Now the birth of Christ Jesus occurred under these conditions: After His mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, but before they had lived together, she was found to be an expectant mother through the influence of the Holy Spirit.
But [as] he was considering these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
now by these events, that divine prediction of the Prophet had its full accomplishment, when he said, "Behold,
When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
they answered him, in Bethlehem of Judea: for these are the words of the prophet;
And there he stayed until Herod's death; in fulfillment of these words of the Lord in the Prophet, where he says--'Out of Egypt I called my Son.'
Then were fulfilled these words spoken in the Prophet Jeremiah, where he says--
And there he settled in the town of Nazareth, in fulfillment of these words in the Prophets--'He will be called a Nazarene.'
In these days John the Baptist is present, proclaiming in the desert of Judea;
And do not think to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham [as] father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!
And the tempter approached [and] said to him, "If you are the Son of God, order that these stones become bread."
Again, the devil accompanyed him up a very high mountain, and representing to him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them: all these things,
and he said to him, "I will give to you all these things, if you will fall down [and] worship me."
in order that these words spoken through Isaiah the prophet, might be fulfilled:
the people who lived [there] in [spiritual] darkness saw a great light. Light shone upon these people, who lived in an area that was under the shadow of death."
and he addressed himself to them in these instructions.
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them.
Therefore whoever abolishes one of the least of these commandments and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever keeps [them] and teaches [them], this person will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
But let your statement be 'Yes, yes; no, no,' and anything beyond these is from the evil one.
For if you love [only] those who love you, what reward will you get for that? Do not even the publicans [Note: These were people with a bad reputation for their dishonest tax collecting activities] do that much?
"In addition, when you fast [i.e., go without food and/or drink for religious reasons], do not be like the hypocrites with long faces, for they go around with gloomy expressions on their faces in order to advertise that they are fasting. It is true when I say to you, these people have [already] received their reward.
but I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed like one of these.
for the pagans seek after all these [things]. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these [things].
But seek first his kingdom and righteousness, and all these [things] will be added to you.
Give not that which is holy to the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest these trample them under foot, and those turn upon you and tear you.
Therefore, everything that you would like people to do to you, do [these things] to them also. For this is [what is required by] the law of Moses and the prophets.
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
And it happened when Jesus finished these words the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
And when these words came to the ears of Jesus he was surprised, and said to those who came after him, Truly I say to you, I have not seen such great faith, no, not in Israel.
In fulfillment of these words in the Prophet Isaiah--'He took our infirmities on himself, and bore the burden of our diseases.'
and perished in the waters. And they that were feeding them fled, and went away into the city, and related all these things, as also concerning the demoniacs.
But go and take to heart the sense of these words, My desire is for mercy, not offerings: for I have come not to get the upright, but sinners.
[As] he was saying these [things] to them, behold, one of the rulers came [and] knelt down before him, saying, "My daughter has just now died, but come, place your hand on her and she will live!"
But as these were going out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed by a demon.
Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother,
Jesus sent out these twelve, instructing them saying, "Do not go on the road to the Gentiles, and do not enter into a city of the Samaritans,
Therefore, do not be afraid [of these persecutors], for there is nothing [they do that will remain] covered up; it will [all] be exposed. And there is nothing they will do secretly that will not be made known [openly].
And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he will never lose his reward."
After finishing these instructions to his twelve disciples, Jesus removed from there to teach and preach among their towns.
Now [as] these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
At that time Jesus answered [and] said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these [things] from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to young children.
But if these words had been in your minds, My desire is for mercy and not for offerings, you would not have been judging those who have done no wrong.
in fulfillment of these words in the Prophet Isaiah--
But when the sun came up these tender sprouts were scorched and, since they had such tiny roots, they [quickly] withered away.
And he answering said to them that -- 'To you it hath been given to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens, and to these it hath not been given,
For these people's minds are dull, and their ears have difficulty hearing, and they have shut their eyes. For if this were not the case, they would perceive what they see with their eyes, and comprehend what they hear with their ears, and understand with their minds and would turn [back to God] again so I would heal them [from their sins].'
Another parable he propos'd to them in these words. the state of the gospel in this world may be compar'd to a man who sowed good grain in his field:
"The owner's servants came and asked him, "Master, you sowed good seed in your field, didn't you? Then where did these weeds come from?'
Jesus spoke all these [things] to the crowds in parables, and he was saying nothing to them without a parable,
in fulfillment of these words in the Prophet--'I will speak to them in parables; I will utter things kept secret since the foundation of the world.'
and the field is the world. And the good seed--these are the sons of the kingdom, but the darnel are the sons of the evil one.
He will throw these people into the fiery furnace where there will be crying and excruciating pain.
"Have you understood all these [things]?" They said to him, "Yes."
And it happened that when Jesus had finished these parables he went away from there.
And he came to his hometown [and] began to teach them in their synagogue, so that they were amazed and said, "From where did this man [get] this wisdom and these miracles?
And are not all his sisters with us? From where then did this man [get] all these [things]?"
These things proved a hindrance to their believing in him; whereupon Jesus said: "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country and in his own house."
and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: he is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him.
Upon receiving these tidings, Jesus went away by boat to an uninhabited and secluded district; but the people heard of it and followed Him in crowds from the towns by land.
And these in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "Truly Thou art God's Son."
"These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
Then the disciples came and said to him, Did you see that the Pharisees were troubled when these words came to their ears?
[So], let these Pharisees alone; they are blind leaders. And if a blind person leads a blind person, both of them will fall into a ditch."
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these defile the person.
For evil thoughts, murder, extramarital affairs, sexual immorality, stealing, perjury, slander --- [all these] come from a person's heart,
These are the things that defile a person. But eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person!"
And lo! a woman of Canaan coming out of these coasts, cried aloud, saying to him, Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David: my daughter is a grievous demoniac.
Afterwards Jesus called his disciples to him, and said: "My heart is moved at the sight of all these people, for they have already been with me three days and they have nothing to eat; and I am unwilling to send them away hungry, for fear that they should break down on the way."
But He answered them, {[{[These words are omitted in most ancient manuscripts: "When the sky is reddish in the evening, you predict fair weather [for the next day].
and in the morning, a foul day: when the sky is of a dusky red. hypocrites, can ye judge of the appearance of the sky, and yet not discern the signs of these times?
And at these words the disciples went down on their faces in great fear.
But, so that we do not become a hindrance to these [tax collectors], go to the lake and cast in your hook [and line]. Then take the first fish [you catch], open its mouth and you will find a coin [i.e., worth twice the amount of an individual's Temple tax assessment]. Take it and give it [to the tax collectors] for you and me."
But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him that {a large millstone} be hung on his neck and he be drowned in the depths of the sea.
A curse on the world for such influences to do wrong! For they must come, but a curse on the man from whom these influences come!
"See to it that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven constantly see the face of my Father [who is] in heaven.
In the [same] way it is not the will {of} your Father [who is] in heaven that one of these little ones perish.
And it happened that when Jesus had finished these statements, he went away from Galilee and came into the region of Judea on the other side of the Jordan.
but Jesus said to them, "Let the children alone, do not stop them from coming to me: the Realm of heaven belongs to such as these."
He saith unto him, Which? Jesus, said - These: Thou shalt not commit murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, - Thou shalt not bear false witness;
The young man said, "I have observed all these. What more is wanting?"
But hearing these words the young man went away sorrowing: for he had much property.
These words utterly amazed the disciples, and they asked, "Who then can be saved?"
and to these he said, Go ye -- also ye -- to the vineyard, and whatever may be righteous I will give you;
saying: These last have worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day, and the heat.
He said to her: What do you wish? She said to him: Command that these two sons of mine may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom.
"You shall drink my cup," said Jesus, "but it is not for me to grant seats at my right hand and at my left; these belong to the men for whom they have been destined by my Father."
If anyone says something to you, tell them, 'The Lord needs these animals,' and he will immediately send them.
This happened in fulfillment of these words in the Prophet--
but when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonders that He wrought, and the children crying out in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were vexed to the heart, and said to Him, Dost thou hear what these say?
and they said to him: Do you not hear what these say? And Jesus said to them: Yes; have you never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
And after he had come into the temple, the chief priests and elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said: By what authority do you these things? And who gave you this authority?
Jesus answered and said to them: I also will ask you one thing, which if you will tell me, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.
And they answered and said to Jesus: We know not. And he said to them: Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
"Which of these two did the will of his father?" "The last," they replied. "I tell you truly," said Jesus, "that the tax-gatherers and harlots are going into the kingdom of heaven before you!
Again he sent another party of servants more numerous than the first; and these they treated in the same manner.
Now, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to these vinedressers?"
They say to him, He will miserably destroy these wicked, and let out the vineyard to other farmers, who will give back to him the fruits in their seasons.
After listening to these parables, the Chief Priests and the Pharisees saw that it was about them that he was speaking;
Then the king, when he heard it, was incensed: and sending out his armies, destroyed these murderers, and burnt down their city.
