'Against' in the Bible
At that moment the sentence against Nebuchadnezzar was executed. He was driven away from people. He ate grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with dew from the sky, until his hair grew like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.
Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them, you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand. But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in His hand and who controls the whole course of your life.
The administrators and satraps, therefore, kept trying to find a charge against Daniel regarding the kingdom. But they could find no charge or corruption, for he was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption was found in him.
Then these men said, “We will never find any charge against this Daniel unless we find something against him concerning the law of his God.”
My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths. They haven’t hurt me, for I was found innocent before Him. Also, I have not committed a crime against you my king.”
He will speak words against the Most High and oppress the holy ones of the Most High. He will intend to change religious festivals and laws, and the holy ones will be handed over to him for a time, times, and half a time.
I saw the ram charging to the west, the north, and the south. No animal could stand against him, and there was no rescue from his power. He did whatever he wanted and became great.
I saw him approaching the ram, and infuriated with him, he struck the ram, shattering his two horns, and the ram was not strong enough to stand against him. The goat threw him to the ground and trampled him, and there was no one to rescue the ram from his power.
He will cause deceit to prosperthrough his cunning and by his influence,and in his own mind he will make himself great.He will destroy many in a time of peace;he will even stand against the Prince of princes.Yet he will be shattered—not by human hands.
Lord, public shame belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.
Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against Him
All Israel has broken Your law and turned away, refusing to obey You. The promised curse written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, has been poured out on us because we have sinned against Him.
He has carried out His words that He spoke against us and against our rulers by bringing on us so great a disaster that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done under all of heaven.
He said, “Do you know why I’ve come to you? I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I leave, the prince of Greece will come.
No one has the courage to support me against them except Michael, your prince. However, I will tell you what is recorded in the book of truth. >
Now I will tell you the truth.“Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.
In the place of the king of the South, one from her family will rise up, come against the army, and enter the fortress of the king of the North. He will take action against them and triumph.
“In those times many will rise up against the king of the South. Violent ones among your own people will assert themselves to fulfill a vision, but they will fail.
The king of the North who comes against him will do whatever he wants, and no one can oppose him. He will establish himself in the beautiful land with total destruction in his hand.
Then he will turn his attention to the coasts and islands and capture many. But a commander will put an end to his taunting; instead, he will turn his taunts against him.
During a time of peace, he will come into the richest parts of the province and do what his fathers and predecessors never did. He will lavish plunder, loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will make plans against fortified cities, but only for a time.
“With a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will prepare for battle with an extremely large and powerful army, but he will not succeed, because plots will be made against him.
The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant; he will take action, then return to his own land.
Ships of Kittim will come against him, and being intimidated, he will withdraw. Then he will rage against the holy covenant and take action. On his return, he will favor those who abandon the holy covenant.
“Then the king will do whatever he wants. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god, and he will say outrageous things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, because what has been decreed will be accomplished.
“At the time of the end, the king of the South will engage him in battle, but the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, horsemen, and many ships. He will invade countries and sweep through them like a flood.
He will extend his power against the countries, and not even the land of Egypt will escape.
Hear the word of the Lord, people of Israel,for the Lord has a caseagainst the inhabitants of the land:There is no truth, no faithful love,and no knowledge of God in the land!
But let no one dispute; let no one argue,for My case is against you priests.
The more they multiplied,the more they sinned against Me.I will change their honor into disgrace.
Israel’s arrogance testifies against them.Both Israel and Ephraim stumblebecause of their wickedness;even Judah will stumble with them.
Israel’s arrogance testifies against them,yet they do not return to Yahweh their God,and for all this, they do not seek Him.
Woe to them, for they fled from Me;destruction to them, for they rebelled against Me!Though I want to redeem them,they speak lies against Me.
I trained and strengthened their arms,but they plot evil against Me.
Put the horn to your mouth!One like an eagle comesagainst the house of the Lord,because they transgress My covenantand rebel against My law.
Your calf-idol is rejected, Samaria.My anger burns against them.How long will they be incapable of innocence?
Israel, you have sinnedsince the days of Gibeah;they have taken their stand there.Will not war against the unjustovertake them in Gibeah?
I will discipline them at My discretion;nations will be gathered against themto put them in bondagefor their two crimes.
the roar of battle will rise against your people,and all your fortifications will be demolishedin a day of war,like Shalman’s destruction of Beth-arbel.Mothers will be dashed to piecesalong with their children.
Samaria will bear her guiltbecause she has rebelled against her God.They will fall by the sword;their little ones will be dashed to pieces,and their pregnant women ripped open.
I will repay you for the yearsthat the swarming locust ate,the young locust, the destroying locust,and the devouring locust—My great army that I sent against you.
Therefore, I will send fire against Hazael’s palace,and it will consume Ben-hadad’s citadels.
Therefore, I will send fire against the walls of Gaza,and it will consume its citadels.
I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod,and the one who wields the scepter from Ashkelon.I will also turn My hand against Ekron,and the remainder of the Philistines will perish.The Lord God has spoken.
Therefore, I will send fire against the walls of Tyre,and it will consume its citadels.
Therefore, I will send fire against Teman,and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.
Therefore, I will send fire against Moab,and it will consume the citadels of Kerioth.Moab will die with a tumult,with shouting and the sound of the ram’s horn.
Therefore, I will send fire against Judah,and it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.
Listen to this message that the Lord has spoken against you, Israelites, against the entire clan that I brought from the land of Egypt:
It will be like a man who flees from a liononly to have a bear confront him.He goes home and rests his hand against the wallonly to have a snake bite him.
Isaac’s high places will be deserted,and Israel’s sanctuaries will be in ruins;I will rise up against the house of Jeroboamwith a sword.”
Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words,
Now hear the word of the Lord. You say:Do not prophesy against Israel;do not preach against the house of Isaac.
The vision of Obadiah.This is what the Lord God has said about Edom:We have heard a message from the Lord;a messenger has been sent among the nations:“Rise up, and let us go to war against her.”
For the Day of the Lord is near,against all the nations.As you have done, so it will be done to you;what you deserve will return on your own head.
“Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because their wickedness has confronted Me.”
So they said to him, “What should we do to you to calm this sea that’s against us?” For the sea was getting worse and worse.
He answered them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea so it may quiet down for you, for I know that I’m to blame for this violent storm that is against you.”
Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn’t because the sea was raging against them more and more.
Listen, all you peoples;pay attention, earth and everyone in it!The Lord God will be a witness against you,the Lord, from His holy temple.
I will again bring a conqueroragainst you who live in Mareshah.The nobility of Israel will come to Adullam.
Therefore, the Lord says:I am now planning a disasteragainst this nation;you cannot free your necks from it.Then you will not walk so proudlybecause it will be an evil time.
In that day one will take up a taunt against you,and lament mournfully, saying,“We are totally ruined!He measures out the allotted land of my people.How He removes it from me!He allots our fields to traitors.”
This is what the Lord saysconcerning the prophetswho lead my people astray,who proclaim peacewhen they have food to sink their teeth intobut declare war against the onewho puts nothing in their mouths.
He will settle disputes among many peoplesand provide arbitration for strong nationsthat are far away.They will beat their swords into plows,and their spears into pruning knives.Nation will not take up the sword against nation,and they will never again train for war.
Many nations have now assembled against you;they say, “Let her be defiled,and let us feast our eyes on Zion.”
Now, daughter who is under attack,you slash yourself in grief;a siege is set against us!They are striking the judge of Israelon the cheek with a rod.
He will be their peace.When Assyria invades our land,when it marches against our fortresses,we will raise against it seven shepherds,even eight leaders of men.
They will shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword,the land of Nimrod with a drawn blade.So He will rescue us from Assyriawhen it invades our land,when it marches against our territory.
Your hand will be lifted up against your adversaries,and all your enemies will be destroyed.
I will take vengeance in anger and wrathagainst the nations that have not obeyed Me.
Listen to the Lord’s lawsuit,you mountains and enduring foundations of the earth,because the Lord has a case against His people,and He will argue it against Israel.
My people, what have I done to you,or how have I wearied you?Testify against Me!
Surely a son considers his father a fool,a daughter opposes her mother,and a daughter-in-law is against her mother-in-law;a man’s enemies are the men of his own household.
Because I have sinned against Him,I must endure the Lord’s rageuntil He argues my caseand establishes justice for me.He will bring me into the light;I will see His salvation.
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;the Lord takes vengeanceand is fierce in wrath.The Lord takes vengeance against His foes;He is furious with His enemies.
Whatever you plot against the Lord,He will bring it to complete destruction;oppression will not rise up a second time.
One has gone out from you,who plots evil against Yahweh,and is a wicked counselor.
One who scatters is coming up against you.Man the fortifications!Watch the road!Brace yourself!Summon all your strength!
Beware, I am against you.This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.I will make your chariots go up in smokeand the sword will devour your young lions.I will cut off your prey from the earth,and the sound of your messengerswill never be heard again.
I am against you.This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.I will lift your skirts over your faceand display your nakedness to nations,your shame to kingdoms.
Won’t all of these take up a taunt against him,with mockery and riddles about him?They will say:Woe to him who amasses what is not his—how much longer?—and loads himself with goods taken in pledge.
Since you have plundered many nations,all the peoples who remain will plunder you—because of human bloodshedand violence against lands, cities,and all who live in them.
You have planned shame for your houseby wiping out many peoplesand sinning against your own self.
For your violence against Lebanonwill overwhelm you;the destruction of animals will terrify youbecause of your human bloodshed and violenceagainst lands, cities, and all who live in them.
Are You angry at the rivers, Lord?Is Your wrath against the rivers?Or is Your rage against the seawhen You ride on Your horses,Your victorious chariot?
I heard, and I trembled within;my lips quivered at the sound.Rottenness entered my bones;I trembled where I stood.Now I must quietly wait for the day of distressto come against the people invading us.
I will stretch out My hand against Judahand against all the residents of Jerusalem.I will cut off every vestige of Baalfrom this place,the names of the pagan priestsalong with the priests;
a day of trumpet blast and battle cryagainst the fortified cities,and against the high corner towers.
I will bring distress on mankind,and they will walk like the blindbecause they have sinned against the Lord.Their blood will be poured out like dustand their flesh like dung.
Woe, inhabitants of the seacoast,nation of the Cherethites!The word of the Lord is against you,Canaan, land of the Philistines:I will destroy you until there is no one left.
This is what they get for their pride,because they have taunted and acted arrogantlyagainst the people of the Lord of Hosts.
He will also stretch out His hand against the northand destroy Assyria;He will make Nineveh a desolate ruin,dry as the desert.
On that day you will not be put to shamebecause of everything you have donein rebelling against Me.For then I will removeyour proud, arrogant people from among you,and you will never again be haughtyon My holy mountain.
I asked, “What are they coming to do?”He replied, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so no one could raise his head. These craftsmen have come to terrify them, to cut off the horns of the nations that raised their horns against the land of Judah to scatter it.”
For the Lord of Hosts says this: “He has sent Me for His glory against the nations who are plundering you, for anyone who touches you touches the pupil of His eye.
I will move against them with My power, and they will become plunder for their own servants. Then you will know that the Lord of Hosts has sent Me.
Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor, and do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.
For prior to those days neither man nor beast had wages. There was no safety from the enemy for anyone who came or went, for I turned everyone against his neighbor.
Do not plot evil in your hearts against your neighbor, and do not love perjury, for I hate all this”—this is the Lord’s declaration.
