'Time' in the Bible
There was in the time of Herod, the king of Judaea, a priest of the name of Zechariah, belonging to the class of Abijah. He had a wife who was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
And they were without children, because Elisabeth had never given birth, and they were at that time very old.
And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
Now listen! You will become silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
And the people were waiting for Zacharias and were surprised because he was in the Temple for such a long time.
When his time of service was over, he went to his home.
After some time his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and for five months she kept herself in seclusion. She said,
"This is what the Lord has done for me at the time when he has been gracious to me, to take away my disgrace among people."
Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah,
“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave;For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.
Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
As He has spoken from all time by the lips of His holy Prophets--
And the child grew and became strong in character, and lived in the Desert till the time came for him to appear publicly to Israel.
Just at this time an edict was issued by Caesar Augustus for the registration of the whole Empire.
While they were there, the time came for her to give birth.
And when, after eight days, the time came for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given to him before his birth.
When the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,
And coming up at that time, she gave praise to God, talking of him to all those who were waiting for the freeing of Jerusalem.
And when He was twelve years old they went up as was customary at the time of the Feast, and,
in the time of the high priest Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
And Jesus at this time was about thirty years old, being the son (as it seemed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,
where he was being tempted by the Devil for 40 days. During that time he ate nothing at all, and when they were over he became hungry.
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
After the Devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time.
I'm telling you the truth there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when it didn't rain for three years and six months and there was a severe famine everywhere in the land.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
And so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were working with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Have no fear; from this time forward you will be a fisher of men.
But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and at that time they will fast."
One time Jesus was walking through some grain fields on a Sabbath. His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for your reward in heaven is great [absolutely inexhaustible]; for their fathers used to treat the prophets in the same way.
So Jesus went with them. Now by this time he was not far away from the house, [and] the centurion sent friends, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come in under my roof.
And it came about, after a little time, that he went to a town named Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great number of people.
At that time Jesus healed many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and He granted sight to many blind people.
Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
Some time afterward he went on through towns and villages, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him,
They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
That which fell among the thorns means those who have heard, but as they go on their way, the Message is stifled by the anxieties, wealth and gaieties of time, and they yield nothing in perfection.
And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
For already He had been commanding the foul spirit to come out of the man. For many a time it had seized and held him, and they had repeatedly put him in chains and fetters and kept guard over him, but he used to break the chains to pieces, and, impelled by the demon, to escape into the Desert.
Now a man named Jairus, a synagogue official, came [to Him]; and he fell at Jesus’ feet and began begging Him to come to his house;
After the voice had spoken, Jesus was alone. The disciples kept silent and at that time told no one about what they had seen.
And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
because at that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you are to say."
And which of you by worrying can add one hour to his life’s span?
But be sure of this: if the homeowner had known at what time the thief were coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into.
So be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at a time when you don't expect him."
The Lord said: “Who then is the faithful and sensible manager his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food at the proper time?
But if that servant says to himself, "My master is taking a long time to come back,' and begins to beat the other servants and to eat, drink, and get drunk,
The lord of that servant will come at a time when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not ready for him, and he will have him cut in two and will give him his part in the fate of those who have no faith;
For from this time, a family of five in one house will be on opposite sides, three against two and two against three.
Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
At that time, some people came and reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
So he said to the worker who tended the vineyard, 'For three years now, I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and each time I inspect it I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue to deplete the soil?'
from the time the master of the house may have risen up, and may have shut the door, and ye may begin without to stand, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, lord, open to us, and he answering shall say to you, I have not known you whence ye are,
At that time some Pharisees came and told Him, “Go, get out of here! Herod wants to kill You!”
Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
No long time afterwards the younger son got all together and travelled to a distant country, where he wasted his money in debauchery and excess.
And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
And another time he said to the disciples, There was a certain man of great wealth who had a servant; and it was said to him that this servant was wasting his goods.
The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
And in time the poor man came to his end, and angels took him to Abraham's breast. And the man of wealth came to his end, and was put in the earth.
Then Jesus told the disciples, "The time will come during which you will long to see one of these days when the Son of Man is with you, but you will not see it.
Because just as lightning flashes and shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his time.
"Just as it was in Noah's time, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man.
The same was true in the time of Lot: they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building;
Jesus told his disciples a parable about their need to pray all the time and never give up.
and he would not for a time, but after these things he said in himself, Even if God I do not fear, and man do not regard,
And he said, All these things I have done from the time when I was a boy.
Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
saying, Go into the village over against you, in which ye will find, on entering it, a colt tied up, on which no child of man ever sat at any time: loose it and lead it here.
Now [as] he was drawing near by this time to the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began rejoicing to praise God with a loud voice for all the miracles that they had seen,
"O that at this time thou hadst known--yes even thou--what makes peace possible! But now it is hid from thine eyes.
For a time [of siege] is coming when your enemies will put up a barricade [with pointed stakes] against you, and surround you [with armies] and hem you in on every side,
And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
At the right time he sent a servant to the farmers in order to get his share of the produce of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him back empty-handed.
From that time, however, no one ventured to challenge Him with a single question.
"As for these things that you see, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another that won't be knocked down."
And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.
This will be a time for you to serve as witnesses.
Therefore make up your minds not to prepare your defense ahead of time,
"Alas for the women who at that time are with child or who have infants; for there will be great distress in the land, and anger towards this People.
When they put out [foliage], now you see for yourselves [and] know that by this time the summer is near.
I assure you and most solemnly say to you, this generation [those living at that definite period of time preceding the second coming] will not pass away until everything takes place.
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man."
His habit at this time was to teach in the Temple by day, but to go out and spend the night on the Mount called the Oliveyard.
And when the time had come, he took his seat, and the Apostles with him.
for I tell you that from this time I will never drink the produce of the vine till the Kingdom of God has come."
And after a short time another seeing him said, And thou art of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not.
But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see Him because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by Him.
So he continued to question him for a long time, but Jesus gave him no answer at all.
