Then Festus said: “King Agrippa and all men present with us, you see this man about whom the whole Jewish community has appealed to me, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he should not live any longer.
But, in my opinion, there is no cause of death in him, and as he himself has made a request to be judged by Caesar, I have said that I would send him.
And, Agrippa, to Paul, said - It is permitted thee, on thine own behalf, to be speaking. Then Paul, stretching forth his hand, went on to make his defence.
"I count myself fortunate, King Agrippa," said he, "that it is before you that I can defend myself today against all the charges which the Jews have preferred against me,
When we all fell to the ground I heard a voice speaking in the Hebrew [i.e., Aramaic] language. [It said], 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? You are only hurting yourself by kicking against the spurs [i.e., opposing the work of God].'
And, I, said - Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said - I, am Jesus, whom, thou, art persecuting!
And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But rise and stand upon thy feet; for I have appeared to thee for this purpose, to ordain thee a minister and a witness, both of the things which thou hast seen,
To this very day, I have obtained help that comes from God, and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing else than what the prophets and Moses said would take place
And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.
But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.
And, Agrippa, said unto Paul - Almost, art thou persuading, me, to become a, Christian!
And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.
When he had said this, the king, the governour, Bernice, and all that were seated near them, rose up: and being retired,
and when they had left they talked with each other and said, “This man is doing nothing that deserves death or chains.”
And, Agrippa, unto Festus, said - This man might have been released, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.
Now, when it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they proceeded to deliver Paul, and certain other prisoners, unto a centurion by name Julius, of an Augustan band.
And, going on board a ship of Adramittium, about to sail unto the places along the coast of Asia, we put to sea, there being with us, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica;
And thence, having set sail, we sailed under Cyprus, because of the winds being contrary,
And there the under-captain found a ship of Alexandria ready to sail into Italy, and put us therein,
For several days we made very little sail, and having scarce got sight of Cnidus, the wind being against us, we bore away between Salmone and Crete:
And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
But the centurion paid attention to the captain and the owner of the ship rather than to what Paul said.
Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided to set sail from there, hoping somehow to reach Phoenix, a harbor on Crete
And, a south wind blowing softly, supposing they had secured their purpose, weighing anchor, they began to sail close in shore along Crete.
Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.
But, when they had been, long without food, then, Paul, standing in the midst of them, said - Ye ought, indeed, Sir! yielding to me, not to have sailed away from Crete, to get this damage and loss. --
for an angel of that God, whose minister I am, and whom I serve, this night appear'd to me, and said, Paul, be not afraid:
Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
Wherefore be of good courage, men, for I believe God that thus it shall be, as it has been said to me.
Paul said unto the centurion, and unto the soldiers - Except, these, abide in the ship, ye yourselves, cannot be saved!
while they were waiting for day, Paul advis'd the whole company to take some refreshment: "these fourteen days, said he, you have been very abstemious, and not made a meal:
And, having said these things, and taken a loaf, he gave thanks unto God before all, and, breaking it, began to eat.
accordingly, having heaved in their anchors, they drove with the sea, then loos'd the helm, bois'd the mizen-sail to wind, and made to shore:
When the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “This man is probably a murderer, and though he has escaped the sea, Justice
They expected that he would swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after they waited a long time and saw nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
who also, with many honours, honoured us, and, when we were about to sail, put on board such things as we might need.
After three months we set sail in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered at the island, with the Twin Brothers
After three days he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them: “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
And, they, said unto him - We, have neither received letters concerning thee from the Jews, nor hath anyone of the brethren who hath arrived reported or spoken concerning thee, anything ill.
Some were persuaded by what he said, but others did not believe.
and, not being, agreed, among themselves, they began to leave, - Paul having said one thing - Well, did, the Holy Spirit, speak through Isaiah the prophet, unto your fathers,
when He said,
You will listen and listen,
yet never understand;
and you will look and look,
yet never perceive.
[After he said these things, the Jews departed, while engaging in a prolonged debate among themselves.]
For in it there is the revelation of the righteousness of God from faith to faith: as it is said in the holy Writings, The man who does righteousness will be living by his faith.
For the name of God is shamed among the Gentiles because of you, as it is said in the holy Writings.
In no way: but let God be true, though every man is seen to be untrue; as it is said in the Writings, That your words may be seen to be true, and you may be seen to be right when you are judged.
But if the righteousness of God is supported by our wrongdoing what is to be said? is it wrong for God to be angry (as men may say)?
Let us not do evil so that good may come (a statement which we are falsely said by some to have made), because such behaviour will have its right punishment.
As it is said in the holy Writings, There is not one who does righteousness;
Their throat is like an open place of death; with their tongues they have said what is not true: the poison of snakes is under their lips:
Now we know that everything said in the Law is addressed to those who are under its authority, in order that every mouth may be closed, and the whole world become liable to the judgment of God.
He said [Psa. 32:1ff], "Those people whose ungodly deeds are forgiven [by God] and whose sins are covered over, are [truly] blessed.
(As it is said in the holy Writings, I have made you a father of a number of nations) before him in whom he had faith, that is, God, who gives life to the dead, and to whom the things which are not are as if they were.

But if I do that which I desire not to do, it can no longer be said that it is I who do it, but the sin which has its home within me does it.
It is *in hope* that we have been saved. But an object of hope is such no longer when it is present to view; for when a man has a thing before his eyes, how can he be said to hope for it?
As it is said in the holy Writings, Because of you we are put to death every day; we are like sheep ready for destruction.
neither are they who are the race of Abraham, all children: but 'tis said, "in Isaac shall thy posterity be called."
For this is what the promise said: "When I come back at this time next year, Sarah will have a son."
And not only this, but Rebecca also being with child by one, by our father Isaac??11 for the children not yet being born, nor having done any thing good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might continue, not of works but of him that calls,??12 it was said to her that the older shall serve the younger;
(for they being not yet born, neither having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to choice, might remain; not of works, but of Him who is calling,) it was said to her --
It was said unto her - The elder, shall serve the younger;
Even as it is said, I had love for Jacob, but for Esau I had hate.
What may we say then? is God not upright? let it not be said.
For He said to Moses [Ex. 33:19], "I will show pity to whomever I want, and I will show mercy to whomever I want."
And from this we learn that everything is dependent not on man's will or endeavour, but upon God who has mercy. For the Scripture said to Pharaoh,
for 'tis said in scripture to Pharaoh, "even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth."
As he also said in Hosea. Those who were not my people I will call "my people," And her "beloved" who was not beloved;
And it shall be - in the place where it was said to them- not my people are, ye! there, shall they be called - Sons of a Living God.
And, even as Isaiah hath before said, - If, the Lord of hosts, had not left us a seed, as Sodom, had we become, and, as Gomorrha, had we been made like.
As it is said, See, I am putting in Zion a stone causing a fall, and a rock in the way: but he who has faith in him will not be put to shame.
Moses said that anyone who carried out the uprightness the Law prescribed would find life through it.
Because it is said in the holy Writings, Whoever has faith in him will not be shamed.
And how will there be preachers if they are not sent? As it is said, How beautiful are the feet of those who give the glad news of good things.
And yet they did not all hearken to the good news; for Isaiah said, Lord, who hath believed our message?
But I ask, “Did Israel not understand?” First, Moses said:
of those who are not a nation;
I will make you angry by a nation
that lacks understanding.
Then Isaiah boldly said [Isa. 45:1], "I [i.e., God] was found by a people [i.e., the Gentiles] who were not looking for me. I became known to people who were not asking for me."
But of Israel he said: "All day long I have held out my hands to a people that is disobedient and obstinate."
I say then, Did not God put away His people? Let it not be said! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
God has not put away the people of his selection. Or have you no knowledge of what is said about Elijah in the holy Writings? how he says words to God against Israel,
but what said the oracle to him? "I have reserved to my self seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal."
As it was said in the holy Writings, God gave them a spirit of sleep, eyes which might not see, and ears which have no hearing, to this day.
And David said: "Let their food become a snare and a trap to them, their pitfall and retribution;
Well said! They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand firm because of faith. Do not think arrogant [thoughts], but be afraid.
And so all Israel will get salvation: as it is said in the holy Writings, There will come out of Zion the One who makes free; by him wrongdoing will be taken away from Jacob:
Do not give punishment for wrongs done to you, dear brothers, but give way to the wrath of God; for it is said in the holy Writings, Punishment is mine, I will give reward, says the Lord.
For it is said in the holy Writings, By my life, says the Lord, to me every knee will be bent, and every tongue will give worship to God.
For Christ did not give pleasure to himself, but, as it is said, The bitter words of those who were angry with you came on me.
And so that the Gentiles might give glory to God for his mercy; as it is said, For this reason I will give praise to you among the Gentiles, and I will make a song to your name.
Again it says,
But as it is said in the holy Writings, They will see, to whom the news of him had not been given, and those to whose ears it had not come will have knowledge.
Then having completed and sealed this fruit unto them, I will sail away for Spain by you;
For such people are not servants of the Lord Christ, but of their stomachs; and by their smooth and well-said words the hearts of those who have no knowledge of evil are tricked.
So that, as it is said in the holy Writings, Whoever has a desire for glory, let his glory be in the Lord.
what I said, what I preached, did not rest on the plausible arguments of 'wisdom' but on the proof supplied by the Spirit and its power,
For the wisdom of this world is foolish before God. As it is said in the holy Writings, He who takes the wise in their secret designs:
Now I have applied what has been said above to myself and Apollos, to teach you ... that you are not to be puffed up with rivalry over one teacher as against another.
When evil things are said about us we give gentle answers: we are made as the unclean things of the world, as that for which no one has any use, even till now.
