'God' in the Bible

See, the Lord God comes with strength,and His power establishes His rule.His reward is with Him,and His gifts accompany Him.

Who will you compare God with?What likeness will you compare Him to?

God is enthroned above the circle of the earth;its inhabitants are like grasshoppers.He stretches out the heavens like thin clothand spreads them out like a tent to live in.

Jacob, why do you say,and Israel, why do you assert:“My way is hidden from the Lord,and my claim is ignored by my God”?

Do you not know?Have you not heard?Yahweh is the everlasting God,the Creator of the whole earth.He never grows faint or weary;there is no limit to His understanding.

Do not fear, for I am with you;do not be afraid, for I am your God.I will strengthen you; I will help you;I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.

For I, Yahweh your God,hold your right handand say to you: Do not fear,I will help you.

The poor and the needy seek water, but there is none;their tongues are parched with thirst.I, Yahweh, will answer them;I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

This is what God, Yahweh, says—who created the heavens and stretched them out,who spread out the earth and what comes from it,who gives breath to the people on itand life to those who walk on it—

For I Yahweh your God,the Holy One of Israel, and your Savior,give Egypt as a ransom for you,Cush and Seba in your place.

“You are My witnesses”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and My servant whom I have chosen,so that you may know and believe Meand understand that I am He.No god was formed before Me,and there will be none after Me.

I alone declared, saved, and proclaimed—and not some foreign god among you.So you are My witnesses”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and I am God.

This is what the Lord, the King of Israel and its Redeemer, the Lord of Hosts, says:I am the first and I am the last.There is no God but Me.

Do not be startled or afraid.Have I not told you and declared it long ago?You are my witnesses!Is there any God but Me?There is no other Rock; I do not know any.

Who makes a god or casts a metal imagefor no profit?

It serves as fuel for man.He takes some of it and warms himself;also he kindles a fire and bakes bread;he even makes it into a god and worships it;he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.

He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it.He bows down to it and worships;He prays to it, “Save me, for you are my god.”

I will give you the treasures of darknessand riches from secret places,so that you may know that I, Yahweh,the God of Israel call you by your name.

I am Yahweh, and there is no other;there is no God but Me.I will strengthen you,though you do not know Me,

This is what the Lord says:The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cushand the Sabeans, men of stature,will come over to youand will be yours;they will follow you,they will come over in chainsand bow down to you.They will confess to you:God is indeed with you, and there is no other;there is no other God.

Yes, You are a God who hides Himself,God of Israel, Savior.

For this is what the Lord says—God is the Creator of the heavens.He formed the earth and made it.He established it;He did not create it to be empty,but formed it to be inhabited—“I am Yahweh,and there is no other.

“Come, gather together,and draw near, you fugitives of the nations.Those who carry their wooden idols,and pray to a god who cannot save,have no knowledge.

Speak up and present your case—yes, let them take counsel together.Who predicted this long ago?Who announced it from ancient times?Was it not I, Yahweh?There is no other God but Me,a righteous God and Savior;there is no one except Me.

Turn to Me and be saved,all the ends of the earth.For I am God,and there is no other.

Those who pour out their bags of goldand weigh out silver on scales—they hire a goldsmith and he makes it into a god.Then they kneel and bow down to it.

Remember what happened long ago,for I am God, and there is no other;I am God, and no one is like Me.

“Listen to this, house of Jacob—those who are called by the name Israeland have descended from Judah,who swear by the name of Yahwehand declare the God of Israel,but not in truth or righteousness.

For they are named after the Holy City,and lean on the God of Israel;His name is Yahweh of Hosts.

Approach Me and listen to this.From the beginning I have not spoken in secret;from the time anything existed, I was there.”And now the Lord Godhas sent me and His Spirit.

This is what the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says:I am Yahweh your God,who teaches you for your benefit,who leads you in the way you should go.

But I myself said: I have labored in vain,I have spent my strength for nothing and futility;yet my vindication is with the Lord,and my reward is with my God.

And now, says the Lord,who formed me from the womb to be His Servant,to bring Jacob back to Himso that Israel might be gathered to Him;for I am honored in the sight of the Lord,and my God is my strength—

This is what the Lord God says:Look, I will lift up My hand to the nations,and raise My banner to the peoples.They will bring your sons in their arms,and your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.

The Lord God has given Methe tongue of those who are instructedto know how to sustain the weary with a word.He awakens Me each morning;He awakens My ear to listen like those being instructed.

The Lord God has opened My ear,and I was not rebellious;I did not turn back.

The Lord God will help Me;therefore I have not been humiliated;therefore I have set My face like flint,and I know I will not be put to shame.

In truth, the Lord God will help Me;who will condemn Me?Indeed, all of them will wear out like a garment;a moth will devour them.

Who among you fears the Lord,listening to the voice of His Servant?Who among you walks in darkness,and has no light?Let him trust in the name of Yahweh;let him lean on his God.

For I am Yahweh your Godwho stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—His name is Yahweh of Hosts.

Your children have fainted;they lie at the head of every streetlike an antelope in a net.They are full of the Lord’s fury,the rebuke of your God.

This is what your Lord says—Yahweh, even your God,who defends His people—“Look, I have removedthe cup of staggering from your hand;that goblet, the cup of My fury.You will never drink it again.

For this is what the Lord God says:“At first My people went down to Egypt to live there,then Assyria oppressed them without cause.

How beautiful on the mountainsare the feet of the herald,who proclaims peace,who brings news of good things,who proclaims salvation,who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

The Lord has displayed His holy armin the sight of all the nations;all the ends of the earth will seethe salvation of our God.

For you will not leave in a hurry,and you will not have to take flight;because the Lord is going before you,and the God of Israel is your rear guard.

Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses,and He carried our pains;but we in turn regarded Him stricken,struck down by God, and afflicted.

Indeed, your husband is your Maker—His name is Yahweh of Hosts—and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;He is called the God of all the earth.

For the Lord has called you,like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit,a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,”says your God.

so you will summon a nation you do not know,and nations who do not know you will run to you.For the Lord your God,even the Holy One of Israel,has glorified you.”

Let the wicked one abandon his wayand the sinful one his thoughts;let him return to the Lord,so He may have compassion on him,and to our God, for He will freely forgive.

This is the declaration of the Lord God,who gathers the dispersed of Israel:“I will gather to them still othersbesides those already gathered.”

There is no peace for the wicked,”says my God.

They seek Me day after dayand delight to know My ways,like a nation that does what is rightand does not abandon the justice of their God.They ask Me for righteous judgments;they delight in the nearness of God.”

But your iniquities have built barriersbetween you and your God,and your sins have made Him hide His face from youso that He does not listen.

transgression and deception against the Lord,turning away from following our God,speaking oppression and revolt,conceiving and uttering lying words from the heart.

Yes, the islands will wait for Mewith the ships of Tarshish in the lead,to bring your children from far away,their silver and gold with them,for the honor of the Lord your God,the Holy One of Israel,who has glorified you.

The sun will no longer be your light by day,and the brightness of the moon will not shine on you;but the Lord will be your everlasting light,and your God will be your splendor.

The Spirit of the Lord God is on Me,because the Lord has anointed Meto bring good news to the poor.He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,to proclaim liberty to the captivesand freedom to the prisoners;

But you will be called the Lord’s priests;they will speak of you as ministers of our God;you will eat the wealth of the nations,and you will boast in their riches.

I greatly rejoice in the Lord,I exult in my God;for He has clothed me with the garments of salvationand wrapped me in a robe of righteousness,as a groom wears a turbanand as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

For as the earth produces its growth,and as a garden enables what is sown to spring up,so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praiseto spring up before all the nations.

You will be a glorious crown in the Lord’s hand,and a royal diadem in the palm of your God.

For as a young man marries a young woman,so your sons will marry you;and as a groom rejoices over his bride,so your God will rejoice over you.

From ancient times no one has heard,no one has listened,no eye has seen any God except You,who acts on behalf of the one who waits for Him.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:My servants will eat,but you will be hungry;My servants will drink,but you will be thirsty;My servants will rejoice,but you will be put to shame.

You will leave your name behindas a curse for My chosen ones,and the Lord God will kill you;but He will give His servants another name.

Whoever is blessed in the landwill be blessed by the God of truth,and whoever swears in the landwill swear by the God of truth.For the former troubles will be forgottenand hidden from My sight.

“Will I bring a baby to the point of birthand not deliver it?”says the Lord;“or will I who deliver, close the womb?”says your God.

But I protested, “Oh no, Lord, God! Look, I don’t know how to speak since I am only a youth.”

Have you not brought this on yourselfby abandoning the Lord your Godwhile He was leading you along the way?

Your own evil will discipline you;your own apostasies will reprimand you.Think it over and see how evil and bitter it isfor you to abandon the Lord your Godand to have no fear of Me.This is the declarationof the Lord God of Hosts.

Even if you wash with lyeand use a great amount of soap,the stain of your sin is still in front of Me.This is the Lord God’s declaration.

Only acknowledge your guilt—you have rebelled against the Lord your God.You have scattered your favors to strangersunder every green treeand have not obeyed My voice.This is the Lord’s declaration.

A sound is heard on the barren heights,the children of Israel weeping and begging for mercy,for they have perverted their way;they have forgotten the Lord their God.

Return, you faithless children.I will heal your unfaithfulness.“Here we are, coming to You,for You are the Lord our God.

Surely, falsehood comes from the hills,commotion from the mountains,but the salvation of Israelis only in the Lord our God.

Let us lie down in our shame;let our disgrace cover us.We have sinned against the Lord our God,both we and our fathers,from the time of our youth even to this day.We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

I said, “Oh no, Lord God, You have certainly deceived this people and Jerusalem, by announcing, ‘You will have peace,’ while a sword is at our throats.”

Then I thought:They are just the poor;they have played the fool.For they don’t understand the way of the Lord,the justice of their God.

I will go to the powerfuland speak to them.Surely they know the way of the Lord,the justice of their God.However, these also had broken the yokeand torn off the chains.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God of Hosts says:Because you have spoken this word,I am going to make My wordsbecome fire in your mouth.These people are the wood,and the fire will consume them.

When people ask, ‘For what offense has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ You will respond to them: Just as you abandoned Me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

They have not said to themselves,‘Let’s fear the Lord our God,who gives the rain, both early and late, in its season,who guarantees to us the fixed weeks of the harvest.’

“This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Correct your ways and your deeds, and I will allow you to live in this place.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: “Look, My anger—My burning wrath—is about to be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the tree of the field, and on the produce of the land. My wrath will burn and not be quenched.”

This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices, and eat the meat yourselves,

However, I did give them this command: Obey Me, and then I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must follow every way I command you so that it may go well with you.

You must therefore declare to them: This is the nation that would not listen to the voice of the Lord their God and would not accept discipline. Truth has perished—it has disappeared from their mouths.

Why are we just sitting here?Gather together; let us enter the fortified citiesand perish there,for the Lord our God has destroyed us.He has given us poisoned water to drink,because we have sinned against the Lord.

Therefore, this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to feed this people wormwood and give them poisonous water to drink.

But Yahweh is the true God;He is the living God and eternal King.The earth quakes at His wrath,and the nations cannot endure His rage.

You must tell them: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let a curse be on the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,

which I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace.’ I declared: ‘Obey Me, and do everything that I command you, and you will be My people, and I will be your God,’

“Say this to them: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Every jar should be filled with wine. Then they will respond to you, ‘Don’t we know that every jar should be filled with wine?’

Give glory to the Lord your Godbefore He brings darkness,before your feet stumbleon the mountains at dusk.You wait for light,but He brings darkest gloomand makes thick darkness.

And I replied, “Oh no, Lord God! The prophets are telling them, ‘You won’t see sword or suffer famine. I will certainly give you true peace in this place.’”

Can any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?Or can the skies alone give showers?Are You not the Lord our God?We therefore put our hope in You,for You have done all these things.

Your words were found, and I ate them.Your words became a delight to meand the joy of my heart,for I am called by Your name,Yahweh God of Hosts.

For this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am about to eliminate from this place, before your very eyes and in your time, the sound of joy and gladness, the voice of the groom and the bride.
