'Brother' in the Bible
Now [as he] was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, throwing a casting net into the sea (for they were fishermen).
And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the [son] of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.
But I say to you that everyone who is angry at his brother will be subject to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, 'Stupid fool!' will be subject to the council, and whoever says, 'Obstinate fool!' will be subject to fiery hell.
Therefore if you present your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
leave your gift there before the altar and first go be reconciled to your brother, and then come [and] present your gift.
Or how will you say to your brother, 'Allow [me] to remove the speck from your eye,' and behold, the beam of wood [is] in your [own] eye?
Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother,
"And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father [his] children, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death,
For whoever does the will of my Father [who is] in heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother."
For Herod, [after] arresting John, bound him and put [him] in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
And after six days Jesus took along Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
"Now if your brother sins against you, go correct him between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.
Then Peter came up to him [and] said, "Lord, how many times will my brother sin against me and I will forgive him? Up to seven times?"
So also my heavenly Father will do to you, unless each of you forgives his brother from your hearts!"
saying, "Teacher, Moses said if someone dies without having children, his brother is to marry his wife and {father} descendants for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first died [after] getting married, and [because he] did not have descendants, he left his wife to his brother.
And [as he] was passing by along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, casting [a net] into the sea (for they were fishermen).
And going on a little [farther], he saw James the [son] of Zebedee and his brother John, and they [were] in the boat mending the nets.
and James the [son] of Zebedee and John the brother of James (and he gave to them the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder"),
For whoever does the will of God, this person is my brother and sister and mother."
And he did not allow anyone to follow along with him except Peter and James and John, the brother of James.
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they were offended by him.
For Herod himself had sent [and] arrested John and bound him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if someone's brother dies and he leaves behind a wife and does not leave a child, that his brother should take the wife and {father} descendants for his brother.
And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father [his] child, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, [when] Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,
Simon (whom he also named Peter) and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew,
How are you able to say to your brother, "Brother, allow [me] to remove the speck [that is] in your eye," [while] you yourself do not see the beam of wood in your [own] eye? Hypocrite! First remove the beam of wood from your [own] eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck [that is] in your brother's eye!
Now someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me!"
And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has gotten him back healthy.'
But it was necessary to celebrate and to rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead, and is alive, and was lost, and is found!'"
"Be concerned about yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us if someone's brother dies having a wife, and this man is childless, that his brother should take the wife and {father} descendants for his brother.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.
This one first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is translated "Christ").
One of his disciples, Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,
(Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
So many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary in order to console them concerning their brother.)
So Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was [and] saw him, fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
So Ananias departed and entered into the house, and placing [his] hands on him, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me so that you may regain [your] sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
And [when] they heard [this], they began to glorify God. And they said to him, "You see, brother, how many ten thousands there are among the Jews who have believed, and they are all zealous adherents of the law.
came to me and stood by [me] [and] said to me, 'Brother Saul, regain [your] sight!' And [at that] same time I looked up at him [and saw him].
But why do you judge your brother? Or also, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.
Therefore, let us no longer pass judgment on one another, but rather decide this: not to place a cause for stumbling or a temptation before a brother.
For if because of food, your brother is grieved, you are no longer living according to love. Do not destroy by your food that person for whom Christ died.
[It is] good not to eat meat or to drink wine or [to do anything] by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is weakened.
Gaius, my host and [the host] of the whole church, greets you. Erastus the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus the brother.
Paul, called [to be] an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
But now I have written to you not to associate with any so-called brother, if he is a sexually immoral person or a greedy person or an idolater or an abusive person or a drunkard or a swindler--with such a person not even to eat.
But brother goes to court with brother, and this before unbelievers!
Now to the rest I say--not the Lord--if any brother has an unbelieving wife and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her.
For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the brother, since otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.
But if the unbeliever leaves, let him leave. The brother or the sister is not bound in such [cases]. But God has called us in peace.
For the one who is weak--the brother for whom Christ died--is destroyed by your knowledge.
Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat {forever}, in order that I may not cause my brother to sin.
Now concerning Apollos our brother, I urged him many [times] that he should come to you with the brothers, and he was not at all willing that he should come now, but he will come whenever he has [an] opportunity.
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God that is in Corinth, together with all the saints who are in all Achaia.
I did not experience rest in my spirit, [because] I did not find Titus my brother, but saying farewell to them, I departed for Macedonia.
And we have sent at the same time with him the brother whose praise in the gospel [has become known] throughout all the churches.
And we are sending with them our brother whom we have tested many times in many [things] that he is diligent, but now much more diligent [because of his] great confidence in you.
I urged Titus [to go], and I sent the brother [with him]. Titus did not take advantage of you, [did he]? Did we not conduct ourselves in the same spirit? Did we not walk in the same footsteps?
but I did not see [any] others of the apostles except James, the brother of the Lord.
Now, so that you also may know {my circumstances}, what I am doing, Tychicus, my dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all [things],
But I considered [it] necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, but your messenger and servant of my need,
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
Tychicus, my dear brother and faithful servant and fellow slave in the Lord, will make known to you all {my circumstances},
together with Onesimus, my faithful and dear brother, who is [one] of you. They will make known to you all {the circumstances} here.
and we sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ, in order to strengthen and to encourage you about your faith,
not to transgress and to exploit his brother in the matter, because the Lord [is] the one who avenges concerning all these [things], just as also we told you beforehand and testified solemnly.
But we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, [that] you keep away from every brother who lives irresponsibly and not according to the tradition that they received from us.
And do not consider [him] as an enemy, but admonish [him] as a brother.
Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon, our dear friend and fellow worker,
For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.
no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
Yes, brother, I ought to have some benefit of you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.
And they will not teach each one his fellow citizen and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
Know [that] our brother Timothy has been released, with whom I will see you, if he comes quickly [enough].
Now let the brother of humble circumstances boast in his high position,
If a brother or a sister is poorly clothed and lacking food for the day,
Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. The one who speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge [of the law].
Through Silvanus, the faithful brother (as I consider [him]), I have written to you {briefly} to encourage [you] and to attest that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.
And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom that was given to him,
The one who says [he] is in the light and hates his brother is in the darkness until now.
The one who loves his brother resides in the light, and [there] is no cause for stumbling in him.
But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
By this the children of God and the children of the devil are evident: everyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, namely, the one who does not love his brother.
not as Cain, who was of the evil one and violently murdered his brother. And {for what reason} did he violently murder him? Because his deeds were evil and the [deeds] of his brother [were] righteous.
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that every murderer does not have eternal life residing in him.
But whoever has the world's material possessions and observes his brother {in need} and shuts his heart against him, how does the love of God reside in him?
If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar, for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen is not able to love God whom he has not seen.
And this [is] the commandment we have from him: that the one who loves God should love his brother also.
If anyone should see his brother sinning a sin not [leading] to death, he should ask, and he will grant life to him, to those who sin not [leading] to death. ([There] is a sin [leading] to death; I do not say that he should ask about that.
Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to [those who are] called, loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ.
I, John, your brother and co-sharer in the affliction and kingdom and steadfastness in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony about Jesus.
