The Jews said to themselves, "Where is he going, that we will not find him? Is he off to the Dispersion among the Greeks, to teach the Greeks?
Now on the last day, the great day, of the festival, Jesus stood and cried aloud, "If anyone is athirst, let him come to me and drink;
(he meant by this the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive: ??as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus had not been glorified yet).
some wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
Then the attendants went back to the high priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why have you not brought him with you?"
Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him?
Nicodemus, one of their number (the same who had come to him before), said to them,
They answered him, "And are you from Galilee, too? Search and you will see that no prophet ever springs from Galilee."
Early in the morning he returned to the temple, the people all came to him, and he sat down and taught them.
they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.
(They said this to test him, in order to get a charge against him.) Jesus stooped down, and began to write with his finger on the ground;
And on hearing what he said, they went away one by one, beginning with the older men, till Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.
So the Pharisees said to him, "You are testifying to yourself; your evidence is not valid."
These words he spoke in the treasury, as he was teaching in the temple, but no one arrested him, because his time had not come yet.
I have a great deal to say about you and many a judgment to pass upon you; but he who sent me is true, and so I tell the world what I have learned from him."
He who sent me is at my side; he has not left me alone; for I always do what pleases him."
So Jesus addressed the Jews who had believed him, saying, "If you abide by what I say, you are really disciples of mine:
They answered him, "Abraham is our father." "If you are Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then do as Abraham did;
You do the deeds of your father." They said to him, "We are no bastards: we have one father, even God."
Said Jesus, "If God were your father, you would love me, for I came here from God; I did not come of my own accord, I was sent by him.
You belong to your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires; he was a slayer of men from the very beginning, and he has no place in the truth because there is no truth in him: when he tells a lie, he is expressing his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
The Jews said to him, "Now we are sure you are mad. Abraham is dead, and so are all the prophets; and you declare, 'If anyone holds to what I say, he will never taste death'!
but you do not understand him. I know him. Were I to say, 'I do not know him,' I would be a liar like yourselves; but I do know him and I hold to his word.
Then said the Jews to him, "You are not fifty years old, and Abraham has seen you?"
At this they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus concealed himself and made his way out of the temple.
and his disciples asked him, "Rabbi, for whose sin ??for his own or for his parents' ??was he born blind?"
Jesus replied, "Neither for his own sin nor for his parents' ??it was to let the work of God be illustrated in him.
Some said, "It is"; others said, "No, but it is like him." He said, "I am the man."
They brought him before the Pharisees, this man who had once been blind.
So the Pharisees asked him again how he had regained his sight, and he told them, "He smeared some clay on my eyes, and I washed them, and now I can see."
So they asked the blind man once more, "What have you to say about him, for opening your eyes?" The man replied, "I say he is a prophet."
(His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed him to be Christ should be excommunicated.
Then they stormed at him: "You are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses!
They retorted, "And so you would teach us ??you, born in utter depravity!" Then they expelled him.
Jesus heard that they had expelled him, and on meeting him he said, "You believe in the Son of man?"
"Who is that, sir?" said the man, "tell me, that I may believe in him."
"You have seen him," Jesus said, "he is talking to you."
He said, "I do believe, Lord" ??and he worshipped him.
On hearing this the Pharisees who were beside him asked, "And are we blind?"
The gate-keeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice; he calls his sheep by name and leads them out.
When he has brought all his sheep outside, he goes in front of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice;
they will not follow a stranger, they will run from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers."
A number of them said, "He is mad. Why listen to him?"
So the Jews gathered round him and asked, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."
Once more they tried to arrest him, but he escaped their hands
and many came to him, saying, "John did not perform any Sign, but all he ever said about this man was true."
so the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is ill."
but if one walks during the night he does stumble, for the light is not in him."
This he said, then added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; I am going to waken him."
and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, that you may believe. Come now, let us go to him."
Whereupon Thomas (called 'the Twin') said to his fellow-disciples, "Let us go too, let us die along with him!"
Then Martha, hearing of the arrival of Jesus, went out to meet him, while Mary sat at home.
So, on hearing this, Mary rose hurriedly and went to him.
Jesus had not entered the village yet, he was still at the spot where Martha had met him.
But when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she dropped at his feet, crying, "Had you been here, Lord, my brother would not have died."
"Where have you laid him?" he asked. They answered, "Come and see, sir."
Whereupon the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" ??37 though some of them asked, "Could he not have prevented him from dying, when he could open a blind man's eyes?"
Out came the dead man, his feet and hands swathed in bandages, and his face tied up with a towel. Jesus said, "Untie him, and let him move."
Now a number of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and who witnessed what he had done, believed in him.
If we let him alone, like this, everybody will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and suppress our holy Place and our nation."
(The high priests and the Pharisees had given orders that they were to be informed, if anyone found out where he was, so that they might arrest him.)
They gave a supper for him there; Martha waited on him, and Lazarus was among those who reclined at table beside him.
One of his disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was to betray him), said,
since it was owing to him that a number of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
and taking palm-branches they went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed be he who comes in the Lord's name, the king of Israel!"
(His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered this had been written of him and had happened to him.)
Now the people who were with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead, testified to it;
and that was why the crowd went out to meet him, because they heard he had performed this Sign.
Then said the Pharisees to one another, "You see, you can do nothing! Look, the world has gone after him."
they came to Philip of Bethsaida in Galilee and appealed to him, saying, "Sir, we want to see Jesus."
If anyone serves me, let him follow me, and where I am, there shall my servant be also: if anyone serves me, my Father will honour him.
When they heard the sound, the people standing by said it had thundered; others said, "An angel spoke to him."
Now for all the Signs he had performed before them, they did not believe in him ??38 that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: Lord, who has believed what they heard from us, And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
(Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke of him.)
Still, a number even of the authorities believed in him, though they would not confess it on account of the Pharisees, in case of being excommunicated;
And Jesus cried aloud, "He who believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me,
If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, it is not I who judge him; for I have not come to judge the world but to save the world.
He who rejects me and will not receive my words has indeed a judge: the word I have spoken will judge him on the last day,
Now before the passover festival Jesus knew the time had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. He had loved his own in this world and he loved them to the end;
so at supper, knowing that though the devil had suggested to Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,
he rose from table, laid aside his robe, and tied a towel round him,
then poured water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, wiping them with the towel he had tied round him.
Jesus answered him, "You do not understand just now what I am doing, but you will understand it later on."
Truly, truly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than he who sent him.
(Truly, truly I tell you, he who receives anyone I send receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.)"
As one of his disciples was reclining on his breast ??he was the favourite of Jesus ??24 Peter nodded to him, saying, "Tell us who he means."
and when he took the bread, at that moment Satan entered him. Then Jesus told him, "Be quick with what you have to do."
(None of those at table understood why he said this to him;
some of them thought that as Judas kept the money-box, Jesus told him to buy what they needed for the festival or to give something to the poor.)
When he had gone out, Jesus said, Now at last the Son of man is glorified, and in him God is glorified: [if God is glorified in him,]
God will glorify him in Himself and glorify him at once.
Jesus said to him, "I am the real and living way: no one comes to the Father except by means of me.
If you knew me, you would know my Father too. You know him now and you have seen him."
