The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
And it happened that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
Then right after that the Holy Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert.
And after John {had been taken into custody}, Jesus went into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God
And while walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, Jesus saw Simon [i.e., Peter] and his brother Andrew casting their net in the lake, for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them, "{Follow} me and I will make you become fishers of people."
Jesus at once called them, and they left their father Zebediah in the boat with the crew, and went after him.
Then they went to Capernaum. When the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
saying, "{Leave us alone}, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!"
And the fame of Jesus spread at once in all directions, through the whole neighborhood of Galilee.
and 2:1], and on the [first] Sabbath day Jesus entered the synagogue and taught people.
where Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, who presently acquainted Jesus with it.
Jesus went up to her and, grasping her hand, raised her up; the fever left her, and she began to wait upon them.
When evening came and the sun had set, they brought to Jesus all those who were sick and those dominated by evil spirits.
Jesus cured many who were ill with various diseases, and drove out many demons, and would not permit them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.
And in the morning, very early, Jesus arose and went out into a solitary place, and there prayed.
He said to them, "Let us go on to the next towns so that I can preach there also, for this was why I came out [i.e., Jesus was sent by God to preach to other towns as well as Capernaum. See Luke 4:43]."
So, Jesus went into the [Jewish] synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching [the good news about the coming kingdom, verses 14-15] and driving out evil spirits.
Then a person with an infectious skin disease came to Jesus and, kneeling down before Him, begged Him, saying, "If you want to, you can heal me." [Note: Throughout this narrative the term "heal/healing" is originally "clean/cleansing" because the Jews viewed a person with such a disease as ceremonially "unclean." See Lev. 13:1-3].
But Jesus, moved with compassion, having stretched out his hand, touched him, and says to him, I will, be thou cleansed.
But Jesus at once drove him out of their presence, and gave him this stringent charge:
But he went out, and made it public, giving an account of it everywhere, so that Jesus was no longer able to go openly into a town, but was outside in the waste land; and they came to him from every part.
After Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, it became known that He was [back] at home [i.e., possibly at the house of Peter and Andrew, where He was staying. See 1:29].
Such a large crowd gathered that there wasn't room for them, even in front of the door. Jesus was speaking his message to them
And as they could not get him near to Jesus, on account of the crowd, they dug through the roof over the spot where He was standing and let the pallet down that the paralyzed man was lying on.
And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to him, Son, you have forgiveness for your sins.
And Jesus, having knowledge in his spirit of their thoughts, said to them, Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?
Then
And as Jesus passed by, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sit at the receipt of custom and said unto him, "Follow me." And he arose and followed him.
And it came about that he was seated at meat in his house, and a number of tax-farmers and sinners were at table with Jesus and his disciples: for there were a great number of them, and they came after him.
And the scribes and Pharisees seeing him eat with publicans and sinners, said to his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? And Jesus hearing it saith to them-
And Jesus, hearing it, said to them, Those who are well have no need of a medical man, but those who are ill: I have come not to get the upright but sinners.
Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. So they came to Jesus and said, "Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don't fast?"
And Jesus said to them, Will the friends of a newly-married man go without food while he is with them? as long as they have him with them they will not go without food.
Jesus was going through the grain fields on a Sabbath, and his disciples began to pick some heads of wheat as they made their way.
And the Pharisees asked Him, "Look, why are they [i.e., Jesus' disciples] doing what is against the law of Moses on the Sabbath day?"
"Have you never read," answered Jesus, "what David did when he was in want and hungry, he and his companions--
And Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath day was made for man's [benefit], and not man for the Sabbath [day's benefit].
Then Jesus entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand.
the Pharisees watched Jesus, to see if he would heal him on the sabbath-day, that so they might accuse him.
"Stand out in the middle," Jesus said to the man with the withered hand;
So Jesus looked around at them in anger, because He was pained over their stubbornness of mind, and said to the man, "Hold out your hand." And he held it out, and his hand was cured.
And the Pharisees immediately went out and conferred with the Herodians against Jesus, plotting how they could kill Him. [Note: These Herodians were members of a political party favoring King Herod]
And Jesus went away with his disciples to the sea, and a great number from Galilee came after him: and from Judaea,
So Jesus told his disciples to keep a small boat close by, for fear the crowd should crush him.
Now Jesus went up the mountain and called for those he wanted, and they came to him.
So he appointed the Twelve--Peter (which was the name that Jesus gave to Simon),
and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. Then Jesus went into a house.
Now Jesus went home, and a crowd gathered so that they were not able to eat.
And the experts in the law of Moses who had come down from Jerusalem were saying [Note: This followed the incident of Jesus healing a man with an evil spirit. See Matt. 12:22-28], "He has Beelzebub [in him]," and "He is driving out evil spirits by [the power of] the chief of evil spirits."
So Jesus called them to him, and answered them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan?
Jesus said all this because these experts in the law of Moses had been saying, "He has an evil spirit in him."
Then Jesus' mother and his brothers came. Standing outside, they sent word to him, to summon him.
There was a crowd sitting round Jesus, and some of them said to him: "Look, your mother and your brothers are outside, asking for you."
Jesus again began teaching along the shore of the lake [of Galilee]. A huge crowd gathered around Him so that He had to sit in a boat out in the lake [to speak to them], while all the crowd stood on the shore.
And Jesus said, "Whoever has ears to hear with ought to listen [to this] carefully."
And Jesus continued to speak to them, "Do you not know what this parable means? Then how can you understand any of the other parables?
And Jesus said to them: "Is a lamp brought to be put under the corn-measure or under the couch, instead of being put on the lampstand?
Take care what you listen to," said Jesus. "The measure you mete will be meted out to you, and more will be added for you.
And Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is like a farmer who scattered seed on the ground,
Jesus also said: "To what can we liken the Kingdom of God?
With many other parables like these, Jesus kept speaking his message to them according to their ability to understand.
On that day, when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go across to the other side of the lake."
whilst Jesus was at the stern, asleep on a pillow: upon which they awak'd him, crying out, master, have you so little concern to let us sink? then he rose,
Jesus rose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: "Hush! Be still!" Then the wind dropped, and a great calm followed.
Then Jesus and His disciples [finally] arrived on the other side of the lake [i.e., the east side] in the district of Geresa [Note: Matt. 8:28 says 'Gadara.' Geresa and Gadara were two towns
and as soon as Jesus was come out of the ship, he met a demoniack, who came from among the tombs, where he haunted,
And when he saw Jesus from far off, he went quickly to him and gave him worship;
And crying out with a loud voice he said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name, do not be cruel to me.
For Jesus had said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.
And Jesus said, What is your name? And he made answer, My name is Legion, because there are a great number of us.
and he was very importunate with Jesus not to drive them away from that country.
And the spirits begged Jesus: "Send us into the pigs, that we may take possession of them."
And Jesus immediately allowed them. And the unclean spirits going out entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep slope, into the sea (about two thousand), and were choked in the sea.
And they came to Jesus, and saw the man in whom had been the evil spirits seated, clothed and with full use of his senses, and they were full of fear.
Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their neighborhood.
as he was embarking, the late demoniack desired, that he might be with Jesus.
Howbeit, Jesus would not suffer him but said unto him, "Go home into thine own house and to thy friends, and show them what great things the Lord hath done unto thee, and how he had compassion on thee."
And he went on his way, and made public in the country of Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him: and all men were full of wonder.
And when Jesus had gone over again in the boat to the other side, a great number of people came to him: and he was by the sea.
And a man named Jairus, a leader of a synagogue, came up, and when he saw Jesus he flung himself at His feet
And Jesus went with him; and many people followed him, and thronged him.
When she had news of the things which Jesus did, went among the people coming after him, and put her hand on his robe.
And straight away Jesus was conscious that power had gone out of him; and, turning to the people, he said, Who was touching my robe?
But the woman became afraid and trembled with fear, for she knew what had happened to her [i.e., the healing], so she came and fell down in front of Jesus and told Him the whole truth.
While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue official's house and said [to the official], "Your daughter is dead; why are you bothering the Teacher any more?"
But Jesus, giving no attention to their words, said to the ruler of the Synagogue, Have no fear, only have faith.
Jesus allowed no one to go further with him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw mass confusion. People were crying and sobbing loudly.
Taking her hand, Jesus said to her: "Taleitha, koum!"--which means 'little girl, I am speaking to you--Rise!'
But Jesus strictly ordered them not to let anyone know about this. He also told them to give her something to eat.
Jesus leaving that place, went into his own country, attended by his disciples.
And Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour, but in his country, and among his relations, and in his family.
And he wondered at the want of faith shown by the people. Jesus went round the villages, one after another, teaching.
Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two. He gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
In the mean time king Herod heard of Jesus, whose name was now celebrated, and he said, John the Baptist is risen from the dead, no wonder then that he works miracles.
But when King Herod heard [about Jesus], he said, "John, whom I [had] decapitated, has risen."

So he went off and discussed with the high priests and the Temple police how he could betray Jesus to them. They were delighted, and agreed to give him money. Judas accepted their offer and began to look for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them when no crowd was present.

Then they prayed, "Lord, you know the hearts of all people. Show us which one of these two men you have chosen to serve in this office of apostle, from which Judas left to go to his own place."

Then he went back with them, returning to Nazareth and remaining in submission to them. His mother continued to treasure all these things in her heart.

Jesus asked him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then the other men surged forward, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him. Suddenly, one of the men with Jesus reached out his hand, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear. Jesus told him, "Put your sword back in its place! Everyone who uses a sword will be killed by a sword. Don't you think that I could call on my Father, and he would send me more than twelve legions of angels now? How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say this must happen?" At this point, Jesus asked the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a bandit? Day after day I sat teaching in the Temple, yet you didn't arrest me. But all of this has happened so that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted Jesus and ran away. Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled. Peter, however, followed him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard. He went inside and sat down with the servants to see how this would end. Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole Council were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death. But they couldn't find any, even though many false witnesses had come forward. At last two men came forward and stated, "This man said, "I can destroy the sanctuary of God and rebuild it in three days.'" At this, the high priest stood up and asked Jesus, "Don't you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?" But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest told him, "I command you by the living God to tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God!" Jesus told him, "You have said so. Nevertheless I tell you, from now on you will see "the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power' and "coming on the clouds of heaven.'" Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Listen! You yourselves have just heard the blasphemy! What is your verdict?" They replied, "He deserves to die!" Then they spit in his face and hit him. Some slapped him, saying, "Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you?" Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard when a servant girl came up to him and said, "You, too, were with Jesus the Galilean." But he denied it in front of them all. "I don't know what you're talking about!" he exclaimed. As he went out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, "This man was with Jesus from Nazareth." Again he denied it and swore with an oath, "I don't know the man!" After a little while, the people who were standing there came up and told Peter, "Obviously you're also one of them, because your accent gives you away." Then he began to curse violently. "I don't know the man!" he swore solemnly. Just then a rooster crowed. Peter remembered the words of Jesus when he said, "Before a rooster crows, you'll deny me three times." Then he went outside and cried bitterly.
Then the men took hold of Jesus and arrested him. But one of those standing there drew his sword and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear. Jesus asked them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a bandit? Day after day I was with you in the Temple teaching, yet you didn't arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted Jesus and ran away. A certain young man, who was wearing nothing but a linen sheet, was following Jesus. When the men grabbed him, he left the linen sheet behind and ran away naked. Then they took Jesus to the high priest. All the high priests, elders, and scribes had gathered together. Peter followed Jesus at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard. He was sitting with the servants and warming himself at the fire. Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole Council were looking for some testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death, but they couldn't find any. Although many people gave false testimony against him, their testimony didn't agree. Then some men stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, "We ourselves heard him say, "I will destroy this sanctuary made by human hands, and in three days I will build another one not made by human hands.'" But even on this point their testimony didn't agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Don't you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?" But he kept silent and didn't answer at all. The high priest asked him again, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?" Jesus said, "I AM, and "you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power' and "coming with the clouds of heaven.'" Then the high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we still need witnesses?" he asked. "You have heard his blasphemy! What is your verdict?" All of them condemned him as deserving death. Some of them began to spit on him. They blindfolded him and kept hitting him with their fists and telling him, "Prophesy!" Even the servants took him and slapped him around. While Peter was down in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant girls came by. When she saw Peter warming himself, she glared at him and said, "You, too, were with Jesus from Nazareth." But he denied it, saying, "I don't know or even understand what you're talking about!" Then he went out into the entryway. Just then a rooster crowed. The servant girl saw him and again told those who were standing around, "This man is one of them!" Again he denied it. After a little while, the people who were standing there began to say to Peter again, "Obviously you're one of them, because you are a Galilean!" Then he began to invoke a divine curse and to swear with an oath, "I don't know this man you're talking about!" Just then a rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered that Jesus told him, "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." Then he broke down and cried.
Then one of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus said, "No more of this!" So he touched the wounded man's ear and healed him. Then Jesus told the high priests, the Temple police, and the elders, who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit? While I was with you day after day in the Temple, you didn't lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, when darkness reigns!" Then they arrested him, led him away, and brought him to the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats, Peter, too, sat down among them. A servant girl saw him sitting by the fire, stared at him, and said, "This man was with him, too." But he denied it, "I don't know him, woman!" he responded. A little later, a man looked at him and said, "You are one of them, too." But Peter said, "Mister, I am not!" About an hour later, another man emphatically asserted, "This man was certainly with him, because he is a Galilean!" But Peter said, "Mister, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just then, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered the word from the Lord, and how he had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." So he went outside and cried bitterly. Then the men who were holding Jesus in custody began to make fun of him while they beat him. They blindfolded him and asked him over and over again, "Prophesy! Who is the one who hit you?" And they kept insulting him in many other ways. As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled and brought him before their Council. They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he told them, "If I tell you, you won't believe me, and if I ask you a question, you won't answer me. But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." Then they all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He answered them, "You said it I AM." "Why do we need any more testimony?" they asked. "We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth!"
When Jesus told them, "I AM," they backed away and fell to the ground. So he asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus from Nazareth." Jesus replied, "I told you that I am the one, so if you are looking for me, let these men go." This was to fulfill what he had said, "I did not lose a single one of those you gave me." Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Jesus told Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shouldn't I drink the cup that the Father has given me?" Then the soldiers, along with their commander and the Jewish officers, arrested Jesus and tied him up. First they brought him to Annas, because he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. Caiaphas was the person who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one man die for the people. Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since the other disciple was known to the high priest, he accompanied Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. Peter, however, stood outside the gate. So this other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter inside. The young woman at the gate asked Peter, "You aren't one of this man's disciples, too, are you?" "I am not," he replied. Meanwhile, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had built and were warming themselves because it was cold. Peter was also standing with them, keeping himself warm. Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his own teaching. Jesus answered him, "I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue or in the Temple, where all Jews meet together, and I have said nothing in secret. Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said. These are the people who know what I said." When he said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Jesus on the face and demanded, "Is that any way to answer the high priest?" Jesus answered him, "If I have said anything wrong, tell me what it was. But if I have told the truth, why do you hit me?" Then Annas sent him, with his hands tied, to Caiaphas the high priest. Meanwhile, Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Some people asked him, "You aren't one of his disciples, too, are you?" He denied it by saying, "I am not!" Then one of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "I saw you in the garden with Jesus, didn't I?" Peter again denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed. Then Jesus was led from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters early in the morning. The Jews did not go into the headquarters, to avoid becoming unclean and unable to eat the Passover meal. So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What accusation are you bringing against this man?" They answered him, "If he weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed him over to you." Pilate told them, "You take him and try him according to your Law." The Jewish leaders told him, "It is not legal for us to put anyone to death." This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die. So Pilate went back into the governor's headquarters, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "Are you asking this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about me?" Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? It is your own nation and high priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my servants would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But for now my kingdom is not from here." Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born for this, and I came into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is committed to the truth listens to my voice." Pilate asked him, "What is "truth'?" and then he went out to the Jewish leaders again and told them, "I find no basis for a charge against him. But you have a custom that I release one person for you at Passover. Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?" At this, they shouted out again, "Not this fellow, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.

When Jesus came to the tree, he looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down! I must stay at your house today." Zacchaeus came down quickly and was glad to welcome him into his home. But all the people who saw this began to complain: "Jesus is going to be the guest of a notorious sinner!" Later, Zacchaeus stood up and announced to the Lord, "Look! I'm giving half of my possessions to the destitute, and if I have accused anyone falsely, I'm repaying four times as much as I owe." Then Jesus told him, "Today salvation has come to this home, because this man is also a descendant of Abraham, and the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost."

How much more is a human being worth than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on Sabbath days." Then he told the man, "Hold out your hand." He held it out and it became normal, as healthy as his other hand.
But the synagogue leader, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, told the crowd, "There are six days when work is to be done. So come on those days to be healed, and not on the Sabbath day."
