'Wine' in the Bible
Your navel is a rounded bowl;it never lacks mixed wine.Your waist is a mound of wheatsurrounded by lilies.
Your mouth is like fine wine—W flowing smoothly for my love,gliding past my lips and teeth!
I would lead you, I would take you,to the house of my mother who taught me.I would give you spiced wine to drinkfrom my pomegranate juice.
Woe to those who rise early in the morningin pursuit of beer,who linger into the evening,inflamed by wine.
At their feasts they have lyre, harp,tambourine, flute, and wine.They do not perceive the Lord’s actions,and they do not see the work of His hands.
Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine,who are fearless at mixing beer,
But look: joy and gladness,butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep,eating of meat, and drinking of wine—“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
The new wine mourns;the vine withers.All the carousers now groan.
They no longer sing and drink wine;beer is bitter to those who drink it.
In the streets they cry for wine.All joy grows dark;earth’s rejoicing goes into exile.
The Lord of Hosts will prepare a feastfor all the peoples on this mountain—a feast of aged wine, choice meat, finely aged wine.
Woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards,and to the fading flower of its beautiful splendor,which is on the summit above the rich valley.Woe to those overcome with wine.
These also stagger because of wineand stumble under the influence of beer:priest and prophet stagger because of beer,they are confused by wine.They stumble because of beer,they are muddled in their visions,they stumble in their judgments.
Stop and be astonished;blind yourselves and be blind!They are drunk, but not with wine;they stagger, but not with beer.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own land—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,and they will be drunk with their own bloodas with sweet wine.Then all flesh will knowthat I, Yahweh, am your Savior,and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
So listen to this, afflictedand drunken one—but not with wine.
“Come, everyone who is thirsty,come to the waters;and you without money,come, buy, and eat!Come, buy wine and milkwithout money and without cost!
“Come, let me get some wine,let’s guzzle some beer;and tomorrow will be like today,only far better!” >
The Lord has sworn with His right handand His strong arm:I will no longer give your grainto your enemies for food,and foreigners will not drink your new wineyou have labored for.
For those who gather grain will eat itand praise the Lord,and those who harvest the grapes will drink the winein My holy courts.
The Lord says this:As the new wine is found in a bunch of grapes,and one says, ‘Don’t destroy it,for there’s some good in it,’so I will act because of My servantsand not destroy them all.
But you who abandon the Lord,who forget My holy mountain,who prepare a table for Fortuneand fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny,
“Say this to them: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Every jar should be filled with wine. Then they will respond to you, ‘Don’t we know that every jar should be filled with wine?’
Concerning the prophets:My heart is broken within me,and all my bones tremble.I have become like a drunkard,like a man overcome by wine,because of the Lord,because of His holy words.
This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take this cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and make all the nations I am sending you to, drink from it.
They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion;they will be radiant with joybecause of the Lord’s goodness,because of the grain, the new wine, the fresh oil,and because of the young of the flocks and herds.Their life will be like an irrigated garden,and they will no longer grow weak from hunger.
“Go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them to one of the chambers of the temple of the Lord to offer them a drink of wine.”
I set jars filled with wine and some cups before the sons of the house of the Rechabites and said to them, “Drink wine!”
But they replied, “We do not drink wine, for Jonadab, son of our ancestor Rechab, commanded: ‘You and your sons must never drink wine.
We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab, son of our ancestor Rechab, in all he commanded us. So we haven’t drunk wine our whole life—we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters.
“The words of Jonadab, son of Rechab, have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk to this very day because they have obeyed their ancestor’s command. But I have spoken to you time and time again, and you have not obeyed Me!
As for me, I am going to live in Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us. As for you, gather wine, summer fruit, and oil, place them in your storage jars, and live in the cities you have captured.”
they all returned from all the places where they had been banished and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and harvested a great amount of wine and summer fruit.
Moab has been left quiet since his youth,settled like wine on its dregs.He hasn’t been poured from one container to anotheror gone into exile.So his taste has remained the same,and his aroma hasn’t changed.
Joy and celebration are taken from the fertile fieldand from the land of Moab.I have stopped the flow of wine from the winepresses;no one will tread with shouts of joy.The shouting is not a shout of joy.
Babylon was a gold cup in the Lord’s hand,making the whole earth drunk.The nations drank her wine;therefore, the nations go mad.
ל LamedThey cry out to their mothers:Where is the grain and wine?as they faint like the woundedin the streets of the city,as their lives fade awayin the arms of their mothers.

Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them, you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand. But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in His hand and who controls the whole course of your life.
I didn’t eat any rich food, no meat or wine entered my mouth, and I didn’t put any oil on my body until the three weeks were over.
She does not recognizethat it is I who gave her the grain,the new wine, and the oil.I lavished silver and gold on her,which they used for Baal.
Therefore, I will take back My grain in its timeand My new wine in its season;I will take away My wool and linen,which were to cover her nakedness.

Promiscuity, wine, and new winetake away one’s understanding.

The people will return and live beneath his shade.They will grow grainand blossom like the vine.His renown will be like the wine of Lebanon.
Wake up, you drunkards, and weep;wail, all you wine drinkers,because of the sweet wine,for it has been taken from your mouth.
The fields are destroyed;the land grieves;indeed, the grain is destroyed;the new wine is dried up;and the olive oil fails.
Who knows? He may turn and relentand leave a blessing behind Him,so you can offer grain and wineto the Lord your God.
The Lord answered His people:Look, I am about to send yougrain, new wine, and olive oil.You will be satiated with them,and I will no longer make youa disgrace among the nations.
The threshing floors will be full of grain,and the vats will overflowwith new wine and olive oil.
They cast lots for My people;they bartered a boy for a prostituteand sold a girl for wine to drink.
In that daythe mountains will drip with sweet wine,and the hills will flow with milk.All the streams of Judah will flow with water,and a spring will issue from the Lord’s house,watering the Valley of Acacias.
They stretch out beside every altaron garments taken as collateral,and in the house of their God,they drink wine obtained through fines.
But you made the Nazirites drink wineand commanded the prophets,“Do not prophesy.”
Therefore, because you trample on the poorand exact a grain tax from him,you will never live in the houses of cut stoneyou have built;you will never drink the winefrom the lush vineyardsyou have planted.
They drink wine by the bowlfuland anoint themselves with the finest oilsbut do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Hear this! The days are coming—this is the Lord’s declaration—when the plowman will overtake the reaperand the one who treads grapes,the sower of seed.The mountains will drip with sweet wine,and all the hills will flow with it.
I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel.They will rebuild and occupy ruined cities,plant vineyards and drink their wine,make gardens and eat their produce.
If a man of wind comesand invents lies:“I will preach to you about wine and beer,”he would be just the preacher for this people!
You will sow but not reap;you will press olivesbut not anoint yourself with oil;and you will tread grapesbut not drink the wine.

If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?”The priests answered, “No.”
The Lord of Hosts will defend them.They will consume and conquer with slingstones;they will drink and be rowdy as if with wine.They will be as full as the sprinkling basin,like those at the corners of the altar.
How lovely and beautiful they will be!Grain will make the young men flourish,and new wine, the young women.
Ephraim will be like a warrior,and their hearts will be glad as if with wine.Their children will see it and be glad;their hearts will rejoice in Yahweh.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. But they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
they gave Him wine mixed with gall to drink. But when He tasted it, He would not drink it.
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, and offered Him a drink.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”
They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.
Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, offered Him a drink, and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take Him down!”
For he will be great in the sight of the Lordand will never drink wine or beer.He will be filled with the Holy Spiritwhile still in his mother’s womb.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined.
And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.’”
For John the Baptist did not come eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’
He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
The soldiers also mocked Him. They came offering Him sour wine
When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother told Him, “They don’t have any wine.”
When the chief servant tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom
and told him, “Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people have drunk freely, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.”
Then He went again to Cana of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.
A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop and held it up to His mouth.
When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
It is a noble thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything that makes your brother stumble.
