but now, said he, let him that hath a purse, and a bag, take them both; and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment to buy one.
Then he went out, and retired as usual to the mountain of olives, where his disciples followed him.
then an angel from heaven appear'd to him, and comforted him.
Before he had done speaking, the company appears, Judas one of the twelve marching in front, who advanc'd to Jesus to give him a kiss.
but Jesus said to him, Judas is it thus you betray the son of man, with a kiss?
they who were about him seeing what would happen, said to him, shall we smite with the sword?
but Jesus oppos'd, and said, forbear, stop there. and having touch'd his ear, he healed him.
then said Jesus to the chief priests, the officers of the temple, and the rulers, who were come to take him, are you come here with swords and staves as in pursuit of a robber?
Then they seized him and carried him away to the high priest's house, and Peter followed at a distance.
but one of the servants seeing him by the fire, star'd him in the face, and said, this man was with him too.
but he renounc'd Jesus, saying, woman, I don't know him.
a little while after another seeing him, said, you are even one of them. but Peter said to him, man, I am not.
about an hour after another confidently affirm'd, saying, this fellow was certainly with him; for he too is a Galilean.
whereupon the Lord turned about, and look'd upon Peter. then Peter remembred what the Lord had said to him, "before the cock-crowing you shall deny me thrice."
In the mean time, they who held Jesus, treated him with insults and buffoonry.
they made him blind-fold, they slapt him on the face, and cry'd out, divine who it was that smote thee.
and besides all this, they loaded him with the most impious invectives.
As soon as it was day, the rulers of the people, the chief priests and the Scribes being assembled, they order'd him to be brought before their council,
and said to him, if you are the Christ, say so. but he answer'd, if I should tell you so, you will not believe it.
then Pilate ask'd him, art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus answer'd him, 'tis as you say.
and finding that he belong'd to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was then likewise at Jerusalem.
When Herod saw Jesus he was extremely pleased; for he had long desired to see him, having heard much of him, and hoped to see him perform some miracle.
but Jesus made him no answer, tho' the chief priests and Scribes maintain'd their charge with vehemence.
then Herod and his retinue treated him with contempt, and in derision sent him back magnificently dress'd to Pilate.
you have represented this man to me as one that was stirring up the people to a revolt: you see I have examin'd him in your presence; yet I don't find he is guilty of the crimes you have laid to his charge: no, nor even Herod;
for I referr'd you to him, and you see nothing that is capital, has been made out against him.
I will therefore order him to be whipp'd, and then release him.
however he urg'd it a third time, why, what crime has he done? I don't find he has done any thing that deserves death: I will therefore order him to be whipp'd, and so dismiss him.
but they persisted with great clamour in their demands, to have him crucified: and as the people and chief priests redoubled their clamours,
accordingly he discharg'd the prisoner they desired, him that was committed for riot and murder; but he abandon'd Jesus to their discretion.
As they were conducting him to execution, they seiz'd upon one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming to town, and oblig'd him to carry the cross after Jesus,
who was followed by a great crowd of people, and several women, who beat their breasts and lamented him.
accordingly, when they came to the place call'd Calvary, they crucified him there, and the two malefactors; the one at his right, the other at his left.
while the people who stood looking on, and the senators themselves contemptuously said, he sav'd others; if he be Christ, the elect of God, let him save himself.
the soldiers too, who came to bring him vinegar, insulted him,
Now one of the malefactors, that was crucified with him, impiously said, if thou art the Christ, save thy self, and us.
but the other answered, and thus reprov'd him, art thou under no awe of God, thou that art condemned to the same punishment?
as for us, it is with justice, that we suffer the penalty due to our crimes: but as for him, what misdemeanour has he been guilty of?
As for his acquaintance, they all stood at a distance, with the women that followed him from Galilee, and were spectators during the whole transaction.
whereupon some of us went to the sepulchre, and found matters just as the women had related; but him they did not see.
but they press'd him, saying, stay with us, for it is late and begins to be dark. so he went in to tarry with them.
when looking upon him more intently, they perceiv'd that it was Jesus. but he vanish'd out of sight.
and they gave him a piece of broil'd fish, and of a honey-comb;
and they worship'd him, and with great joy return'd to Jerusalem,
all things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made.
the Life was produc'd in him, and the Life was the Light of men.
he was in the world, even the world that had been made by him, but the world knew him not.
but to as many as received him, and believed on him, he granted the privilege of being the sons of God.
it was of him that John bare witness, when he made this declaration, "this was he of whom I said, he that cometh after me, was before me; for he did indeed exist before me."

This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, who he was.
said they to him, who then art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us: what sayst thou of thy self?
Now the messengers were of the sect of the Pharisees, and they asked him,
The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "behold the lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world."
I knew him not: but therefore am I come baptizing with water, that he might be manifest to Israel.
and John testified, saying, I saw the spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
I had not known him: but he that sent me to baptize with water, had told me, "upon whom thou shalt see the spirit descending and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizeth with the holy spirit."
then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell?
come, said he, and see. so they went and saw where he lodged, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone.
The day following Jesus having a mind to go into Galilee, met with Philip, and said to him, follow me.
Philip meeting with Nathanael, said to him, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
but Nathanael said to him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? come and see, said Philip.
Jesus seeing Nathanael coming, said of him, there's a true Israelite, in whom is no guile. how do you know me?
said Nathanael to him. before Philip called you, replied Jesus, I saw you under the fig-tree.
Jesus answered him, because thou believest what I said, that I saw thee under the fig-tree, thou shalt see greater things than these.
and he said to him, I declare unto you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending, and descending upon the son of man.
now when the wine was out, the mother of Jesus said to him, they have no wine.
and said to him, 'tis usual to present the best wine first, and afterwards the worse, when the guests have drank pretty freely: but you have reserved the best wine to the last.
thus was the first miracle of Jesus wrought at Cana in Galilee, by which he displayed his power; and his disciples believed on him.
Now whilst he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the passover, many believed in him when they saw the miracles which he did.
who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him.
Jesus answered him, I declare unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered him, are you a doctor in Israel, and not know these things?
that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life.
for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life.
for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God.
who thereupon went to John, and said, master, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, he himself does now baptize likewise, and the people flock to him.
you yourselves can bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but was only sent before him:
the bridegroom is he that hath a right to the bride: as for the friend of the bridegroom, who is nigh his person and heareth him, he greatly rejoyces at the voice of the bridegroom: upon this account my joy is compleat.
for he whom God hath sent, saith nothing but what is divine: for God hath given him the spirit without restriction.
now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat him down by the well: it being about the sixth hour.
but the woman of Samaria said to him, how is it that you who are a Jew, ask drink of me, who am a Samaritan? (for the Jews have no friendly intercourse with the Samaritans.)
Jesus answered her, if you knew the dispensation of God, and who it is that says to you, give me to drink; you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water.
but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst: for the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a fountain springing up to everlasting life.
the woman said to him, sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
God is a spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.
then said the woman to him, I know that the Messias (that is to say the Christ) is to come, and when he is come, he will tell us all things.
In the mean while his disciples invited him, saying, pray master, eat.
upon which the disciples said one to another, hath any man brought him any thing to eat?
Jesus said to them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, for that testimony which the woman gave him, "he told me all that ever I did."
so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days.
and many more believed, for having heard him speak himself: and said to the woman,
now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ.
