord:“Your brothers who hate and exclude youbecause of Me have said,‘Let the Lord be glorifiedso that we can see your joy!’But they will be put to shame.”

Like the shame of a thief when he is caught,so the house of Israel has been put to shame.They, their kings, their officials,their priests, and their prophets

How unstable you are,constantly changing your ways!You will be put to shame by Egyptjust as you were put to shame by Assyria.

Let us lie down in our shame;let our disgrace cover us.We have sinned against the Lord our God,both we and our fathers,from the time of our youth even to this day.We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

The wise will be put to shame;they will be dismayed and snared.They have rejected the word of the Lord,so what wisdom do they really have?

Everyone is stupid and ignorant.Every goldsmith is put to shameby his carved image,for his cast images are a lie;there is no breath in them.

Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, Judah, and the altars you have set up to Shame—altars to burn incense to Baal—as numerous as the streets of Jerusalem.

They have sown wheat but harvested thorns.They have exhausted themselves but have no profit.Be put to shame by your harvestsbecause of the Lord’s burning anger.

I will pull your skirts up over your faceso that your shame might be seen.

Lord, the hope of Israel,all who abandon Youwill be put to shame.All who turn away from Mewill be written in the dirt,for they have abandonedthe Lord, the fountain of living water.

Let my persecutors be put to shame,but don’t let me be put to shame.Let them be terrified, but don’t let me be terrified.Bring on them the day of disaster;shatter them with total destruction.

Why did I come out of the wombto see only struggle and sorrow,to end my life in shame?

I will bring on you everlasting shame and humiliation that will never be forgotten.”

Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,handed over to a northern people.

About Moab, this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:Woe to Nebo, because it is about to be destroyed;Kiriathaim will be put to shame; it will be taken captive.The fortress will be put to shame and dismayed!

Moab will be put to shame because of Chemosh,just as the house of Israel was put to shamebecause of Bethel that they trusted in.

Moab is put to shame, indeed dismayed.Wail and cry out!Declare by the Arnonthat Moab is destroyed.

About Damascus:Hamath and Arpad are put to shame,for they have heard a bad report and are agitated;in the sea there is anxiety that cannot be calmed.

Announce to the nations;proclaim and raise up a signal flag;proclaim, and hide nothing.Say: Babylon is captured;Bel is put to shame;Marduk is devastated;her idols are put to shame;her false gods, devastated.

your mother will be utterly humiliated;she who bore you will be put to shame.Look! She will lag behind all the nations—a dry land, a wilderness, an Arabah.

Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel—those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where You have dispersed them because of the disloyalty they have shown toward You.

Lord, public shame belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.

Many of those who sleep in the dustof the earth will awake,some to eternal life,and some to shame and eternal contempt.

“Quit your preaching,” they preach.“They should not preach these things;shame will not overtake us.”

Then my enemy will see,and she will be covered with shame,the one who said to me,“Where is the Lord your God?”My eyes will look at her in triumph;at that time she will be trampledlike mud in the streets.

I am against you.This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.I will lift your skirts over your faceand display your nakedness to nations,your shame to kingdoms.

You have planned shame for your houseby wiping out many peoplesand sinning against your own self.

The righteous Lord is in her;He does no wrong.He applies His justice morning by morning;He does not fail at dawn,yet the one who does wrong knows no shame.

On that day you will not be put to shamebecause of everything you have donein rebelling against Me.For then I will removeyour proud, arrogant people from among you,and you will never again be haughtyon My holy mountain.

they will be like warriors in battletrampling down the mud of the streets.They will fight because the Lord is with them,and they will put horsemen to shame.
