For what I am writing to you is only what you can read and understand, and I hope that you will understand it fully,

as you have understood us partially [or "only a part of you have understood us"], that we are [the occasion of] your boasting, even as you are [the occasion of] our boasting.

And for this very reason I wrote you, that I might not come only to be grieved by those who ought to give me joy; and because I trusted in you all, that my joy is the joy of all of you.

The affliction I have had, comes only from a particular quarter, so that my resentment does not affect the whole church.

For if the operation of the law, giving death, recorded in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the eyes of the children of Israel had to be turned away from the face of Moses because of its glory, a glory which was only for a time:

if that which was only temporary was glorious, much more shall that which is permanent be glorious.

but their minds were closed. For to this day, at the reading of the old covenant, the same veil remains; it is not lifted, because it is set aside only in Christ.

but if our gospel be obscure, it is so only to those who are lost:

For it is not myself but Christ Jesus that I am proclaiming as Lord; I am only a slave of yours for Jesus' sake.

so that I suffer the influences of his death, while you only feel the effects of his life.

For our present trouble, which is only for a short time, is working out for us a much greater weight of glory;

So, we do not look at the things which can be seen, but at what cannot be seen, for the things which can be seen are [only] temporary, but the things which cannot be seen are never ending.

For I who am still in my tent sigh with anxiety, because I do not want to be stripped of it, but to put on the other over it, so that what is only mortal may be absorbed in life.

We are not commending ourselves to you again, but are giving you an occasion to be [rightfully] proud of us, so that you will have an answer for those who take pride in [outward] appearances [the virtues they pretend to have] rather than what is [actually] in heart.

But He who comforts the depressed--even God-- comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not by his coming only,

And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

For even if I grieved you with my letter, I do not regret it—even though I did regret it since I saw that the letter grieved you, yet only for a little while.

So though I sent you a letter, it was not only because of the man who did the wrong, or because of him to whom the wrong was done, but so that your true care for us might be made clear in the eyes of God.

They not only did this, as we had expected, but first of all in obedience to God's will they gave their own selves to the Lord and to us.

I do not mean this as a command. I only want to test the genuineness of your love by the devotion of others.

And I will give you my opinion in this matter; for this offering is fitting in your case, considering that you made a beginning before others, not only in the willingness to do something but also in actually doing something a year ago.

If only one is ready to give, according to his means, it is acceptable; he is not asked to give what he has not got.

my meaning is not, that you should be distress'd to relieve others, I only recommend an equality;

as it is written [Ex. 16:18], "The person who gathered much [i.e., manna] did not have any left over, and the one who gathered [only] a little [still] had plenty."

For he not only consented to my request, but being thoroughly in earnest, comes to you of his own accord.

with whom I have sent one of the brethren, who is not only distinguish'd among all the churches, by his preaching the gospel,

Not only so, however, but he hath also been appointed by the assemblies, as a fellow-traveler with us in this favour, which is being ministered by us with a view to the Lord's glory and our earnest desire: -

For I aim at being above reproach, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

But in the Writings it says, He who puts in only a small number of seeds, will get in the same; and he who puts them in from a full hand, will have produce in full measure from them.

Because the ministry of this contribution not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also overflows in many a thanksgiving to God.

I ask that when I do come I will not be driven to the boldness that I intend to show toward those few who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh [like men without the Spirit].

Do you look at things only as they appear in front of your face? If anyone trusts in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ's, so also we are Christ's.

for I dare not rank or compare my self with some who vaunt themselves: but they making their self-conceit the only standard whereby to judge of themselves, show their want of judgment.

I have a divine jealousy on your behalf; for I betrothed you to one only husband, even to Christ, that I might present you to him, a chaste virgin.

I have knowledge of a man in Christ, fourteen years back (if he was in the body, or out of the body, I am not able to say, but God only), who was taken up to the third heaven.

but tho' I don't know whether it was in the body, or out of the body, which God only knows,

On behalf of this man with such an experience I will boast, but on behalf of myself personally I will boast only about my weaknesses.

Though if I do choose to boast, I will not be such a fool, for I will only be telling the truth. But I will refrain from it, for I do not want anyone to be influenced by the wonderful character of these revelations to think more of me than is justified by my words or conduct.

but He said to me, "My spiritual strength is sufficient, for it is only by means of conscious weakness that perfect power is developed."

The signs of an apostle were performed with great endurance among you—not only signs but also wonders and miracles.

In what respect, then, were you inferior to the rest of the churches, except for the fact that I, and I only, never received from you any financial support? Please forgive me this wrong.

For I have no power against the truth, but only in defense of the truth.
