Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four [branching] rivers.
The name of the first [is] the Pishon. It went around all the land of Havilah, where [there is] gold.

And after the birth of Lamech, Methuselah went on living for seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Noah, Lamech went on living for five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters:
The Nephilim [were] upon the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God went into the daughters of humankind, and they bore children to them.
These are the generations of Noah. Noah was an upright man and without sin in his generation: he went in the ways of God.
And Noah went in. And his sons and his wife and his sons' wives went in with him into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

And God kept Noah in mind, and all the living things and the cattle which were with him in the ark: and God sent a wind over the earth, and the waters went down.
And the waters went slowly back from the earth, and at the end of a hundred and fifty days the waters were lower.
And still the waters went on falling, till on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains were seen.
and sent out a raven. It went back and forth as the flood water continued to evaporate throughout the earth.
So Noah went out, and his wife and his sons and their wives with him [after being in the ark one year and ten days].
Every animal, every crawling thing, every bird—and whatever moves on the land—went out by families (types, groupings) from the ark.
The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth. Ham would become the father of Canaan.
And Noah, being a husbandman, went forth and planted a vineyard,

and Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from where the Philistines went forth), and Caphtorim.
And the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; after that the families of the Canaanites went far and wide in all directions;
The Canaanite border went from Sidon going toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and going toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim as far as Lasha.
And after the birth of Arpachshad, Shem went on living for five hundred years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Shelah, Arpachshad went on living for four hundred and three years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Eber, Shelah went on living for four hundred and three years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Peleg, Eber went on living for four hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Reu, Peleg went on living for two hundred and nine years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Serug, Reu went on living for two hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Nahor, Serug went on living for two hundred years, and had sons and daughters:
And after the birth of Terah, Nahor went on living for a hundred and nineteen years, and had sons and daughters:
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot, the son of Haran, {his grandson}, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son, and went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. And they went to Haran, and they settled there.
So Abram went as the Lord had said to him, and Lot went with him: Abram was seventy-five years old when he went away from Haran.
And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot {his nephew}, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and all the persons that they had acquired in Haran, and they went out to go to the land of Canaan. And they went to the land of Canaan.
And Abram went through the land till he came to Shechem, to the holy tree of Moreh. At that time, the Canaanites were still living in the land.
Now there was a famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to live temporarily, for the famine in the land was oppressive and severe.
Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that [was] with him. And Lot [went] with him to the Negev.
And he went on his journeys from the South even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,
But Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.
And Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan; and Lot went toward the east. And they separated the one from the other:
Abram went on living in the land of Canaan, and Lot went to the lowland towns, moving his tent as far as Sodom.
So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the oaks of Mamre at Hebron,

And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and went their way.
They also took Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, for he was living in Sodom,
When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken prisoner, he gathered together 318 of his trained men, who had been born in his household, and they went out in pursuit as far as Dan.
Then after Abram’s return from the defeat (slaughter) of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
I will take nothing except what my young men have eaten, and the share of the spoils belonging to the men [my allies] who went with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share of the spoils.”
When the sun went down, Abram fell sound asleep, and great terror overwhelmed him.
Then when the sun went down and it was dark, he saw a smoking fire and a flaming light which went between the parts of the bodies.
And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
And Abram said, The woman is in your power; do with her whatever seems good to you. And Sarai was cruel to her, so that she went running away from her.
And Abram went down on his face on the earth, and the Lord God went on talking with him, and said,
Then Abraham went down on his face, and laughing, said in his heart, May a man a hundred years old have a child? will Sarah, at ninety years old, give birth?
And God finished speaking with him and went up from Abraham.
And lifting up his eyes, he saw three men before him; and seeing them, he went quickly to them from the door of the tent, and went down on his face to the earth;
Then Abraham went quickly into the tent, and said to Sarah, Get three measures of meal straight away and make cakes.
Next, Abraham ran to the herd, found a choice and tender calf, and gave it to the young men, who went off in a hurry to prepare it.
And the men went on from there in the direction of Sodom; and Abraham went with them on their way.
Now the [two] men (angelic beings) turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.
And the Lord went on his way when his talk with Abraham was ended, and Abraham went back to his place.
So the two messengers went in towards Sodom at eventide, Lot, being seated in the gate of Sodom, - so Lot beheld and rose up to meet them, and bowed himself with his face to the earth.
But he urged them so strongly that they followed him and went into his house. He prepared a feast and baked unleavened bread for them, and they ate.
Before they went to bed, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, the whole population, surrounded the house.
But Lot went out of the doorway to the men, and shut the door after him,
So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were [betrothed, and legally promised] to marry his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he appeared to be joking.
Abraham started out early the next morning to the place where he [only the day before] had stood before the Lord;
and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley [of the Dead Sea]; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of
Now Lot went up from Zoar, and lived in the mountain together with his two daughters, for he was afraid to stay [any longer] in Zoar; and he lived in a cave with his two daughters.
And that night they made their father take much wine; and the older daughter went into his bed; and he had no knowledge of when she went in or when she went away.
And that night again they made their father take much wine; and the younger daughter went into his bed; and he had no knowledge of when she went in or when she went away.
And Abraham went on his way from there to the land of the South, and was living between Kadesh and Shur, in Gerar.
Then God went in unto Abimelech, in a dream of the night, - and said to him, Behold thee dead! because of the woman whom thou hast taken, seeing that, she, is a married woman.
She went on to say, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!"
So early the next morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a leather bottle of water, gave them to Hagar, and placed them on her shoulder. He then sent her away, along with the child. She went off and roamed in the Beer-sheba wilderness.
Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said, “Do not let me see the boy die.” And as she sat down opposite him, she raised her voice and wept.
Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the [empty] skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
So they made an agreement at Beer-sheba, and Abimelech and Phicol, the captain of his army, went back to the land of the Philistines.
And Abraham went on living in the land of the Philistines as in a strange country.
