It is the object of this article to give a brief account of St. John's teaching as contained in his Gospel and Epistles. Without prejudging in any way the authorship of the Apocalypse, it will be more convenient that the doctrine of that book should be considered separately. Enough if it be said here that, despite the obvious and very striking difference in the form and style of the book, the underlying similarities between it and those to be now considered are no less remarkable. Careful students, not blinded by the symbolism and other peculiarities of the Revelation, who have concentrated attention upon its main ideas and principles, have come to the conclusion that if it did not proceed from the same pen that wrote the Gospel and Epistles, it belongs to the same school of Christian thought. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and he said, "Look! He is the Lamb of God who is to take away the world's sin.
And just as Moses in the desert lifted the serpent on the pole, the Son of Man must be lifted up,

Whoever persistently rejects me and refuses to accept my teachings has something to judge him -- the very message I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

It is what existed from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our own eyes, what we have beheld, what our own hands have touched, about the very message of life --
And this is the message that we have heard from Him and now announce to you: God is light, and there is no darkness at all in Him.
But if we continue to live in the light, just as He is in the light, we have unbroken fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son continues to cleanse us from every sin.
And He is Himself the atoning sacrifice for our sins; and not for ours alone, but also for the whole world.
Whoever claims to be in the light, and yet continues to hate his brother is still in darkness. Whoever continues to love his brother is always in the light, and he is no hindrance to others.

And now, dear children, I repeat, you must continue to live in union with Him, so that if He is unveiled, we may have unshaken confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame when He comes. If you know that He is upright, you must know that everyone who practices uprightness is born of Him.
See what wonderful love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called God's children, and that is what we are! This is why the world does not know what we are, because it has never come to know Him. Dearly beloved, we are now God's children, but what we are going to be has not been unveiled. We know that if it is unveiled, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.
Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
Whoever practices sin belongs to the devil, because the devil has practiced sin from the beginning. This is why the Son of God appeared, to undo the devil's works. No one who is born of God makes a practice of sinning, because the God-given life-principle continues to live in him, and so he cannot practice sinning, because he is born of God.

We must not be like Cain who belonged to the evil one and butchered his brother. And why did he butcher him? Because his own actions were wicked and his brother's upright.

In this way is seen the true love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
So we know by experience and trust the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever continues to love continues in union with God and God in union with him. Our love attains perfection through our having perfect confidence about the day of judgment, because here in this world we are living as He did.
If anyone says, "I love God," and yet habitually hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves His child.
