And the high priest stood up [and] said to him, "Do you reply nothing? What are these [people] testifying against you?"
The chief priests, picking up the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put these in the treasury [of the temple], because it is the price of blood.”
Then it was that these words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled-- 'They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him who was valued, whom some of the people of Israel valued,
But the governor asked them, "Which one of these two men do you want me to release to you?" And they answered, "Barabbas."
Then about three in the afternoon Jesus called out in a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama, sabachthani? [Note: These words were spoken in the commonly used Aramaic language], which mean, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Among these was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Now while these women were on their way, some of the guards entered the city and began telling the leading priests everything that had happened.
[Then] go on teaching them [i.e., these new converts] to obey everything I have commanded you and my presence will be with you always, even to the end of the age.
And going on thence a little, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, and these were in the ship repairing the trawl-nets;
Now some of the experts in the law were sitting there, turning these things over in their minds:
And Jesus, having knowledge in his spirit of their thoughts, said to them, Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?
And it happened that Jesus was having a meal at Levi's house and many tax collectors and worldly people sat down with Him and His disciples, for many [of these kinds of people] became His followers.
So he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Stand up among all these people."
And the Pharisees immediately went out and conferred with the Herodians against Jesus, plotting how they could kill Him. [Note: These Herodians were members of a political party favoring King Herod]
with power to drive out the demons. These were the twelve he appointed:
these were Simon, whom he sirnam'd Peter, James the son of Zebedee,
and James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, (and He added to these the name "Boanerges," that is, "sons of thunder");
Jesus said all this because these experts in the law of Moses had been saying, "He has an evil spirit in him."
And he said to them, To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but to them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way-side, where the word is sown;
And these are they by the wayside, where the word is planted; and when they have given ear, the Evil One comes straight away and takes away the word which has been planted in them.
And in the same way, these are they who are planted on the stones, who, when the word has come to their ears, straight away take it with joy;
And others are those planted among the thorns; these are they who have given ear to the word,
And these are they who were planted on the good earth; such as give ear to the word, and take it into their hearts, and give fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundred times as much.
And with many parables such as these he was speaking the word to them, as they were able to hear [it].
And when the Sabbath day had come, he was teaching in the Synagogue; and a number of people hearing him were surprised, saying, From where did this man get these things? and, What is the wisdom given to this man, and what are these works of power done by his hands?
is not he the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses, of Juda and Simon? are not these his sisters, who are here with us? and they were scandalized at him.
And king Herod had news of him, because his name was on the lips of all; and he said, John the Baptist has come back from the dead, and for this reason these powers are working in him.
But the people saw them going and, since many recognized them, these people ran on ahead of them from all the [surrounding] towns.
And he said, Well did Isaiah say of you, you false ones: These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
For, neglecting the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, the immersion of pitchers and cups; and many other things like these you do.
and so you set aside what God has said by what you have handed down. You have many other practices like these."
There is nothing entering into a man from without, which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, these are they that defile the man.
because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and passes away ejected from him?" By these words Jesus pronounced all kinds of food clean.
From within, from the heart of man, proceed evil purposes??22 fornication, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, wantonness, envy, slander, arrogance, reckless folly??23 all these wicked things issue from within and defile a man."
greed, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, abusiveness, arrogance, folly??23 all these evils come from inside, and they pollute a man."
All these evil things come from inside, and make the man unclean.
I have pity for these people because they have been with me now three days, and have no food;
And his disciples said in answer, How will it be possible to get enough bread for these men here in a waste place?
And they had a few small fish, and [after] giving thanks for them, he said to set these [before them] also.
The Pharisees and Sadducees [i.e., these were strict sects of the Jewish religion], came out and began disputing with Jesus, asking for a [supernatural] sign from Him, [in an attempt] to test Him.
But He sighed in spirit and said, "Why do the people of these times ask for a spectacular sign? I solemnly say, no sign at all will be given them."
And he said to them: Verily I say to you, There are some of these standing here who shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God come in power.
And they kept these words in mind, questioning one another what rising from the dead might mean.
"Whoever welcomes one of the young children such as these in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but the one who sent me."
And whoever is a cause of trouble to one of these little ones who have faith in me, it would be better for him if a great stone was put round his neck and he was dropped into the sea.
Then some [parents] were bringing [their] little children to Jesus so He could touch them [i.e., to bestow a blessing on them], but His disciples spoke harshly to these parents [for doing this].
When Jesus saw it, He was indignant, and said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them from it, for to such as these the kingdom of God belongs.
And he said to him, Master, all these laws I have kept from the time when I was young.
But at these words
The disciples were astonished at these words. But again Jesus said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
but it is not for me to grant seats at my right or my left hand ??these belong to the men for whom they have been destined."
And when they [all] approached Jerusalem, and came close to Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives [Note: These small villages were about two miles east of Jerusalem], He sent two of His disciples on ahead,
at the same time he explained himself to them in these words, is it not written, "my house shall be called a house of prayer to all nations?" but ye have made it a harbour for thieves.
And they come again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders come to him and say to him, By what authority dost thou these things?
And they said to him, By what authority do you do these things? or who gave you authority to do these things?
And Jesus said to them, I will put to you one question; give me an answer, and I will say by what authority I do these things.
And they said in answer to Jesus, We have no idea. And Jesus said to them, And I will not say to you by what authority I do these things.
Then the man sent another, and that one they killed. So it was with many other servants. Some of these they beat, and others they killed.
but these husbandmen said to one another, this is the heir, come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be our own.
What then will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and give his vineyard to others.
and these, when they came, said to Him, Master, we know that thou art a man of truth, and carest for no man; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to pay tribute to Cesar, or not? should we give, or should we not give?
And, when they had brought it, he asked: "Whose head and title are these?" "The Emperor's," they said;
"Teacher, Moses wrote to us [Deut. 25:5] that if a man's brother dies, leaving his widow behind without having had any children, his brother should marry his widow and father children by her. These children would then be considered his [dead] brother's.
[Now] there were [these] seven brothers; the first one got married, but when he died he left no children behind.
The second is this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. There is no other law greater than these.
and to love him with one's whole heart, one's whole understanding, and one's whole strength, and to love one's neighbor as one's self is far more than all these burnt-offerings and sacrifices."
Who take away the property of widows, and before the eyes of men make long prayers; these will be judged more hardly.
A poor widow came and threw in two small copper coins [Note: These two coins each amounted to about ten minutes' worth of a farm laborer's pay, or about one dollar in 1994]. The total she gave was equivalent to a larger coin [i.e., worth twice as much].
And He called His disciples to Him and said, "I solemnly say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all these others who have been putting money into the collection-box.
Now as Jesus was going out of the temple courts, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look at these tremendous stones and buildings!"
And Jesus said to him, Do you see these great buildings? there is not one stone here resting on another which will not be overturned.
Say when these things will be, and what will be the sign when these things are all about to be done.
And when you have news of wars and talk of wars, do not be troubled; these things have to be, but it is still not the end.
Nation will go to war with nation, and kingdom with kingdom: there will be earth-shocks in different places; there will be times when there is no food; these things are the first of the troubles.
A beginning of birth-pangs, are these things. But be, ye, taking heed, unto yourselves: they will deliver you up into high-councils, and, in synagogues, shall ye be beaten, - and, before governors and kings, shall ye be set, for my sake, for a witness unto them.
"As soon, however, as you see the Abomination of Desolation standing where he ought not" --let the reader observe these words--"then let those in Judaea escape to the hills;
For these days shall bring tribulation, such as the like hath never been from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, and never shall be more.
and the stars will be falling from the sky and the forces of the heavens will be shaken. [Note: From the description of these same events in Luke 21:25-26, it is possible that this is figurative language for great calamities happening on earth].
Even so, when you see these things taking place, you may be certain that he is near, even at the doors.
Truly, I say to you, This generation will not come to an end till all these things are complete.
And verily I say unto you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, what this woman has done shall be also spoken of for a memorial of her.
And when they [i.e., the leading priests] realized this, they were very pleased and promised to give him money. So, Judas began looking for a convenient way to turn Jesus over to these Jewish leaders.
And the high priest got up in the middle of them, and said to Jesus, Do you say nothing in answer? what is it which these say against you?
But He kept silent and made no answer at all. So the high priest again questioned Him in these words, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
Then at three o'clock Jesus shouted in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama, sabachthani?" [Note: These words were in the commonly spoken Aramaic language], which being interpreted, means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
These women had ministered to Jesus' needs when they followed Him from Galilee. Others watching were many women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.
And when these heard that he was alive and had been seen of her, they disbelieved it.
And after these things he was seen in another form by two of them, while they were walking on their way into the country.
And these went [and] reported [it] to the others, and they did not believe them.
And these signs will be with those who have faith: in my name they will send out evil spirits; and they will make use of new languages;
So then the Lord Jesus, after he had said these words to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.
And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the
Inasmuch as many took it in hand to present a history concerning these things which have been fulfilled among us,
[that is, people] who were ministers of the word and original eyewitnesses [of these events], and who passed them on to us; [and since]
And, therefore, I also, since I have investigated all these events with great care from their very beginning, have resolved to write a connected history of them for you,
And the angel, answering, said, I am Gabriel, whose place is before God; I have been sent to say these words to you and to give you this good news.
Now, see, you will be without voice or language till the day when these things come about, because you had not faith in my words, which will have effect at the right time.
